Growing grass, milking cows, and building better herds

For Canterbury dairy farmers Matt and Zara Hood, progress comes from “just chipping away.”

Over the past 20+ years, the family farm near Ashburton has steadily evolved into a productive, well-balanced dairy operation, now milking 700 cows across 200 hectares, with pivot irrigation covering almost every paddock.

Originally a sheep and beef block, the property was purchased by Matt’s father in 1999 and converted to dairy in 2010. Since then, it has continued to develop, with Matt and Zara now leasing the property and owning the cows. “We’ve added another pivot every couple of years and grown the herd from 500 to 700 cows,” Matt says. “Irrigation has made all the difference – we’d be under restrictions by now if we hadn’t invested early.”

The Hoods, who have three young boys, run a predominantly crossbred herd. “Full Friesians are just too big for what we want here,” Matt explains. “Crossbreds suit the system — nice cows that handle the conditions and perform well.”

The couple, led by Zara, make breeding decisions together, working closely with CRV consultant Nelle. They’re focused on improving fertility and tightening calving while maintaining strong production and animal health.

“We’re always looking for that balance – good production, low costs, and cows that don’t need a lot of extra attention,” Matt says.

Last season the couple purchased a line of CRV-bred cows from a retiring farmer in the North Island — and they’ve been impressed by what was a progeny test herd. “They milked really well, nice natured, well-formed, and easy to manage. They calved a bit earlier [due to being from the North], but their production was through the roof.”

While the Hoods have been CRV clients for around six years, bringing those PT cows into the herd reinforced their confidence in the genetics. Working closely with their CRV sales consultant, they’ve continued to refine their breeding approach.

“Our rep understands what we’re trying to achieve, including tighter calving, and keeping things simple,” Matt says. “Now

At the end of the day, Matt says the goal is simple: “Grow grass, milk cows, and make a bit of money. Keep the staff happy and have a good work-life balance. That’s success for us.”

Farming, family, and building a better herd

Wairarapa farmer Fraser Smith runs a busy three-property operation with his brothers, Campbell and David, just outside Carterton.

The business includes a 300-hectare dairy platform milking 750 cows, a runoff for young stock, wintering and supplement feed, and a recently purchased block used for finishing lambs. With both autumn and spring calving, the farm runs at full pace year-round.

Herd improvement plays a key role in keeping the system running smoothly. Fraser works closely with CRV consultant Vanessa Hull-Brewerton to ensure the breeding decisions fit the needs of all parts of the operation.

“We’ve got a unique setup,” Fraser explains. “We don’t just want heifer replacements or beef calves – we need genetics that work across the whole business. Vanessa understands what we’re trying to achieve and helps us choose the right bulls for our system.”

Their focus includes moderate-sized cows, strong udders and traits that support both calving periods. Consistency and practicality guide their decisions.

Away from the farm, Fraser volunteers with Fire and Emergency New Zealand. “It’s good to be able to help out in the community,” he says. “You get a lot back from it.”

Balancing farming, family, and community commitments can be challenging, but having the right support makes a

difference. “Working with CRV saves time,” Fraser says. “It means I can get on with the rest of the jobs and still spend time with the kids.”

For Fraser, the aim is clear: run an efficient farm, look after the people involved, and keep improving the herd year after year.

Helen and Peter McLaren, Murchison.

CHANGUS

CHANGUS 23900 & FERTABULL CHANGUS

Changus 23900 and Fertabull Changus are on offer this season.

The strength of the Changus breed lies in its unique combination of traits: the Angus’ calving ease, shorteer gestation, and superior marbling, paired with the Charolais’ exceptional growth and carcass yields. Kakahu Changus brings together Kakahu’s top Angus and Charolais genetics, enhanced by the added benefit of being homozygous polled.

This year’s Changus bulls are sired by Kakahu Milestone, a proven Charolais bull excelling in the Beef + Lamb NZ Progeny Test. Milestone ranks in the top 5% for calving ease and the top 1% for 400-day weight and gestation length, according to the Charolais BREEDPLAN (December 2024).

Kakahu has a strong history in dairy genetics and has spent several years refining this new breed. Feedback from a select group of dairy farmers has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting Changus bulls as an excellent choice for easier calving, strong calf performance for rearers, and well-grown cattle for finishers.

HIGHLIGHTS

Rissington Cattle Company, based in the Hawkes Bay, have established their Charolais line through a joint venture with Leachman Cattle, with a focus on polled, easy calving and early maturing animals.

trait averages displayed are the average of the three bulls in the straw.

Changus calves exhibit solid coat colours ranging from dark grey to cream. While less uniform than purebred Charolais, their distinct colouring makes them easy to identify, even among crossbred herds.

Your extra set of eyes on the farm

Dairy farming moves fast. With more to manage and fewer hands on deck, keeping track of it all isn’t easy.

myHERD is our easy-to-use herd management app that helps you stay ahead of the day-to-day. Whether you’re out in the paddock or in the shed, myHERD lets you enter events on your phone, access your herd records anywhere, and make faster, clearer decisions with confidence – all in one place.

“Everything I want to look at is in my hand. If I can do it, anyone can.”

One cow, or the whole herd

Need to zoom out?

myHERD lets you run whole-herd reports to: identify cows to dry off first develop more informed plans to manage your herd.

Here are some of the questions we often get asked. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, give us a call, our friendly team is always ready to help.

Q: How easy is it switch to myHERD?

Real decisions, backed by real data

A: Our myHERD consultants can guide you through a simple process to get you started. The key thing is to ensure your herd records are up to date before making the shift.

For Te Awamutu dairy farmers Matt and Katie Taylor, myHERD has become a key tool at dry-off and beyond. Each cow has her own profile, showing everything that’s happened across the season, from herd test results and somatic cell count to body condition, calving date and health treatments.

Q: What systems do you connect with?

“When it comes to drying off, we can bring up myHerd, look at a cow individually, and anything that’s happened to her this season is on her own little profile page,” says Matt.

Events like instances of mastitis are logged as they happen, making it easier to see patterns, track outcomes and make informed culling or carry-over decisions.

A: There is an integration with the DTS Herdman system, and we are working with other shed automation and collar companies to connect myHERD to their systems. Check on myherd.co.nz to see the current integrations available.

“When it comes to managing that for the next season, if we’ve got excess cows and we need to make some culling decisions, we can look at who’s had mastitis – how many times, what the cell count over the whole season is, whether it has come down.”

See Page 137 for pricing

A: During a period where you are not entering new data as there is a hold on records updating while your herd data is being moved across to myHERD. This takes around 5 days when records are up to date.

Adding value with myDNA

Farm details

Jeff White –sharemilker, Ōtamarākau

Switching to a Once-A-Day system has driven Jeff White to do a deeper-dive into the genetics of his herd and put greater emphasis on having accurate data.

CRV’s myDNA has been a vital tool in helping Jeff identify his future

replacements earlier and ultimately lift the value of his herd.

Jeff DNA tested his herd last year, which has helped him make better breeding decisions, and made calving easier when it comes to matching dams with calves.

“We have been DNA testing our calves for three years and made the step to DNA test the entire herd last season,” he says.

“We are always vigilant about matching mothers and calves, but when we got busy it was great to know we had the back up of DNA testing to accurately identify the calves we wanted to rear for replacements. It made calving easier.”

Using myDNA has added significant value to Jeff’s herd, which is especially important for him as a sharemilker.

For Jeff, the benefits of myDNA are clear:

Better genetics, faster. Being able to easily identify his future replacements earlier has helped him lift the genetics of his herd more quickly.

Stress-free calving. Knowing he could match dams with calves using DNA to prevent mismothering took the pressure off during calving.

Farm details

Johnny Higgins –dairy farmer, Cambridge

Success in farming often lies in the details, and for Johnny Higgins, CRV’s herd testing service delivers the precise insights needed to improve herd performance and health.

Johnny tests three times a year, gaining regular, accurate data that has become a cornerstone of his management strategy. From improving genetics to enhancing milk quality, CRV’s herd testing helps Johnny achieve tangible results.

“Herd testing with CRV is so easy,” Johnny shares. “We’ve got experienced people like Shay [herd

tester] who come in and take care of the testing for us. It doesn’t even feel like it’s much more work than a normal milking—you just cruise through it.”

“Our main reason for herd testing is to improve genetics and milk quality,” Johnny explains. “Lowering our cell count and breeding better cows are the big drivers for us, and herd testing plays a key role in helping us achieve that.”

For Johnny, the benefits are clear:

Lower SCC: Maintain high milk quality and reduce mastitis risk.

Better breeding: Identify and breed top-performing cows for long-term herd improvement.

Let CRV take the hassle out of Herd Testing.

Let CRV take the hassle out of Herd Testing. You can expect:

a CRV technician at every herd test cost savings with just a 30ml sample required recording of real-time results for precise data.

Boost profitability – identify top-performing cows, cull low producers, and optimise milk yield.

Enhance genetics – use precise data to pinpoint your best producers so you can make informed breeding decisions.

Improve milk quality – detect mastitis early (via SCC) and optimise fat and protein levels.

SireMatch

Get the most out of your herd with breeding support tool, SireMatch.

SireMatch is a report, tailored to your herd and farming situation by CRV’s experienced sales consultants. It helps to prevent inbreeding and genetic defects using your cow’s pedigree information. It can also indicate the three best bulls to use per cow, based on your preferences.

SireMatch analyses the breed make-up of your herd and can sort the breed information of your cows into separate groups. As a result, you can mate specific bulls to specific breeds of cows in your herd, for example:

Your group of Friesian cows to Jersey bulls

Your group of Jersey cows to Friesian bulls

Your group of Crossbred cows to both Jersey, Friesian and Crossbred bulls

AB you can rely on

That’s why CRV’s AB service is built around well-trained people, consistent standards, and strong on-farm support, so you can trust the job is done right.

CRV-trained and certified AB technicians inseminate nearly 500,000 cows across New Zealand each year. Every CRV-approved technician is supported by experienced supervisors and assessed annually on semen handling, thawing, and insemination technique to ensure high, consistent standards are maintained.

It means confidence on farm, knowing the person inseminating your cows understands your system, respects your animals, and treats your genetics like they matter.

Skilled technicians

Apprentice technician Bridget McIvor joined CRV two years ago and

continues to develop her skills through hands-on training and ongoing support.

“CRV’s training is thorough, hands-on, and ongoing. There’s always someone ready to help, answer questions, or share their knowledge. The support network, from management to fellow technicians, is one of the strongest I’ve experienced,” Bridget says.

That experience is backed by longserving technicians like Gemma Hogg, who has been with CRV for seven years. Gemma began as a DIY AB operator on her own herd before training as a CRV technician.

“CRV has been there for me every step of my technician career. From offering me the opportunity to train as a tech in the first place, to always being just a phone call away if I’ve needed support on farm, whether that’s from my sales rep or my supervisor,” she says.

CRV technicians don’t just inseminate cows, they also help protect the value of your data. Matings are recorded directly into your herd recording

Breeding Indicators: breed with confidence

“By using Estrotects we’ve been able to reduce our mating period from 13 weeks down to nine weeks, and then we’ve also gone from five weeks of AB to four weeks.”

Estrotect Breeding Indicators reveal the intensity of estrus as determined by mounting activity, so you don’t just know when your cows are in heat – you know how likely they are to get pregnant and maintain pregnancy.
