Some of us that play with cars have what some call an issue with keeping stuff. I don’t mean used cereal boxes, good stuff like old carburetors and every bolt you ever took off of something that didn’t make its way back on again. We also like cheap or free stuff. For example, I was at a swap meet at the Syracuse Nationals and I spotted an old hood with “free” written on it and my first thought was not whether I needed it, it was how do I get it home in the car I had. Quick thought, the car has a roof rack so deal done. My friend looked at me like I had 2 heads when I told him it’s a hood for a 67-69 Barracuda which I do not have. Some just don’t understand. I suffered getting it to the car and then again the whole ride home with it on the roofwind noise, checking the straps constantly and no satellite radio due to antenna interference. At a rest stop I checked my Blackberry to see what the hood inserts look like because they were missing and low and behold I had a set on a shelf at home somewhere. Not sure where or why I acquired them but I have them. Serendipity? Stupidity? Hoarding gone right for once? You be the judge. Mark Woy’s “Angry A”
It’s fitting I met Mark Woy at the Goodguys Columbus car show July 11, 2025. Not only is he a Good Guy but his ‘30 Model A won Goodguy’s Hotrod of the Year in 2017, their national award, not just in Columbus. I had the privilege of getting some great pictures of his car on a perfect summer day at the show.
The car was built by Bobby Hilton at Hilton Hotrods in Plains Virginia and Mark purchased it this year from the original owners family. Since he got it he has driven the wheels off of it going to Goodguys Columbus, the Syracuse Nationals and the Deadmans Curve Show in New Jersey.
The Angry A is a 1930 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan that has been chopped 3-½ inches and covered in a beautiful 60’s panel paint job done by Buckey’s LTD autobody in Martinsburg, WV.
The shiny stuff up front is a Chrysler 354 Hemi with a 471 blower built by Ross Racing Engines in Niles, OH. A Vertex magneto and dual 94 carburetors keep it running and a World Class Tremec 5 speed and polished Winters quick change rear get the power to the ground. All this coolness sits on Deuce rails with a polished drilled dropped axle for the perfect attitude with skinny chrome smoothie wheels and bias ply tires for the correct look.

ROCK ‘N’ RACE 2025
When we arrived at Dragway 42 on Saturday July 12, 2025 there had already been an evening and one full day of events. Rock ‘n’ Race - The Woodstock of Nostalgia Drag Racing is a huge event and if you have never been it is like no other event I have witnessed. Gassers, Funny cars and vintage race cars racing all day with show cars making fun passes as well. Thursday evening there are group pictures and a cackle fest and racing starts early Friday and goes all weekend. There is a swap meet, Show and Shine and vendors all 3 days with awards for the show cars picked by the Slick Devils Car Club. That’s the Race, the Rock part is bands Thursday, all day Friday and Saturday. Eleven bands in all rocked the weekend on the stage just off the beginning of the staging lanes. With the wheel stand and burnout competitions and the new motorcycle class this event has something for everyone. I was blown away by how many race trailers there were and the quality of the vintage cars they were racing. These racers didn’t just throw these track missiles together to look good, they can run too! Show quality cars that go really, really fast including a few with wheels up launches, lots of tire smoke and plenty of noise. I love it when they do a great burnout, blast past the tree and then have a really long backup. Not enough BUGS (Back up girls) in my opinion but this ain’t the 60’s I guess.
There was some bad weather Saturday afternoon which stopped everything for a while but it all kept going when the weather cleared. After the storm, racing continued, Kiss the Sky (a Jimmy Hendrick tribute band) rocked the evening, a municipality size fireworks show including an unbelievable fireball at the end and the Thunder Buggy jet powered amish buggy finished out the night.

Jeff Lutz made several passes as well as Jeffery Lutz before they both broke their transmissions. Jeff’s 57 Chevy race car lined up against a stock 57 Chevy, another faster 57 and a gasser for some good fun. Larry Dixon also wowed the crowd with 2 passes in his Top Fuel 2 seater.
With over 400 participants and 5000+ spectators this show is growing every year. I will definitely be back with my schedule cleared to spend the whole weekend next year, I suggest you do the same!

HOPE OVER HEROIN CAR SHOW
Wednesday June 25th was a hot one and so were the cars and trucks that showed up to the Hope over Heroin car show at the Calvary Chapel on Brookpark Rd in Cleveland, Ohio. The church’s large parking lot was full of great cars and trucks of all makes and years. The shady side of the lot had the smartest (or the earliest) hotrodders and the free food and drink tables with many volunteers cooking and helping out. There was a real family vibe at this show which made it more special. There was live music with inspirational stories in between and it kept the crowd engaged and upbeat. There were many quality hotrods in attendance including last month’s cover car, a couple John Shapiro Allstars participant cars from past and future Piston Power Autorama Show in March and our own Craig’s Dodge Demon which won an award. Congrats Craig!
This was the first show for Calvary Church and I hope they have another one.

OCTANE NIGHTS
The 11th Annual Octane Nights On Main Street Cruise In was held on August 6, 2025 in Ravenna, Ohio. This event was started by the late Gary Krause who passed away in 2020 and his wife Tricia, daughter Carlee and the staff at Mongoose Motorsports/ Portage Trim have continued this fantastic event. It has grown way beyond expectation to be one of the biggest one day car shows in the country - and it’s on a Wednesday! The city closes down ½ mile of St Rt 59 starting at St Rt 14 going West and cars fill the entire street AND all parking lots along that stretch. Estimated at over 6000 cars and 18,000 spectators, that’s as many cars as Goodguys Columbus gets in an entire weekend. I have never attended this show and what I experienced was beyond expectation of size and attendance. I was also impressed by how smoothly the seeming chaos of thousands of cars looking to park was controlled. The staff at this event is mostly volunteers and they did an outstanding job.
A DJ played oldies through speakers that lined the entire street and Ride4Life performed motorcycle stunt shows throughout the day. The best part of the night was the “Rumble Ravenna” at 7pm. Almost every car at the event was started and revved up in honor of Gary Krause. Hotrods are usually loud so imagine 4000+ cars throttling up at the same time, you can’t, you have to hear it to believe it.

The road closes at 2pm but cars get there early, sometimes the night before to get a spot so plan ahead if you want to bring your car next year, trust me it is worth it. Free admission and no fee for cars makes this a true rarity. In the past, Cruisin’ Times Magazine has named this the #1 Best Downtown Event and if we still did that it would get it again. I hope you can attend next year, rain or shine, Cruisin’ Times will be there.

Kevin’s 1970 Camaro
Kevin got this Camaro in 2022 from his father Tom who bought it in 1987. The stock 307 was replaced with a blueprint 383 stroker motor with a Muncie 4 Speed and a new 10 bolt rear end. Everything has been gone through from brakes , cooling system, steering and electrical. His kids, Weston and Elsie have participated in the experience, learning and educating as a family. He hopes to have the car painted soon, I hope he keeps the perfect color green.
Paul’s 1969 Chevelle
The 1969 Chevelle was originally purchased Marion Chevrolet, a SS 396 car L78, delivered with a bench seat and an AM radio, no power steering and 3.42 gears. It changed hands a couple of times and Steve Bica got the car and won a couple of track championships. After the 1981 season he put the car away in storage. In 1990 Paul purchased the car and installed a GM performance 454 4 bolt main block with an original 396 forged crank. dart iron eagle heads, 10.5 to 1, Centerforce clutch, blow proof bell housing with the original M22. He still takes one of the previous owners for rides in this street monster.
