Here’s a question I hear all the time “What happened to swap meets?” asking in a negative tone. I respond positively that I go to a lot of shows and they are doing just fine…hear me out. Swap meets, despite the common negative chatter, really do have a lot going for them. If you know, then you know, a swap meet is just a gearhead thing, if you play with cars, you just love going to them. A crisp early morning walk around a junk filled fairground, who is not going to enjoy that? There’s a charm to the nostalgia vibe of the carnival type atmosphere not to mention there’s always a treasure to be found if you’re patient enough to dig through the rusty gold.
Swap meets as a whole are still thriving, some have just been impacted by local changes, like manufacturing plants or race tracks closing. That can be a big blow to any event, and I think a lot of people don’t realize the ripple effect that has. It’s not just about the swap meet itself, but about the whole community and economy surrounding it. Weather can be a major factor, too, it’s a gamble every time, especially with outdoor events.
The passion for car culture and finding those parts at a discount isn’t going anywhere. People still need parts for their cars, and a lot of them would rather hunt for it in person at a swap meet than go the traditional retail route. There’s something special about that, whether it’s the thrill of the hunt or just the satisfaction of scoring a good deal. The fact that many of these shows have been around since the ‘80s speaks volumes about their staying power.
The audience might be aging a bit, but as long as there are vendors with shiny parts that you can’t live without and the guys just clearing out the garage, swap meets will continue to have life. Embrace the idea that change doesn’t always have to be bad— new owners, new energy, new ideas... that can be exactly what an event needs to keep it thriving. Mmm, I know a magazine that sounds like that.

Ryan purchased the Road Runner in high school when he found it sitting on a car lot in Calcutta Ohio. The car was originally equipped with a 440 and four speed and Ryan rebuilt the engine and tinkered with it through high school. Ryan jokes about the first time that he put slicks on the car that he broke the rear end on a hard launch. After high school, Ryan started his own business and the car sat for a while but he always wanted to do something more with it. That’s where Wes Adkins comes in.
Wild Wes Paintworks & Hot Rod Factory was established in 1994 and Wes was already an accomplished painter and pinstriper, starting commissioned paint work when he was only 14. Like a lot of us, his dad helped him on his journey to the car addiction by teaching him to paint and work on cars. Obviously, a natural gearhead he also worked hard for a degree at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, and over the next few decades Wes took his skills and creativity to the way next level. With some TV experience, SEMA show builds, magazine work with photography and writing, Wes has made an incredible reputation for himself for high end, superior quality paint and full builds. Did I mention that he can also draw his own renderings and finished the inside of his shop to professional designer standards? This guy does it all, with excellent quality and creativity.

The “Angry Bird” has a 1500 HP 394 CU IN Hemi stroker engine with twin Nelson Racing turbos, forged internals, ported heads and a BE-COOL radiator keeps it happy. A Holley Dominator ECU handles the fuel while a Rossler built 4L80E transmission, Neal Chance converter and a transbrake gets it going (you gotta have a transbrake for the street, right?).
A custom fabbed 9” rear housing with Moser 3.89 Tru trac differential and 35 spline axels won’t break this time when he hard launches with that transbrake. Coil over shocks hold up the 4 link and big Willwood disk brakes make the Angry Bird stop on a coyote. Magnum Force tubular K-member and tubular control arms hold up the front with a full roll cage and subframe connectors keep it from twisting into pretzel with all that HP.

The body mods are really what makes this Road Runner stand out. It is a compliment when you can’t tell what has been changed because it just makes it look like it is supposed to be that way, and this car has a lot of that. Flush mounted glass front, sides and rear, shaved handles, locks, marker lights, mirrors and cowl vents along with a smooth firewall make this slick and clean to the eye. The narrowed and tucked bumpers should have come that way from the factory and the custom grille and hand formed lower valence, chin spoiler and rear roll pan with tucked license plate really do not look fabricated, they just feel factory. The fabricated engine bay cover panel and the fabricated side exit exhaust are the only things that the factory wouldn’t do. The finishing details are custom LED sequential taillights fabricated from Easy Performance components and Harley Davidson headlights with turn signals inside, right next to dual cone air filters where the high beams should be. The CCW wheels 18x8 front and 18x12 rear with Mickey Thompson tires try their best to stay stuck to the pavement but 1500hp makes it impossible. The Orion Automotive Finishes paint is Angry Olive Green Pearl custom mixed and sprayed by Wes Adkins along with custom airbrushing and graphics also by Wes.
The interior was done by Sean O’Neil at Spotlight Customs featuring a custom headliner, hand stitched roll bar covers that also hide the cage at the A pillars, full custom dash and door panels, scratch made Holley screen pod, one-off Eureka leather seats and a custom subwoofer enclosure/amp rack that takes up the whole back seat.
Wild Wes and his wife Stephanie Adkins own and operate the small business with Stephanie’s mother Barb doing the bookkeeping and billing. Wes would like to thank Stephanie, Barb and his hard-working intern Colin for all they do to make this small but high end shop the success that it is.
Wes focuses on custom paint, flames, stripes, graphics & design, airbrushing, hand painted lettering & pinstriping for autos, cycles, trucks, motorsports and more. He is also known for very custom high-end builds and custom fabrication.

2025 PISTON POWERED AUTO-RAMA
The 2025 Piston Powered Auto-Rama kicked off for participants and vendors on Wednesday at 8 a.m. It takes two full days for all the cars and vendors to get set up, and we were no exception. Our last car rolled in at 6 p.m. on Thursday, and with that, we were finally ready for the show.
The John Shapiro Cruisin’ Times All Stars featured 22 cars and trucks, hand-picked by Craig Harrison, a long-time contributor to Cruisin’ Times and the leader of our “Road Crew.” Twenty-two may not sound like a lot, but getting that many high-quality show cars together in March is no small job. None of these vehicles had ever been in the All Star Showcase before, with over 20 years of this tradition, that’s saying something.
The Piston Powered Auto-Rama started out as the Cleveland Auto-Rama and was held downtown in the Cleveland Convention Center. When it moved to the I-X Center, the larger space allowed it to grow into what it is today. This year’s attendance was over 57,000 people which is up almost 5% from last years show, that is fantastic!
The show included a model car contest and a building area for young cruisers. The Krazy Paint Charity Panel Jam returned again this year, raising and donating almost $50,000 to the Career and Technical School Foundation in 2024. Hopefully, they can top that this year.
Also drawing a crowd was the Ohio Motorpool and Military Vehicle Preservation Association. They brought out a tank, big trucks, a spotlight, military Jeeps, a DUKW amphibious truck, and other historic gear. The Western Reserve Chapter of the Antique Outboard Motor Club had a whole row of motors on stands and a couple of old-school speed boats. The Historical Construction Equipment Association brought in a big dump truck, some semi tractors, a vintage fire engine, and an early fifth-wheel truck and trailer setup.

Cars of all kinds were on display, from every era. The Slick Devils had their “Hot Rod Asylum” in the ballroom packed with traditional hot rods, while the Northern Ohio Car Club Association had their “Mopar Madness” display downstairs. The Rock ‘n Roll Capital Street Machines Club won an Outstanding Club Display award and showed off some beautiful rides, including the original “Hot Rod Lincoln” from the song made famous by Commander Cody. Fun fact, Cody’s version says V8, but the original song had a V12 Lincoln motor and “an overdrive that just won’t stall.”
Additional clubs in attendance were The Northeastern Ohio Camaro Club and the North Coast Mustang and Ford Club which both had displays packed with some sweet rides. Outstanding Club Display winners also included Motorheads Car Club of Cleveland, The Model A Club and Northshore Racing. The Best Club Display award went to the Corvette Cleveland Club, showing off—you guessed it— some sharp Corvettes.
Individual awards were also handed out. Dan Patrone took home the Car Parts Warehouse Gold Cup for his 1963 Chevrolet Corvette, which also landed in the Great 8. Other top International Car Show Association (ICSA) awards included:

The Spring 2025 Miller’s Swap Meet and Car Show took place on March 8th at the Ross County Fairgrounds near Chillicothe, Ohio. The morning kicked off cold and rainy, but that didn’t stop vendors from setting up early or the show cars from rolling in as the day progressed.
The event officially starts at 7 a.m., and the early birds were out in full force, eager to score deals. Most attendees headed straight into the three buildings packed with indoor vendors to escape the chill, while the more seasoned hunters were already outside with flashlights in hand, digging through the good stuff before the sun came out. Some vendors stayed tucked inside their trailers until the weather warmed up, but by mid-morning, the place was buzzing.
Overall, it was a solid turnout, and the car show only got better as the skies cleared and the sun came out. By afternoon, the place was full and there were lots of folks walking around and talking cars.
Best in Show to 87 and newer was Cadillac Mac with his Mustang and 87 and older was Charlie Seymour with his early Nova. Well-deserved wins and both truly beautiful rides. Boy those are some big trophies!
Their next event is scheduled for November 1st, 2025. Cruisin’ Times will be there again, hunting for bargains and checking out the classics.
