top #4 on the Lucky 7 tour was Arby’s in Salem, Ohio. Their moto is “IF IT HAS WHEELS, BRING IT!”. Its a Food Bank Benefit and a car cruise all rolled into one from 4pm-9pm but we saw people rolling in to get the good spots hours before it started! It was a hot one in mid july, but we saw at least a couple hundred show up to the cruise. Last year they raised over 800,000 lbs of food for area food banks! They’re cruisin every Saturday night from 5:00pm to 9:00 pm starting May 2017 through October 2017. his ‘71 Javelin AMX, has been on my bucket list since before I had a bucket list, not even sure I have one now. Owning a Javelin has been a dream for at least 10 years, as I owned one of these cars back in 1971 and loved it. I am sure we all have “our car” maybe not our first car, but the car from our past with all the memories of the good times of our youth. For me it was my Javelin. The love of beautiful cars, the lines and the paint jumped out as art. I went to Timken Vocational High School in Canton, Ohio and I decided to take the Autobody training class. I was able to paint my very first car in that class when I was 16. It was a 1961 Plymouth Valiant. How many 26 Cruisin’ Times ~ January 2017
of you remember that one? I ended up getting a job in a body shop working on and painting Ramblers. I still remember having my bosses brothers ‘69 Javelin in our shop. It had this unbelievable paint job, just crazy colors. After that I was mostly about painting and especially liked custom paint. I had joined the Army and finishing up Air Traffic Control School in Fort Rucker Alabama with no car. My dad agreed to co-sign for me so he sent me to the Volkswagen dealership. I see a red one that seems OK so I head home to talk it over with him. Hold everything! What is that on the show room floor? As I am heading home I saw a 1971 Javelin on www.cruisintimesmagazine.com

the floor. I sat in it and was blown away. It was silver metallic with blue interior and split blue vinyl top that made it look like it had T-tops. It was a 304 with an automatic, a/c and p/s. Well, bye bye VW. Hello Javelin. After some convincing my dad. I drove it back down to Alabama for the remaining time of my service. I still owned my Javelin when I got out of the service in ‘73. I came back to Ohio and started some college classes and ended up meeting my future wife. I would walk her to her car after class and we would stand by our cars and chat, me leaning up against my Javelin. We got married and had a three week www.cruisintimesmagazine.com
adventure of a honey moon in that car. I had the Javelin for a few years more and moved on as most of us do. Between the time I sold my Javelin and the time I acquired the one I have today, I had about 50 other cars. Even though I still own my ‘68 Mustang after 35 years, I have always loved my Javelin. As the internet became more loaded with vehicles I started seeing really nice Javelins. I found some show quality ones but I was not ready to spend that type of money. I found some beaters, but it had been over 35 years since I had worked on a car. I was in my early January 2017 ~ Cruisin’ Times 27
60’s and was afraid I would not get it done and be able to enjoy it, so I kept looking. One aspect on the hunt was that if I was going to get my dream car back, I wanted the performance model. The big boy version is a Javelin AMX that came with a 360 or a 401, with an automatic or a Hurst 4 speed. After a while I finally found a clean 1971 AMX four speed with a 401 from California. Only problem, the auction is ending in 10 minutes. With no time to research I go for it and win. I was worried it was a scam so long story short, I backed out of the deal. Back to the hunt. I find another from New York and the price was about a third of the last one. It was exactly the same color. It was a Hurst four speed with a 360. It was good enough to me so I bid, I got it and it was delivered. Now the real fun began. The Javelin had good bones, interior had been upgraded but mostly original. Body was solid and it ran good. I was so glad to get one at the price and the style I wanted. I started to look for a restore shop and eventually tracked down a shop that got my interest. Pete’s classic coach works, in Newburgh, Ohio. Talking with Pete I discovered that 95% of his work was Porsche. The other 5% were special interest for him. He was intrigued with an AMX. He had a spot and was able to get it in that fall. It was tough finding Javelin parts. A few websites had minimal parts selections but lots of what I wanted was unavailable. Every now and then I would score a part and would drop off parts to Pete. Picking a color, I believe, is everyone’s crowning glory. I went through about 10 different colors before I settled. When I got the car it was butterscotch. A very 71 ish American Motors color, AMC ran ad’s with this color. In the end I decided a good color of original was better. As with everyone, the project keeps growing. I go to see the progress and they ask, do you want to rebuild the engine while its out? “Well, while its out, sure!”. I finally picked up the Javelin I had wanted for over 10 years and had not driven one since 1975. I have been overwhelmed with the enjoyment of finally owning and getting to drive this car. I am new to cruise-ins and car shows, but this summer has been a blast, the folks that enjoy these cars are the greatest in the world. I must share, that I have always felt being an AMC guy, I knew I was a little off center in the car world and I get ripped a lot from my friends, but to have this car appreciated outside of the AMC family was exciting. My wife and I now try to make a cruise or car show a date night. We are meeting a lot of great car owners and getting to talk cars as well as music and other blasts from the past. 28 Cruisin’ Times ~ January 2017
A little about these cars: There were only 2054 71 Javelin AMX made. Sold new for $3,432. The 360 engine was designed and built by American Motors and has 285 hp. Javelin AMX was driven by Mark Donahue and won the Trans Am series in 1971 ,1972 and 1976 www.cruisintimesmagazine.com

1963 VW Bug Buddy Estes Akron, Ohio This is my 1963 VW Bug. It has been lowered with an air ride suspension, LA Products adjustable front beam and 2.5” dropped spindles. Riding on Dayton “100 true spoke” rims. All handles, locks, wipers & sprayers were removed. The rails were modified and all seams ,fenders, custom head lights & taillights have been molded in for that ultimate smooth & shaved look. The suicide doors were done by Ron Shaffer. The all chrome engine was modified by Jim’s Custom VW to handle the added horsepower of an NOS nitrous oxide system & turbocharger.
