Our 11- or -12-day Svalbard in Spring: Sea Ice, Pristine Snow and Wildlife is a rare opportunity to visit the Norwegian High Arctic when Svalbard is bathed in 24 hours of daylight, yet the landscape remains entrenched in its snow-clad Arctic splendor. Entire mountains are still cloaked in snow and expansive sea ice, including fast ice. You have the unique privilege of witnessing the Arctic “waking up.” Birds arrive, filling the silence with their calls. Meltwater begins to trickle, ice cracks and pops, and the ground starts to thaw. Tiny shoots may appear through the melting snow—a quiet yet grand rebirth unfolding, echoing life’s cycle on an Arctic scale.

The journey ends in medieval Porvoo, Finland’s second-oldest city – a storybook contrast to Helsinki’s modern design.

A land of waterfalls, fire, ice and steam—Iceland delivers geological drama at every turn. Over three extraordinary days, experience one of the most dynamic landscapes on Earth. Begin at the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, then discover Reykjavik’s design culture, art and Norse heritage. Visit Hveragerði, where steam rises from the earth. Then come the waterfalls, from Seljalandsfoss, where a path passes behind the falls, to the 60-metre plunge of Skógafoss and the thundering cascade of Gullfoss, alongside Reynisfjara’s black volcanic beach and the Golden Circle’s erupting geysers.

A guided, one-time paddle enables you to enjoy your polar surroundings from a unique and intimate perspective. Exclusive Heli-Landing You’ll be transported in small groups on Ultramarine’s two twin-engine helicopters to landing sites only accessible by air. Expect stunning aerial views from your seat in the helicopter—and yet more incredible polar vistas once you land: glaciers, icebergs, remote landscapes, wildlife and more. *Select departures on Ultramarine. Helicopters do not operate in Svalbard.

68

CLUB A Legacy of Loyalty at Sea

Loyalty Program

THE

The Voyage That Defined Loyalty In late 1914, Ernest Shackleton and 27 men embarked on the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, setting sail from South Georgia Island aboard Endurance, bound for the last great uncharted frontier—the Antarctic continent. Their goal: to complete the first overland crossing of Antarctica. What followed became one of history’s most extraordinary tales of leadership, resilience and human connection.

Endurance never reached her destination. Trapped and crushed by pack ice in the Weddell Sea, the ship sank in November 1915, leaving the crew stranded on the frozen surface of the ocean for months. What Shackleton did next defied all odds. With five men, he sailed an open 22-foot lifeboat called the James Caird across 800 miles of the world’s most violent ocean to reach a remote whaling station on South Georgia Island— a journey that took 17 days. He then organized a rescue and sailed back for every man left behind, finally reaching them in August 1916, nearly two years after the expedition first set sail. Not one life was lost. His secret wasn’t just survival instinct. It was the fierce loyalty he inspired and the unshakable bond forged between men who had endured the extraordinary together.

Solo Travelers

Traveling Solo with Quark Expeditions. No Single Supplement. No Compromise. Through our Request-Share program, solo guests are paired with a same-gender cabin mate, meaning neither pays the single supplement. A small logistical detail that often becomes the beginning of a lasting friendship. Ships Built for Human Connection Our small vessels are designed with generous communal spaces—lounges, bars, a library, presentation theaters, and open deck viewing areas. You don’t have to work at meeting people. The layout practically does it for you. A Dining Room With No Strangers There’s no assigned seating we can lose. Tables for two, four, eight, and larger groups fill our dining rooms, and solo travelers are always welcomed to pull up a chair. Some of the best conversations of the voyage happen over dinner.

199 Guests. Everyone Knows Your Name. With a maximum of 199 guests aboard, you’re on a firstname basis with fellow travelers and crew within hours. Our expedition guides and expert presenters are just as approachable—always eager to go deep on polar science, wildlife, or the history of the ice. The Ice Brings People Together

The Solo-Traveler Advantage There’s a particular kind of freedom that comes with solo travel— no compromises, no negotiated itineraries, just you and the ice. But what surprises most solo travelers on a Quark Expedition is how quickly the solitude gives way to something far richer.

It’s nearly impossible to witness a humpback breach or a glacier calve without turning instinctively to the person beside you. That shared moment of awe is its own kind of introduction. Polar passion, it turns out, is one of the most powerful connectors there is.

There’s more to explore. At the opposite end of the world lies another wilderness waiting to be explored: the Antarctic. This polar region, accessible from the tip of South America, entails a crossing of the iconic Drake Passage (by ship or by plane). Once there, you’ll discover penguin rookeries, iceberg-filled bays, glaciers and rugged coasts that are home to vast populations of wildlife. Visits to the 7th Continent enable polar history enthusiasts to fulfill a lifetime dream of following in the footsteps of early explorers like Sir Ernest Shackleton. Add in the remote islands of South Georgia, the Falkland Islands and Snow Hill, along with Patagonia, and you’re in for an expedition of a lifetime.
