Our 2022.23 Season
We can’t wait to see our old friends and welcome new faces at Streetcar Crowsnest this year! This season is full to bursting with funny, beautiful, poignant, bracing, theatrical offerings. The 2022.23 season includes fresh takes on classic works from Homer, Chekhov, Shakespeare, Ovid, and Handel. Acclaimed international dramatists Lolita Chakrabarti, Rajiv Joseph, and Lloyd Suh will have their Toronto premieres alongside world premieres by Canadian playwrights Alex Bulmer and Paolo Santalucia. The works of CanLit heroes Al Purdy and André Alexis are transformed into unmissable theatrical events. Three signature music theatre experiences are peppered throughout the year as well as an everchanging roster of musicians taking centre stage at Crowsnest Corner in our lobby post-show. We want to give Torontonians every reason to have an unforgettable night out. After the past two years, you deserve it. With 12 shows in our two venues, our fabulous restaurant Gare de l’Est offering the best preshow prix fixe menu in town, and our bar (open pre- and post-show) featuring music, comedy, and cabaret, Crow’s Theatre has never been more hopping. Our two theatres are transformed by every new show— something we take pride in at Crow’s Theatre. With each production, you will be transported to a new world: a country estate in Ukraine at the end of the 1890s, the surreal streets of Iraq after the fall of Baghdad, opening night at Covent Garden Theatre in London 1833, and the back alleys of Toronto from a dog’s-eye view, to name a few. “It’s a black comedy, a grisly horror show, and a metaphysical ghost story.” The Hollywood Reporter Crow’s Theatre and Modern Times Stage Company present the Toronto premiere of BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO, written by Rajiv Joseph and directed by Modern Times Artistic Director Rouvan Silogix. Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony Award nominated, BENGAL TIGER AT THE BAGHDAD ZOO is set amid the chaos of the 2003 American occupation of Iraq. In this darkly comic tale, the lives of two American marines intersect with an Iraqi gardener as they search through the rubble of war for friendship, redemption, and a toilet seat made of gold. Playwright Rajiv Joseph is a two-time Obie Award winner for Best American New Play, a writer for the Netflix series Nurse Jackie, and co-screenwriter of the film Draft Day, directed by Ivan Reitman. Director Rouvan Silogix is a Pakistani-Tanzanian immigrant and award-winning theatre creator. He is the founder and Artistic Director of Theatre ARTaud and was Crow’s Theatre Associate Artistic Director before being appointed Artistic Director of Modern Times.

Ira Aldridge, a young, Black American actor has been asked to take over the role, but a Black man has never played Othello on the English stage before. His groundbreaking performance upends centuries of British stage tradition and changes the lives of everyone involved. As anti-abolition riots take over the streets of London, how will the cast, critics, and audience react to the revolution taking place in the theatre? An imagined version of true events, Lolita Chakrabarti’s multi-awardwinning play raises the curtain on a fascinating figure in theatre history and provides a microcosm of our current struggle for progressive change, both on and off the stage. Never the same two years in a row, ELECTRIC MESSIAH introduces new voices and interpretations—this year, it’s the world premiere of a new interpolation by composer Lieke van der Voort. Soundstreams is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, with an exciting mix of new music by Canadian and international composers that encompasses a wide range of genres from chamber and vocal/choral music to contemporary opera. That is the question the gods Hermes and Apollo ponder over a beer at the Wheatsheaf Tavern in Toronto. They make a bet, grant 15 dogs human consciousness, and watch from above as the pups discover the poetry and the pitfalls of complex thought and emotion. In this modern-day fable of fate, faith, love, and language, the pack must reckon with morality and mortality and the profound relationships they share with humans. Fifteen Dogs, the beloved, global bestseller by Toronto writer André Alexis, won the Scotiabank Giller Prize, the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, and Canada Reads. Adapter and director Marie Farsi directed the wildly successful Ghost Quartet in 2019 for Crow’s Theatre, where she was Associate Artistic Director for two seasons.

Because I’ve been waiting a long time for this.” Edmund in Prodigal, Paolo Santalucia PRODIGAL, a world premiere, follows the return home of Edmund Clark, the gay, alcoholic, eldest son of a prominent Toronto family, after he is cut off from the family trust. On the way home, Edmund meets Levi, a man with whom he impulsively engages in a passionate encounter before realizing Levi is also en route to Edmund’s family home. The reason: Levi is the brother of the Clark family’s estate manager. Why are the Clarks able to support a stranger in their home while turning their back on their eldest son? PRODIGAL, from the critically acclaimed The Howland Company (Casimir and Caroline, The Wolves, Punk Rock), examines themes of queerness, privilege, marginalization, and forgiveness, as these two young men attempt to return to the families they have lost—one to confront his past and the other to start his future. Paolo Santalucia (Orphans for the Czar, Crow’s Theatre) is an awardwinning theatre artist and one of the founding artistic leaders of The Howland Company, for which he adapted and directed Casimir and Caroline and will direct Three Sisters.

“It is a beautiful thing to look at something long enough to really understand it. But it is so much more beautiful to be looked at long enough to be understood.” The Chinese Lady, Lloyd Suh Afong Moy is 14 years old when she is brought to the United States from Guangzhou Province in 1834. Purportedly the first Chinese woman to set foot on U.S. soil, she has been put on display for the American public as “The Chinese Lady.” As the decades wear on, her celebrated sideshow comes to define and challenge her very sense of identity. Alternatingly dark, poetic, and whimsical, the play is a searing portrait of Western culture seen through the eyes of a young Chinese woman. Playwright Lloyd Suh’s previous works include Charles Francis Chan Jr.’s Exotic Oriental Murder Mystery, American Hwangap, The Wong Kids in the Secret of the Space Chupacabra Go!, and Jesus in India. He was a 2020 recipient of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship. Director Marjorie Chan is an award-winning interdisciplinary artist, Artistic Director of Theatre Passe Muraille, and a Governor General’s Literary Award in Drama nominee for China Doll, her playwriting debut.

“I see better with my feet.” Perceptual Archaeology, Alex Bulmer quoting James Holman In 1996, Blind theatre artist Alex Bulmer had a life-changing encounter with a swimming pool. It sparked a new ambition to become a travel writer and to venture across Europe and North America. PERCEPTUAL ARCHAEOLOGY reveals unexpected relationships with time, geography, and meaning. It asks us to question how we perceive and understand the spaces around us and recounts a story that is playful, unpredictable, and revelatory. PERCEPTUAL ARCHAEOLOGY is accessible for Blind and sighted audiences. Alex Bulmer and Leah Cherniak are established leaders in disability arts and physical theatre, respectively, and have previously collaborated on several projects, including the 2021 short film Postcards from My Balcony. Recently, Alex curated CoMotion Festival at Harbourfront Centre, a multidisciplinary celebration of new ideas and expressions by Deaf and disabled artists.

“The piece is very powerful and shows an evolution of Guillaume Côté’s style as a choreographer.” Chroniques de danse Principal Dancer and Choreographic Associate at The National Ballet of Canada, Guillaume Côté, with his newly formed dance collective Côté Danse, explores the myth of Odysseus in his work X (DIX). Conceived during the pandemic when travellers were beckoned home, X (DIX) is about adventuring into the unknown, trusting your inner compass, and finding your way home, whether it be a state of mind or a physical place. Hailed as “one of the finest male dancers in the world” by The London Times, Guillaume Côté is respected internationally for his outstanding musicality, technique, and dramatic interpretation. He has danced most of the major classical roles with The National Ballet of Canada and has had several lead roles created on him. In 2013, he was appointed Choreographic Associate at the The National Ballet of Canada and, since 2014, has been Artistic Director of the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur in Québec.

Previews $45 Tuesday and Wednesday evenings $60 Wednesday matinees $50 Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings $65 Saturday and Sunday matinees $60 Each ticket is subject to a service charge of $2.50 plus HST. Group, student, senior, arts worker, pay-what-you-can, and under-30 ticket prices available. Please inquire with the box office. • A limited number of reserved premium seats are available at most performances for an additional $15. • Please visit our website to read our ticket and theatre policies.
SHOW TIMES AND SEATING • Performances in the Guloien Theatre begin at 1:30 pm and 7:30 pm. • Performances in the Studio Theatre begin at 2 pm and 8 pm. • Seating at both theatres is general admission, unless otherwise stated or reserved premium seating is purchased.

HOW TO GET TO STREETCAR CROWSNEST • Take the 72A or 72B Pape bus from Pape subway station or the 72B bus from Union Station and exit at Dundas Street. • Take the Gerrard Street streetcar or the Queen Street streetcar and exit at Carlaw Avenue. • There is a Bike Share Toronto station on Carlaw Avenue in front of the theatre as well as bike posts for parking on Dundas Street and Carlaw Avenue. • There is street parking on Carlaw Avenue and under Streetcar Crowsnest.
