There’s something quietly revealing about a tenth anniversary.

At ten years, our new theatre is no longer new. The paint has dried, the novelty has worn off, and the building now creaks in the places where it always will – which, it turns out, is exactly what you want from a theatre. All of a sudden, it’s just...home.

When we opened Streetcar Crowsnest in 2017, we weren’t just opening a building. We were trying to build a new audience of theatre lovers in Toronto’s east end.

For a while, it wasn’t clear our plan would work. And then the pandemic closed our doors for two years. But ten years in? This building that once felt like a leap of faith is now bursting at the seams with creativity. While commercial transfers with Mirvish, global touring, and a partnership with Soulpepper Theatre have all broadened our reach, this space remains at the centre of what we do.

Within our walls, we are creating unforgettable theatrical experiences that Toronto audiences recognize as their own. Listening closely, we’ve seen a strong appetite emerge for stories that reflect our city, our country, and our distinctly Canadian vantage point on the world.

This season, we’re presenting five world premieres and four sweeping CanLit adaptations alongside daring new works, intimate Shakespeare, and the return of Rogers v. Rogers – extraordinary stories that are funny, provocative, and alive to the contradictions of the world we’re living in.

Seeds planted through our Canadian Literature Adaptation Fund have bloomed, bringing some of the most ambitious and beloved works we’ve ever commissioned to the stage.

Big ideas and intimate stories, sharp political insight and generous humour, epic journeys and deeply personal reckonings. These are plays that

entertain, provoke, invite you to the table, and transport you in equal measure. They are made to be shared, argued over, and experienced in real time, together with your neighbours.

This season also marks an affirming shift in what we call ourselves. Made possible through a transformational gift from B Street Collaborative, and in recognition of our tenth anniversary in this home, Streetcar Crowsnest will now be known as Crow’s Theatre, declaring what has long been true: this building and this company are inseparable.

As we enter our second decade in our home, we are deeply grateful – to the artists who shape us, the partners who help us grow, and especially the audiences who keep returning.

The Ghosts of Mariupol

Theatre in the aftermath of catastrophe.

As Ukraine enters the fifth year of Russia’s ongoing invasion, Christopher Morris presents a powerful new work inspired by the artists who survived the March 2022 bombing of Ukraine’s historic Donetsk Academic Regional Drama Theatre in Mariupol.

The play follows two actresses, best friends whose lives are forever changed by the bombing. One collaborates with Russians in the rebuilt Mariupol Theatre. The other creates theatre for injured Ukrainian soldiers in Western Ukraine. Both are haunted by the choices they made that day to survive.

The Ghosts of Mariupol confronts impossible questions about survival, collaboration, truth, and resistance. It asks: when war shatters moral clarity, what’s the true cost of survival? And how do you hold on to yourself when war has changed you forever?

A show about promises and other things we meant at the time.

From Matt Baram, Naomi Snieckus, and Kat Sandler, the creative trio behind the hit production Big Stuff, comes a bold and playful new show about the promises we make to the people we love, the people we barely know, and ourselves.

On the way to Los Angeles after their low-key civil ceremony at Toronto City Hall, Matt and Naomi made a promise to themselves: no more corporate gigs, no moving back to Toronto, and a proper wedding within five years.

Five years later…

There’s no wedding planned. They’re back in Toronto. And most awkwardly of all, they’re there for a corporate gig.

With light audience interaction throughout, We Swear blurs the line between personal vows and public confession, reminding us that keeping our promises rarely happens in grand gestures but in the daily, awkward work of trying to keep our word. Or at the very least…remembering what we promised in the first place.

From the original mind of Brad Gira comes a campy, high-stakes comedy that reimagines the legendary 20-mile (or 32-kilometre) trek of Canadian folk hero Laura Secord.

Secord’s journey helped thwart an American attack during the War of 1812, though it was largely ignored during her lifetime – and many now only know her as a chocolate brand. This comedy pokes at a story we thought was settled –revealing the human pulse beneath the legend and reminding us that even our most fixed histories began as acts of risk.

With wit and irreverence, Laura Secord’s Thing unpacks myth, memory, and the farcical spectre of national storytelling.

Rogers v. Rogers

Last season’s sold-out hit returns.

After a record-breaking, sold-out run at Crow’s last season, Rogers v. Rogers returns for a limited run at Canadian Stage.

Telecom tycoon Ted Rogers built an empire by turning Canada’s airwaves into cash. Now his son Edward, long dismissed by his father, is fighting for control of the family business. Meanwhile, shrewd public servant Matthew Boswell is determined to derail Rogers’ multibillion-dollar takeover of Shaw Communications.

Inspired by one of the most dramatic boardroom showdowns in Canadian history, this riveting drama examines the price of pushing back, the unraveling bonds of kin, and the legacy that money can – and cannot – buy.

From award-winning playwright Michael Healey, writer of The Master Plan and The Drawer Boy, comes a story of outsized ambition, personal grudges, and corporate power. Rogers v. Rogers is performed by acclaimed stage actor Tom Rooney, whose celebrated work includes Crow’s productions of Fifteen Dogs and Uncle Vanya.

The Wrong Bashir

Written by Zahida Rahemtulla

Directed by Paolo Santalucia

The right name but the wrong man.

Following its hit run in Crow’s 2023.24 season, Zahida Rahemtulla’s fast-paced, original, laugh-out-loud comedy returns to Toronto at the CAA Theatre.

Bashir Ladha, a bohemian philosophy podcaster, is mistakenly tapped for a prestigious religious post his parents have already accepted on his behalf. As officials arrive and his jubilant family floods in to celebrate, the case of mistaken identity explodes into a fast-paced farce that asks whether the seemingly wrong Bashir might, in fact, be the right one.

The Wrong Bashir invites us to look at values passed down through generations, the ties of community, and how we are shaped by those who love us most – even when we try to run away from them.

↘ In Person: 345 Carlaw Ave, Toronto Opens at 12 PM for matinee performances and 6 PM for evening performances.

Crow’s Theatre Fees and Exchanges

↘ Each ticket is subject to a $5.00 plus HST service charge.

↘ Ticket and subscription sales are final and non-refundable.

↘ Tickets may be exchanged for a future performance of the same production, subject to availability, by contacting our box office up to 24 hours prior to the original performance time. There is a $5 exchange service fee that is waived for subscribers.

↘ Patrons may donate unused tickets up to 24 hours prior to show time for a charitable tax receipt.

Accessibility

↘ Crow’s Theatre is fully accessible to wheelchair and mobility device users. Please contact the box office to book wheelchair-accessible seating or for any additional assistance.

↘ Assistive listening devices are available. Please reserve in advance or request upon arrival.

↘ Complimentary attendant care and companion tickets are available for patrons living with a disability who require assistance. Please call ahead to book.
