Dear Friends,
Greetings on behalf of the 71 dynamic women who comprise the Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated on the occasion of our 19th Annual Mardi Gras Gala in partnership with The Links Foundation, Incorporated. We are grateful for your generosity in supporting our scholarship and community service programming endeavor in this way.
Since its chartering in 1993, the Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter has exemplified service through transformative, award-winning programming and scholarship. In 2025, with your support, we awarded more than $95,000 in scholarships to students pursuing higher education and inducted 29 students into the Crown Jewels NSBE Jr. Chapter in partnership with Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology. Our initiatives included an early literacy program for K–5 students in Title I Charlotte schools, integrating culturally responsive reading, mentoring, creative expression, wellness, civic awareness, and global engagement. We also expanded our Link Tank program, empowering high school and college students of color with entrepreneurship education, mentorship, and pathways from idea development to venture execution. In addition, through our Emerald Plate initiative, we provided holiday meals to families across our community, ensuring that households experienced nourishment, dignity, and care during the season of giving.
I extend heartfelt congratulations and thanks to our 2026 Mardi Gras Gala King and Queen, Hugh and Natalie Allen, and the past Mardi Gras Gala Kings and Queens for their presence and continued support A very special thank you to all our generous Sponsors and Mrs. Kelley Mitchell, Mardi Gras Gala Chair, Mrs. Evease Tucker Mardi Gras Gala CoChair, and the entire Fundraising Committee for their leadership and diligence in making tonight’s celebration with a purpose possible.
Thank you for joining us tonight. May your generosity shine as brightly as the festivities, and may you revel in the joy of making a difference! Laissez les bons temps rouler!
Yours in friendship and service, Evette Beckett-Tuggle

Office of the Southern Area Director
February 14, 2026
Greetings Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter and Guests,
It is an honor to bring greetings as the Southern Area Director of The Links, Incorporated. On behalf of more than 5,000 members and the Southern Area Executive Board, I extend heartfelt congratulations to the officers, members, and friends of the Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter on the occasion of your Mardi Gras Fundraiser
For more than three decades, since your establishment on June 19, 1993, the Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter has delivered meaningful, sustainable service through the five programmatic thrusts of The Links, Incorporated. Your work is impactful, far-reaching, and transformative.
Among your many notable initiatives is your partnership with Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology, a STEM magnet high school, through which the chapter sustained a National Society of Black Engineers Junior Chapter and inducted 74 students. The chapter’s steadfast support of Historically Black Colleges and Universities is equally commendable, including an initial $25,000 endowment to Johnson C. Smith University, financial assistance to graduating students at Morgan State University and international students attending other HBCUs, and business etiquette training for 200 HBCU students in collaboration with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
The Southern Area is stronger because of your unwavering commitment to the mission of The Links, Incorporated, and for admirably representing the ideals of our beloved organization with grace and distinction. I am confident that you will continue this level of outstanding service because you are Friends Transforming Communities Through Service. Thank you for Leading with Intentional Friendship and Service in the Southern Area.
Warmest regards,
Vanessa Falls

The Crown Jewels Make a Difference
Once chartered, the Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated immediately began to make an impact in the community by performing activities and participating in projects to help improve the lives of others in areas of education, health awareness, wellness, history, civics and the arts with a strong commitment of service to others locally and internationally. Five facets of focus encompass activities and projects that revolve around the chapter's commitment of service.
The chapter has been recognized for many signature projects including the creation of historical decor in one of Charlotte's 1890's shotgun houses which once stood next to the original Harvey B. Gantt Arts Center at Little Rock AME Zion church in Uptown. Visitors flocked from many areas of the country to visit these historic relics where African Americans once lived in the First Ward community.
In 2004, the Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter joined with the Charlotte (NC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and the Junior League of Charlotte to host a Grand Opening event held at the new Nordstrom store in South Park Mall. It was one of the largest and most noteworthy social events ever held in Charlotte at the time. Proceeds from Nordstrom after the event provided $60,000 to the chapter to establish the Community Impact Fund for a signature project which helped create the Double Oaks Community Resource Center.
In years to follow, the Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter fulfilled financial pledges to the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts and Culture and a financial commitment which created a scholarship endowment fund at Johnson C. Smith University which continues to award scholarships. In addition, the Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter to date has awarded more than $300,000 in scholarships directly from the chapter to students for education assistance at various colleges and universities through 2025. The chapter has also contributed more than $25,000 to Susan B. Komen Charlotte for breast cancer research.
In 2016, the chapter chartered a National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Junior chapter at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology. The Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter continues to have a thriving partnership with the school today, which helps to create student success stories in engineering.
The Crown Jewels Classics Through the Ages Program has provided exposure and support to students in the performing arts. Student dancer Elyn Jenkins enrolled in the Charlotte Ballet Academy with the support of the chapter's program, and performed in the Nutcracker in December 2024 at the Knight Theater in Charlotte.
In 2025 and during 2026, the Chapter will expand its impact through focused literacy and college and career readiness initiatives. Through its K–5 literacy programming, the Chapter addressed early learning gaps by distributing culturally responsive books, facilitating read-aloud experiences, integrating arts-based literacy activities, and engaging families and educators in support of student confidence and comprehension. Complementing this work, the Chapter’s LinkTank initiative provides HBCU students with entrepreneurship training, financial literacy education, mentorship, and pitch development experiences. Students are supported through workshops, professional guidance, and seed funding opportunities designed to strengthen pathways to STEAM careers, economic mobility, and leadership development.
Other programs supported and sponsored by the Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter include contributions and donations to Samaritan's Feet and Dress for Success. Personal care kits have also been delivered from the chapter to those in need in foreign countries and to foreign students studying in Charlotte.
Numerous programs created and implemented by the chapter have been recognized with nominations and received awards from the Southern Area Conference and the National Assembly of the Links, Incorporated.
Collectively, women who have been blessed individually have come together as members of the Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated to offer their many talents and gifts to the Charlotte area community and beyond.

The Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated’s Annual Mardi Gras Gala fundraiser was first held in 2005 and was developed out of the need to provide funds for chapter programs and scholarships. It was created with the inception of ideas from four Crown Jewels (NC) Chapter members who served during that time as President Mary Foxx Johnson, Fundraising Chair Lyn Coaldwell, Vice President of Membership Cassandra Henderson, and Mary Wilson.
It began with 125 guests and continues today with more than 800 guests in attendance. This signature fundraising event funds chapter programs and scholarships. The chapter is truly grateful for the support it receives from sponsors, donors, patrons, and guests each year.

MEMBERS OF THE CROWN JEWELS (NC) CHAPTER OF THE LINKS,
INCORPORATED ARE DELIGHTED TO RECOGNIZE HUGH AND NATALIE
ALLEN AS THE KING AND QUEEN OF THE CHAPTER'S 19TH ANNUAL 2026 MARDI GRAS GALA
KING AND QUEEN
Hugh and Natalie Allen are community servant leaders who have built their individual careers defined by impact, integrity, and vision. Together, they exemplify what it means to invest not only in institutions, but also in people and possibility. Hugh W. Allen is Head of U.S. Commercial Real Estate for TD Bank, one of the 10 largest banks in the U.S., with primary operations spanning from Maine to Florida. His work focuses on banking for private real estate developers, REITs and commercial real estate funds, mortgage warehouse lending, New Market Tax Credits, Low Income Housing Tax Credit investments, and affordable housing construction financing. Previously, Hugh served as Regional President for TD Bank’s Mid South Region, overseeing commercial and branch banking across a multi state footprint from Delaware to South Carolina.
Throughout his career, Hugh has been recognized as a steady and forward thinking leader who understands the vital role financial institutions play in strengthening communities. Hugh provided significant leadership in the development of TD Bank's 2024 $20 Billion Community Impact Plan, outlining the Bank's commitment to communities TD serves through residential mortgages, branch banking in low-tomoderate income communities, small business lending, community development lending and investment, CRA qualified philanthropy, consumer products, supplier diversity and more. He previously worked with PNC Bank, First Union/Wachovia and Wells Fargo.
Equally dedicated to civic engagement, Hugh currently serves on the boards of The National Urban League, The Hydrocephalus Association, The Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC), and The Research Triangle Foundation. In 2022, he was appointed by North Carolina Governor, Roy Cooper, to serve a two year term on the NCWorks Commission, reflecting both his professional expertise and his commitment to public service. Hugh is also an active and dedicated member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated. Hugh earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas and his MBA from the Duke University Fuqua School of Business.
Natalie Frazier Allen is an attorney, arts advocate, and visionary nonprofit leader whose work centers on protecting and uplifting children impacted by violence. Her career is shaped by a belief that creativity, safety, and opportunity are essential to healing and long term success. Raised in New York City as the daughter of a classically trained music teacher, Natalie experienced firsthand how t he arts can broaden a child’s world and open doors that once seemed closed.
That belief led her to found The Arts Empowerment Project, an organization dedicated to serving youth referred through child welfare, juvenile justice, and community partners. The Arts Empowerment Project provides children with a safe space for self expression, skill building, and belonging—often at moments of profound vulnerability. Natalie currently serves as CEO, and since launching its pilot program in 2014, The Arts Empowerment Project has served more than 4,000 students, offering not only creative outlets but also pathways to hope, resilience, and links to new opportunities.
Natalie previously served as Chief of the Domestic Violence Unit in the District of Columbia’s Attorney General’s Office and has been a tireless advocate for victims of abuse. Her commitment to children extended to her service as a Guardian ad Litem volunteer in Charlotte County, where she worked with the court system for several years to represent the best interests of abused and neglected children. Her board service reflects a deep commitment to arts, education, and community well ‑ being. Natalie has served on the Mint Museum Board of Trustees, the Harvey B. Gantt Center Board of Directors, the Youth Villages Board of Advisors, and the Women’s Impact Fund Board of Directors. She currently serves on the VAPA Center’s Board of Directors and the Mint Museum’s Board of Advisors, and previously served as Board Chair of the Mint Museum’s Board of Trustees. Natalie is also a proud and active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. She earned her J.D. from the George Washington National Law Center and her B.A., magna cum laude, from Spelman College, and is admitted to the bars of Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. Since moving to Charlotte in 2007 with their two children, Hugh and Natalie have shared a commitment to using their talents, resources, and leadership to support the arts and humanities, economic development, and initiatives that strengthen children and families. Their philosophy of giving back is rooted in the belief that meaningful change requires both immediate action and long term vision—investing today in systems, institutions, and people that will uplift generations yet to come.
