Beyond Speech Nitzavim and Rosh Hashanah: The Connection By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz This week's Torah portion, Nitzavim, is always read on the Shabbat before Rosh Hashanah. There are so many things about this portion that connect to Rosh Hashanah. Nitzavim speaks of our commitment to G‑d, His Torah and mitzvahs. It teaches about teshuvah (repentance) and foretells our return to G‑d in this dark exile, how G‑d will gather us from the farthest places. Since the parshah speaks about teshuvah as the prelude to the in-gathering of the exiles, and being that we want it to happen already, let’s talk about teshuvah. Teshuvah means return to G‑d. On a basic level this means, to regret your past ways, ask for forgiveness and get back on G‑d's path. When a person has broken trust and wants to be trusted again, acting remorseful and saying "I'm sorry" is not enough. He needs to reach higher, find a greater level of character and prove himself worthy of forgiveness. Yet, teshuvah can be so much more. Even the holiest of people can tap in to the power of teshuvah. The verse1 says, "and you will return until the L‑rd your G‑d." When you say return, it implies going back to a place or situation you were in before. What place are we speaking of here? This takes us to a whole new level of teshuvah, to a place where we are in perfect harmony with G‑d. Each of us has a neshamah, a piece of G‑d inside of us. It is our essence. Over time we can become so involved in the physical, mundane world that our neshamah gets forgotten. Even mitzvahs can be done out of habit, void of meaning.

Teshuvah is connecting to your G‑dly essence, your neshamah. It is a journey to your core. Every step you take inward, brings clarity. You see how you are one with G‑d and that He loves you because you are part of Him. When you connect at this level, the more elementary forms of teshuvah follow automatically. How could you remain the same after connecting so deeply? Regret, remorse and bitterness over your previous state will overtake you, and you become closer to G‑d. Since our neshamah is infinite, there are always deeper/higher levels to connect to. Through teshuvah even a tzadik can find new levels of G‑dliness with which to connect. Your essence it already there, your neshamah has always been at the highest level. You now have to "return until G‑d," return to where your neshamah is one with G‑d. Since He is infinite, so is our journey, giving us the ability to get ever closer. Suffering also brings you closer to G‑d. We have suffered enough. Perhaps G‑d wants our closeness to come from our own initiative. As a father and husband, I love my family to no end, like any father and husband would, and still, there is great pleasure when the love and closeness from my family is of their own initiative. In preparation for Rosh Hashanah, let us take the initiative to get closer to G‑d. May He, with his fatherly love, send Moshiach and gather the exiles and bring us home. May you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year.

Story Time Bitterness In A HAPPY TUNE THE SOUR FOOD WHICH BECAME SWEET
these words are read in a joyful tune (with the trup “kadma v’azla”). What joy is there in this?
When the Alter Rebbe was in jail in Petersburg he did not eat anything, because of kashrus reasons. One minister, who appreciated the greatness of the Alter Rebbe, wanted to bring him kosher food. The Alter Rebbe asked him to bring him food called eingemachts - bitter radish cooked in honey. The Rebbe explained to the minister that since he hadn’t eaten in a long time, his intestines had shrunk and this food was good for expanding his intestines.
Nobody was able to answer this question to please the rich man and he invalidated all candidates so the town remained without a rav.
Chassidim explained that the deeper reason that he had chosen this dish was because after the arrest there developed a new manner of avodas Hashem that hadn’t existed previously. It’s like it is explained in Tanya that Hashem has two types of pleasure, one from sweet dishes and one from sharp or sour dishes that are sweetened which, in man’s avoda, is iskafia, a great avoda. (Reshimos Devarim p. 92) BITTERNESS IN A HAPPY TUNE In a certain town there was a man who was not a big Torah scholar but was a strongminded wealthy man and nothing could be done in the town without his consent, not even the choosing of a rav. When a rabbi would come and present his candidacy as rav of the community, this rich man would demand that he answer this serious question: Why is it that, when reading in the Torah about the servitude in Egypt, and the words “and they embittered their lives,”

Along came a Lubavitcher Torah scholar to apply for the rabbanus. When the rich man asked his question, the Chassid explained according to the teachings of Chabad: There is sadness and there is bitterness and they are not identical. Sadness is depression which leads to weakness without any thought of the possibility for rectification, while bitterness, although it is a state of dissatisfaction, it’s not to the point of despairing of rectification. On the contrary, bitterness inspires rectification and leads to making efforts to fix things with faith and trust that one will be successful, with G-d’s help. This is why “and they embittered their lives” is read with a joyful tune. This pleased the rich man and the Lubavitcher Chassid got the position. (Zichronos V’Sippurim Yisrael Zushe Yevzelin-Dvoretz) WHEN THE KING OPENS THE DOOR, HE LEAVES The Rebbe said to a Chassid who complained about stray thoughts when praying, “I heard from my father-in-law, the Rebbe, an analogy about stray thoughts in prayer. It’s like a person knocking on the door of the king and when the king opens the door, he walks away.”

Cake 2 eggs 1 cup sugar 1 cup oil 1 cup milk (I used almond, such as Gefen Almond Milk, to keep it parve) 3 cups flour 3 teaspoons Haddar Baking Powder 1 teaspoon Gefen Cinnamon
1. In a bowl, mix all the cake batter ingredients together. Pour into a very well greased tube pan. (I used a bundt and kept the cake upside down.)
Crumbs 1 cup flour 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon Gefen Cinnamon 1/3 – 1/2 cup oil 1 medium apple, peeled and diced small
