Hello, Am I Home? By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz

This week’s haftarah is read twice: once with on Parshat Noach and then again as the fifth haftorah of consolation on the week of Ki Teitzei. The haftorah has a double theme. First, that when Moshiach comes, things will be so good that we will forget the hardships of the exile. Second, that the redemption will be final, never to be followed by another exile. The haftarah begins: “Sing, barren one who has not given birth.” Who is the “barren one”? The simple explanation is that G‑d is talking to the city of Jerusalem, which feels like a barren woman, bereft of children. Although she had been desolate during this long exile, G‑d tells her to sing—as now that Moshiach is here, her streets are once again filled with her children, the Jewish people. She doesn’t feel barren any more. On a deeper level, Hashem is talking to those Jews who claim they are barren and have not given birth to Him. Meaning, he has totally disassociated himself from the Jewish nation. G‑d is saying that even He will sing a “new song”—the song we will sing when Moshiach comes. The revelation will be so great that we will break out in song, just as we did at the splitting of the sea. Every Jewish person will be included, even one who is “barren” of mitzvahs and in the darkest place. The revelation and transformation will be so great that he, too, will break out into song. The exile will then seem as a fleeting dream, as the haftorah says, “for a brief moment I forsook you.”We read in Tehillim (Psalms), when G‑d returns the exiles of Zion, we will say that “we

will have been as dreamers.” A dream feels real, but when you wake up, it fades away. This will be because, as the next verse continues: “With a little wrath, I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness, I will have compassion on you . . . ” When Moshiach comes, it will be so good, that the exile will feel like a brief moment. Now the haftorah says: “Like the waters of Noach this is to me. Just as I swore to never again cover the earth with the waters of Noach, so have I sworn not to be wrathful with you and not to rebuke you.” This verse is self-explanatory, except that G‑d calls the flood “the waters of Noach.” Why? Because the word “Noach” is like the word nachat (“satisfaction”), indicating that it is positive because it changed the world for good. The same is true about this exile. When Moshiach comes, we will see how everything we went through in this exile directly made the world ready for Moshiach. The reading concludes, that when Moshiach comes “ . . . My kindness will never depart from you, and my covenant of peace will never falter.” Like bookends, this haftorah is read before and after the holiday season, and it sets the tone for the whole year because bringing Moshiach is at the core of our mission as the Jewish people. Like beacons of light, it is read at the beginning and the end of the year to remind us that though our work is difficult and the exile dark, what we are accomplishing is tremendous and our reward is even greater. Perhaps it is your effort, your mitzvah, which will finally tip the scale and bring Moshiach. May he come soon.

Story Time

Why Did the Jew Flee the Yechidus? A HOLE IN THE REBBE’S HEART I heard the following story from the mashpia R’ Yaakov Yehoshua Laufer. A person named R’ Shlomo Hertz, a baal teshuva, went to the Rebbe and said that he had tried on various occasions to get some of his relatives to put on tefillin, but hadn’t succeeded; each time they pushed him off with a different excuse. The Rebbe told him that any Jew who still doesn’t put on tefillin causes him a hole in the heart (G-d forbid). WHY DID THE JEW FLEE THE YECHIDUS? The Chassid R’ Avraham Shmuel Bukiet a’h, once told this story at a farbrengen: Someone once went to his father, Rabbi Chaim Meir Bukiet, asking for help getting a yechidus with the Rebbe in the near future. Rabbi Bukiet contacted the secretariat and arranged one for the coming nights. The day after the yechidus, the secretary called and asked what the story was with the man he’d sent. It turned out that in the middle of the yechidus the man had turned around and simply fled the room. Rabbi Bukiet contacted the man and asked what had happened. Embarrassed, he eventually explained. He was raising money for his son’s wedding, but didn’t have enough to marry him off respectably. When soliciting rabbanim and admorim, fearing he’d be turned away for having too small a family, he said he had ten children and when he went to a chassidic admor, he would write a note with the names of his three real children plus several fictional ones. At his yechidus with the Rebbe, he handed in

the same note. The Rebbe went down the list, and upon reaching the first invented name, looked at him sharply and asked: “And who is this?” In that instant he realized nothing could be hidden from the Rebbe’s all-seeing gaze. Overcome with fear, he simply fled the room. The next day the secretary called again. After hearing the man’s story, the Rebbe had instructed that he be given a generous donation toward his son’s wedding. HIS ALL-SEEING EYES I heard this from R’ Levi Zeitlin: Each year before Pesach, the Montreal community held a raffle among many of Anash of Montreal to choose who would bring matzos from the Rebbe back to Anash of Montreal. The challenge was that the shliach could only leave after the Rebbe’s matzah distribution at midday on Erev Pesach and he had to reach Montreal before Yom Tov began. One year R’ Zeitlin won. The secretaries gave him an early slot in line, and a taxi waited outside 770 to rush him to the airport. When the Rebbe started the distribution, Rabbi Groner mentioned to the Rebbe that the shliach heading to Montreal that day was present. The Rebbe raised his hands in apparent surprise: “To Montreal?!” R’ Zeitlin confirmed it, and the Rebbe gave him the matzos. The reason for that “surprise” became clear shortly. The taxi driver took a wrong turn and dropped him at the wrong airport. He missed his flight and spent the first day of Pesach in New York. The Rebbe’s all-seeing eyes.

Tomato and Spinach Tortellini Soup By Esty Wolbe, Kosher.com

40 Minutes

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

2 tablespoons Gefen Olive Oil

1. Sauté onion for a few minutes. Lower heat, add garlic, and sauté until fragrant (about three to four minutes).

1 large onion, diced 5 cloves garlic, minced salt, to taste pepper, to taste 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 (15-ounce) can diced tomatoes 4 cups vegetable broth 1 package New York Pasta Authority Tortellini (your favorite variety) 1 (8-ounce) package fresh baby spinach

2. Add salt, pepper and oregano. Add diced tomatoes. Bring up to a simmer, then add vegetable broth. Bring to a boil. 3. Add frozen tortellini and simmer nine minutes, stirring occasionally. Add spinach and use a spoon or spatula to submerge in the hot soup to assist in wilting. Simmer one minute more and serve.
