Bamidbar and Shavuot: The Intrinsic Connection

The parshah of Bamidbar is always read before Shavuot, the day the Jewish people received the Torah at Mount Sinai. What is the connection between Bamidbar and Shavuot?

Regarding the days leading up to receiving the Torah, the Talmud tells us: “On the second of Sivan, Moses ascended the mountain . . . On the third day he ascended . . . On the fourth day he ascended . . . On the fifth of Sivan he built an altar and offered a sacrifice.”

It is obvious that G‑d gave the command to build the altar and bring a sacrifice. But why did Moses have to busy himself with building the altar, moving stones and constructing it? Couldn’t it have been done by others? Wasn’t this the day before receiving the Torah? Wouldn’t his time be better spent ascending the mountain, reaching new spiritual heights?

We must conclude that building the altar was something that only Moses could have done, and that it was more important than ascending the mountain.

The day before every Shabbat and Yom Tov is called erev Shabbat or erev Yom Tov. It is the time we prepare for the Sabbath and/or other Jewish holiday. But more than that, it is a time that a ray of holiness of the upcoming holy day is already shining, and is therefore part of the upcoming holy day, which in our case is Shavuot.

The essence of Shavuot is that G‑d Himself descended onto Mount Sinai—a move that was unheard of. Yes, there were times when G‑d appeared to our forefathers. But those were visions of an expression of His, not essence. G‑d Himself descending on the physical mountain is what the Torah is all about, and it is at the core of our mission as Jews: to take this physical, mundane world and infuse it with G‑dliness, uplifting the mundane to make it holy. We do this through performing mitzvahs with physical objects, and by using our day to day activities to

aid us in our service to G‑d, thereby turning our most physical, mundane and rudimentary actions into holy endeavors.

This is also the reason why G‑d didn’t bring us up into the spiritual realms to give us the Torah. Rather, He chose to do it in the physical world on a mountain. This demonstrates that our interaction with the physical is most important.

Erev Shavuot, the fifth of Sivan, was already part of the Shavuot dynamic. The command to build the altar and bring a sacrifice was part of the giving of the Torah. Every part of this was done with and through Moses. He had the special soul—one that could actualize the process of receiving and implementing the Torah, G‑d’s will. Each of us has a part of Moses in our souls, which gives us a boost of strength to do our mission, to uplift the physical world, making it into a place where G‑d’s presence can dwell openly.

Building the altar was a clear demonstration. He took stones, which are physical and mundane, and made it into a holy altar. Offering a sacrifice—an animal that is also physical and mundane—completed the altar because now it was actually used for its holy purpose.

Bamidbar means “in the desert.” The Torah was given to us in a desert, where nothing grows and no one lives. Why? Because it is symbolic of the lowest level of the physical and mundane. This shows us that we can and should infuse even that with holiness.

With this understanding, all of us said: “We will do and we will listen.” By first saying “we will do,” we confirmed that we understood that our purpose was to interact with the physical and raise it up.

Shavuot and Bamidbar convey the same message: That we can change the world and make it a dwelling place for G‑d’s presence, which we will witness at the conclusion of our mission with the coming of Moshiach. May he come soon!

Chassidim Work Hard

CHASSIDUS ONLY FROM A ‘BAAL AVODA’

The elder Chassidim, the first students of the Alter Rebbe, repeated one of the first teachings that they heard from the Rebbe when he returned from Mezeritch.

In that maamar, he explained at length that Torah in general, and Chassidus in particular, should be heard only from someone who is an oveid, i.e. one who toils to fix his middos, and they should beware a “Chassidic liar,” who says Chassidus but doesn’t do it.

The Rebbe Rayatz added: Chassidus needs to be heard only from a “baal avoda,” from someone who takes time over his tefilla, who is immersed is examining his thoughts, speech, and actions to see whether they are what Chassidus wants them to be. An oveid like this should be listened to and every word he says should be cherished.

I WAS NEVER Into THIS NONSENSE

After the histalkus of the Rebbe Rashab, his son, the Rebbe Rayatz was very sick and his condition was serious. He was once lying there without moving and they immediately called a doctor. The doctor examined the Rebbe, said to give certain injections, and left. Since it was urgent to give these injections to the Rebbe, they called a gentile nurse who was young and fair, to give the injection to the Rebbe.

When she gave him the injection, the Rebbe did not react and did not open his eyes, but the nurse said that the injection definitely helped even though he did not open his yes, and that his not opening his eyes was not understandable. When she finished, she left for her home.

One of the tmimim, who was a member of the Rebbe’s household, was in the room where the Rebbe lay. When the nurse moved about the room, an improper thought came to his mind.

As soon as the nurse left the room, the Rebbe opened his eyes and said, “Believe me that I was never immersed in this childish nonsense.” The tamim understood that the Rebbe had sensed what he had been thinking.

HE REFUSED TO BE A TZADDIK AS A GIFT

Once, when the Alter Rebbe was in the mikva, he said to the gaon, Rabbi Eizik of Homil who was standing nearby, “Eizik, come into the mikva and I will raise you up to the level of a Tzaddik.”

R’ Eizik said, “Rebbi, I don’t want it. Better to be a Beinoni through independent work than a Tzaddik through a gift.”

In his old age, he said he regretted this because he should have accepted it as a gift and his avoda and toil could have been in the realm of “and do good.”

CHASSIDIM WORK HARD

After a reprinting of the Alter Rebbe’s Likkutei Torah, a copy was presented to Radatz, (R’ Dovid Tzvi Chein of Tchernigov). The printer remarked that he found and corrected 3000 printing errors. The Radatz seemed to be displeased, and explained that previously there were many parts of Likkutei Torah that were difficult to understand due to these errors. Upon encountering such a section, the Chassidim would exert themselves and increase their study amid great energetic discussion until they arrived at a solution. Now (due to the corrections) everything will be easy to learn, they will not have to exert themselves, and everyone will learn a little bit and then go to sleep!

Recipe of the week

INGREDIENTS

1 tablespoon neutral oil (peanut, grape, avocado or canola)

3 cubes Gefen Frozen Garlic or 3 cloves minced

1/4 cup honey

1/2 cup Haddar Less Sodium Soy Sauce

2 tablespoons light brown sugar

2 tablespoons Gefen Cornstarch

PREPARATION

1. In a small saucepan over a medium flame, heat one tablespoon neutral oil and add three cloves each of Gefen brand frozen garlic and ginger cubes. Sauté until fragrant.

2. Combine honey, reduced sodium soy sauce, and brown sugar. Add to garlic and ginger. Mix well and bring to a light boil.

3. Meanwhile make a slurry (thickener) by combining (cold) water and two

1-2 teaspoons sesame oil sesame seeds green onion slices white rice veggies of choice

1/3 bag Meal Mart Chicken Nuggets

3 cubes Dorot Gardens Frozen Ginger or 1 tablespoon fresh crushed ginger

tablespoons corn starch. Shake in a jar or whisk well.

4. When the mixture comes to a boil, add your slurry and again whisk well to remove any lumps. Your sauce will begin to thicken. Add sesame oil. If your sauce is too thick, you can add extra water.

5. Coat chicken in sauce and serve over white rice and or steamed vegetables sprinkle with sesame seeds and garnish with sliced green onions.
