Beyond Speech

Why Yosef Matters to Us By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz It seems that my family and I were chosen to endure difficult challenges, with which we struggle every day. It is hard to rise above them, but there is nothing more gratifying then overcoming a challenge. Even though the challenge still exists, and the hardships endure, we try to find ways to overcome them. How enjoyable is it that I can make another person happy, and I am grateful to G-d that even in my present state I have found ways to do it. This week we read how Joseph bound his brothers with an oath, that when G-d “raises you out of this”—meaning, when He takes your descendants out of Egypt—they will take his bones with them to be buried in Israel. The Torah then ends the book of Genesis with this verse: “Joseph died at the age of one hundred and ten years, and he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.” Why was it the responsibility of all the children of Israel to take Joseph’s bones; why not only his own children? Why is Joseph the focus of the end of the portion? When the Torah chooses to finish a book with a verse, there is a significant message in that verse. What message is there? The people of Israel are about to begin a most difficult and horrific exile in Egypt. G-d gives them the psychological tools necessary to deal with it. These are lessons here for all future exiles, including the present one. First, we need to know that there is an end and a purpose to this exile. G-d will not only take us out of our present state,

but He will “raise us out of this.” We will be raised to a higher level; we will see and enjoy the fruits of all the work, toil and suffering. Knowing this will help us overcome the difficulties we encounter. Second, we need to be like Joseph. Joseph became the ruler of Egypt. He rose above and ruled even while in exile. We too can be like Joseph. We can rise above and rule our present circumstances. Like Joseph, we are in it, but it doesn’t control us. Third, Joseph stays with us until we leave exile. Every Jew was obligated to carry Joseph. He is there for each and every one of them. When things are difficult, think of Joseph, realize that you too can be like him and rise above any challenges that come our way. Still, this exile has dragged on long enough. May G-d remove the suffering and challenges, and give us revealed good now.

Story Time THE PRAYER THAT UPROOTED KEFIRA THE PRAYER THAT UPROOTED KEFIRA In Romania there was a boy who studied a lot of sifrei chakira. As a result, he had many doubts and questions about faith until he decided to convert. One Shabbos morning, he went to the church to speak with a priest but as he walked down the street he saw a crowd and it was hard for him to pass through. Seeing a friend, he asked him what was going on. “Boor! Don’t you know that Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev came to town and everyone is going to hear his holy prayer?” He forgot about his plan and joined the others in going to shul to hear the prayer of the tzaddik, but it was very crowded and it took a long time until he managed to get close to the shul. Upon arriving there, he heard the sweet voice of the tzaddik and a spirit of holiness and spiritual delight entered him. He had a strong desire to get close to the shul and he mustered all his strength until he got inside. The tzaddik was up to the bracha of “Ahavas Olam” before “V’Ha’er Eineinu” and said, “Master of the universe, you have this many angels” – and he began to enumerate how many tens of thousands of serafim and ofanim etc. there are. Then he concluded, “And they all serve You, and I too, Levi Yitzchok ben Sarah Sosha, want to serve You” And he called out with a fiery, impassioned sweet song, “V’ha’er Eineinu b’Sorasecha.” That young man was so affected that he let loose a river of tears with a broken heart and complete teshuva for his impure thoughts. As soon as the davening was over, the tzaddik went over to him, took his arm and seated

him near him and ordered him not to move from him all day. From then on, he grew in his avodas Hashem until he became a very lofty individual. (Migdal Oz, p. 268) BAGEL & BUTTER R’ Avraham the “Malach” (“angel” — son of the Maggid of Mezritch and close friend of the Alter Rebbe) once reached a state of soulful longing for G-dliness that would have caused him to expire. The Alter Rebbe realized what was taking place and forced him to eat a piece of “bagel and butter” in order to bring him down to reality and thereby save his life. In the story, R’ Avraham the Malach had engrossed himself in profound esoteric teachings to the degree that he could have expired; the second half of the story tells of the mundane bagel and butter, a tasty physical food which he was forced to eat. There is a strange twist to this story. Through the generations this story has been transmitted by Chassidim and never is the topic which he studied mentioned! Why?! We are only told of the “bagel and butter.” But the answer is that the bagel had to be eaten because he had to live — body and soul — and that he had to continue to reveal G-dliness through Torah and mitzvos in worldly matters. Here we have the obverse of the coin — eating the kosher bagel represents a positive revelation of G-dliness in worldly matters. (Sicha of Shabbos HaGadol 5746/1986)

1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Line cookie sheet with Gefen Parchment Paper and spray with nonstick cooking spray.
