When did the Rebbe establish Shifra and Puah? Shifra and Puah, an organization active in Chabad communities worldwide, was established by the Rebbe on Yom Kippur in 1977. The Rebbe took great care in forming the program, even choosing the name and direction of the organization >> A glimpse into the great care shown by the Rebbeim towards new mothers throughout seven generations. A Holy Organization Established on a Holy Day. 47 years ago, during the short break between Musaf and Mincha on Yom Kippur day, the Rebbe indicated to his secretary, Rabbi Hodokov, to seek out Rabbi Maidanchik, the head of the general Va’ad of Kfar Chabad, and deliver the following message: “The Rebbe has directed the establishment of a brand new mossad in Kfar Chabad. The purpose of this mossad is to provide valuable support to new mothers following their births. The organization was to include aid from “diapers to strollers”. Furthermore, the aid should be distributed to mothers in need and with means alike. This would help ensure that no mother in need will be ashamed to receive assistance from this new organization. Additionally, it is of utmost importance that all activities be conducted with utmost dignity.” Rav Hodokov then added, “The Rebbe has already chosen a name for this organization: Shifra and Puah. The organization that helps new mothers would appropriately be named after the two midwives who served birthing women and their babies in Mitzrayim with great Mesiras Nefesh as they bravely defied Pharaoh’s evil decree that all Jewish baby boys be killed at birth. Additionally,” he added, “The Rebbe has instructed that while the organization would initially be established in Kfar Chabad, the goal is for Shifra and Puah to spread from there to all corners of the world. Immediately upon the conclusion of Yom Kippur, Rabbi Hodokov sought out Rabbi Maidanchik. When he found him, he handed him an envelope of $1,000, the personal contribution from the Rebbe to kickstart the brand-new organization. Rabbi Maidanchik then turned to the Crown Heights community to raise the remaining seed money needed to cover the CROWN EDITION 8
initial expenses of the world’s first Shifra and Puah. The community responded generously, and Rabbi Maidanchik returned to Israel with his mind and heart set on his mission. Seven Generations of Care The fact that the Rebbe chose the holy day of Yom Kippur to announce this brand-new initiative brings to mind the famous story that happened in the times of the Alter Rebbe. Nearly 200 earlier, to the shock and surprise of many of his Chassidim, the Alter Rebbe left the shul and walked through the forest to come to the aid of a woman who had just given birth. The Alter Rebbe then went on to personally chop wood and prepare a nourishing soup along with other actions that fall under the category of Pikuach Nefesh. The Rebbe once explained that there is a very important lesson that we can learn from this story. While at times one may think that they are too occupied with noble and righteous causes to take notice of those in need of “small things”around them, such a person needs to draw inspiration from this story. For as righteous and noble as a person may be, nobody would mistake themselves to be on the level of the Alter Rebbe, who was standing at the helm of his Shul on the holiest day of the year and left his post to provide a post-partum woman with warmth and nourishing food. If such an action was not beneath the Alter Rebbe, we can all certainly make time to care for those in need around us with whatever they might find themselves lacking. It’s amazing to think that all the chessed carried out through the hundreds of branches of Shifra and Puah throughout the globe is inspired by the actions of our Rebbeim throughout the generations. A theme that stems from the story of the Alter Rebbe on Yom Kippur so many years ago continues through the actions taken by the Rebbe to establish Shifra and Puah centuries later on the very same day. Our Rebbeim have shown us a personal example of how important it is to provide support for new mothers throughout the vulnerable post-partum period.
Help Us Help You A message to the Crown Heights community in the lead-up to Shifra and Puah’s annual campaign. Last year’s fundraising campaign for Shifra and Puah was met with tremendous success. In a heartwarming display of community, over 3,700 individuals contributed very generously.
As a mother who has experienced the pampering of Shifra and Puah.
Thanks to you, we were able to expand the support provided for over 800 new mothers in our community substantially. Postpartum women in Crown Heights received healthy breakfasts, cleaning help, childcare, Shabbos meals, stipends towards convalescent homes, lactation consultations, and financial assistance for mothers in dire need.

Additionally, our expanded budget allowed for the creation of two new projects: subsidiaries for doulas and a hotline for new moms seeking emotional support. The standard services that each mother receives total around $770 per person. However, when additional financial aid is factored in for mothers in particular need, the cost can reach up to $1,200. The Rebbe expressed the desire that Shifra and Puah be able to provide valuable support for every single woman. Forty-seven years later, this remains our goal - that each woman who gives birth in Crown Heights receives the complete package of everything that Shifra and Puah Crown Heights has to offer. The Inner Meaning and Message of the Shulchan By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz In this week’s parshah, Terumah, we read about the shulchan—the intricate table that was in the Holy Temple’s outer chamber called the kodesh (holy). While the menorah (candelabra) was made of one solid piece of gold, the shulchan was made of many different pieces. The table was made of wood and overlaid with gold; all the rest of its parts were made of pure gold. The shulchan was crowned with a golden trim which zigzagged. It had a golden framework, with golden trays that held 12 loaves of bread, called “show bread.” This unleavened bread had ends that turned upward on either side, so that the two ends faced each other. On the table were two golden spoons filled with frankincense. What is the symbolism of the shulchan? How do we experience the shulchan in our lives today? According to the Zohar, the shulchan was what brought blessing of sustenance to the tables of the whole world. According to the Talmud, the crown around the shulchan is symbolic of royal wealth, which King David deserved and received. How can we harness these blessings in our own lives? By taking a deeper look at the shulchan and its parts, we find hints. First, you have a table. The table is the center of the home; therefore, it is symbolic of the home itself, the center of Jewish life. Laden with pure gold and surrounded with a royal crown, it points to our dress and sense of dignity. How do we act? Do we see ourselves as ordinary, and thus dress and act that way? Or do we see ourselves as the royalty we are—the children of G-d, the King of Kings—and act accordingly? The way we see ourselves affects the way we act.

The way we act controls the spigot of blessing to our homes. On the table was the Show Bread, which was unleavened. Bread is symbolic of our livelihood. Unleavened flat bread symbolizes humility, recognizing that our wealth is from G-d and not arrogantly thinking that it is our personal accomplishment. The bread’s ends faced each other, symbolizing love for your fellow man. The fact that it is one loaf shows that we are essentially one at our core. Frankincense is a good-smelling spice; it is white, the resin from a tree. Good smells symbolize someone who does mitzvahs. The pure white color means that it lacks ulterior motives. Just as it is from a tree, which is constantly growing, so must we constantly add in mitzvahs. Finally, it was placed on the north side—on the left of one looking out towards the entrance of the chamber—because on a Kabbalistic level, the shulchan is connected to the cognitive faculty of binah, which is on the left. Binah is the ability to take an abstract concept and develop it into a concrete, understandable and meaningful idea. This is done by breaking down the many parts of the concept and understanding them thoroughly. This refers to the study of Torah. Learning, digesting, developing, and finally, bringing it down into the concrete, making it accessible to all. This, in essence, is the Jewish home. It is a royal abode, a place of dignity, humility and love. A place of Torah and mitzvahs. A place where G-d wants to be and gives His blessings.

Story Time WAS THE REBBE A PROFESSOR? IT’S NO GAME! The mashpia, R’ Zalman Moshe HaYitzchaki, once went to the yeshiva in Otvotzk where the tmimim were unfamiliar with his unique farbrengen style. The mashpia there, R’ Chatshe Feigin, asked him to farbreng with the tmimim. R’ Zalman Moshe took a cup of mashke to say l’chaim and for half an hour didn’t say anything. Then he began to shout, “This is not a game! There is a G-dly soul and an animal soul.” All night, he just banged on the table and repeated these words. (Teshura) WAS THE REBBE A PROFESSOR? Once, when the Rebbe Rashab washed his hands for a meal, his younger brother, R’ Menachem Mendel told him in wonderment that he had just read in a Russian newspaper that medical experts had discovered a new vein which is full of a thin liquid which causes that when a person wants to remember something, he looks up, and when he wants to meditate on something, he inclines his head downward. The Rebbe didn’t like being spoken to before saying “hamotzi.” He listened but did not respond. He dried his hands, ate a shiur, and then called over his brother and went over to the bookcase with him. He took out a small volume of handwritten Chassidus of the Mittler Rebbe and showed his brother six to seven lines that speak about this vein in the brain. The Mittler Rebbe explains there that in the brain there is a vein full of vapor which moves

back and forth and aids in memory and concentration. When the vein moves toward the brain of chochma and bina, it helps memory; when it moves toward the brain of daas, it helps in thinking in depth. Therefore, we see that when a person wants to remember something, he lifts his head, and when he wants to focus on something, he bends his head downward. The Rebbe asked him, was the Mittler Rebbe a big doctor? No! He never studied medical matters, but since he knew that this is the way it is in the Seder Hishtalshelus, in Supernal Man, he understood that this is how things are with man down here ‘HOW MANIFOLD ARE YOUR WORKS, HASHEM’ The Chassid, R’ Binyamin Kletzker went to Moscow on business and visited Morosov, a Russian who owned a large fabric factory. Morosov brought him to visit the factory and showed him big machines that made new items out of raw materials. R’ Binyamin marveled at what he saw and said, “How manifold are Your works, Hashem; You made them all with wisdom!” He then entered a deveikus state, his face turned pale and he sang, “Ma rabu maasecha.” Around him people gathered in wonder, sensing that this was a holy man. Morosov and his helpers held R’ Binyamin by his arms and carefully put him into a carriage which brought him to his hotel. Throughout this time, he had no idea what was happening and he remained in a state of deveikus for hours afterward. (Heichel HaBaal Shem Tov issue 21, p. 141)

INGREDIENTS Salad 6 cups shredded red cabbage 1 cup grated carrot 1 red bell pepper, julienned 1 cup shelled edamame 3 green onions, chopped 1/2 cup sliced almonds 1/2 cup cashews Dressing 1/2 cup Haddar Mixed Nut Butter 1/3 cup low sodium soy sauce, such as Glicks Less Sodium Soy Sauce 1/4 cup Gefen Honey 2 fresh limes, squeezed 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar 1 clove garlic, crushed or 1 cube Gefen Frozen Garlic 1/2 teaspoon fresh ginger, crushed 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)

PREPARATION 1. Start by making the dressing by combining all the dressing ingredients in a bowl or in a cup blender for a smoother texture. Mix very well to combine and set aside. 2. Using a mandoline or a sharp knife, shred your cabbage thinly. Wash and clean and allow the water to drip down in a colander while cutting the rest of the ingredients. 3. Cook the shelled edamame in boiling water for eight minutes. Remove from the heat, wash, and drain. Set aside. 4. Cut the bell pepper, green onion, and shred or cut the carrots into matchsticks. 5.F inally, on a dry skillet, place your sliced almonds and toast until golden. Remove from the heat. 6. Time to assemble: Combine all the salad ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Pour the dressing and toss to combine. 7. Garnish with some more green onion and cashews.
