Doing and Listening Go Hand in Hand By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz

In preparation for the giving of the Ten Commandments, G-d says to the Jewish people: “And now, if you will truly listen to My voice, and you will keep My covenant, then you will be a treasure to Me ... ” The giving of the Ten Commandments is considered the marriage between G-d and the Jewish people. What can we learn from here about our relationship with G-d? And how could this help our personal relationships? The passuk (“verse”) stresses two parts of a relationship: listening (“if you will truly listen”) and doing (“and you will keep My covenant”). Our ancestors replied by saying: “We will do and we will listen.” Again, you have doing and listening. Our relationship with G-d manifests itself in two ways. There is “doing,” which means fulfilling mitzvahs and acting in accordance with His laws. And there is “listening,” hearing G-d’s voice. What are we to hear? The first commandment starts with the word “Anochi” (“I Am”), which is an acronym for “Ana nafshi ketavit yehavit” (“I have written My essence and given it [to you]”). G-d wants us to know Him, so He

embedded His essence in the Torah. Sometimes, we get so caught in the “doing” part that we lose the joy and meaning in what we are doing. It becomes a soulless action. G-d wants more. He wants us to listen deeply, to know Him, to know what His purpose in creating the world is. He wants more than just actions. He wants depth. Chabad Chassidic teachings help you develop this area of your relationship with G-d. These two elements are necessary in our personal relationships as well. First, there has to be the “doing” part, without which couples simply can’t function. However, the “listening” part is vital to develop strong, deep and meaningful relationships. Without listening, any relationship will eventually begin to feel hollow. This is often followed by hurt and anger. Many husbands work hard providing for their family, yet they get the feeling that their wives seem unhappy. Listening could very well be the issue. And that goes for both sides, man and woman, for communication is key. Learning how to listen will bring meaning to your relationship and a smile to the mouth of your spouse.

Story Time WHAT IS A NESHAMA? WHY MIVTZAIM ARE SUCCESSFUL In Cheshvan 5746, Rabbi Nissan Mindel, the Rebbe’s secretary, visited Eretz Yisrael. The Rebbe told him to be interviewed by Kfar Chabad magazine on a number of subjects and even dictated to him the questions and answers. Among the questions he was asked was if there is a connection between the teachings of Chabad and Chabad’s mivtzaim. He answered: Definitely. All of Chabad’s mivtzaim efforts aren’t something separate to or added to the teachings of Chassidus and the conceptual approach of Chabad, but a direct result of it. When a Jew, due to circumstances not dependent on him, the education he received, the house he grew up in, is not religiously observant, then specifically from the teachings of Chabad, as a direct conclusion from the approach of Chabad, we approach him simply and ask him to put on tefillin. What the Alter Rebbe says in Tanya that “every Jew has a G-dly soul which is part of G-d above,” and his explanations about the special powers that every neshama has, come to tangible expression when we see that Jew who we approached to put on tefillin, acquiesces immediately, generally without any excessive attempts to convince him. Outright refusals tend to be relatively rare. In other words, we distinguish between two types of things: 1) an invention or chiddush and 2) a revelation. There is a person who comes up with something new and conversely there is one who just reveals something that already exists, like Columbus discovering America. When we approach a Jew and ask him to put on tefillin and do mitzvos, we are not coming to innovate anything ; just revealing his Jewish neshama, the “part of G-d above, literally” within him, which

really wants to do mitzvos but it is in exile within the body. It is in this fact that we come to reveal a Jew’s powers – and not to innovate anything – that lies the explanation for the great success of mivtzaim. There’s no doubt that when a Lubavitcher approaches someone, this Lubavitcher, who learned Chassidus and knows well its approach as expressed in Tanya, what a neshama is and what powers it has, then approaches a Jew with tremendous confidence and consequently the success is great. (Parshiyot im HaRebbe Bamidbar pg. 157) WHAT IS A NESHAMA? The Chassid R’ Moshe Vilenker once went to the Alter Rebbe and the Rebbe asked him, “Moshe, what is Hashem, i.e. what is the Essence of G-d?” R’ Moshe remained silent. The Rebbe repeated the question three times. He also asked, “What is a neshama” and “What is emuna.” R’ Moshe was silent. When the Rebbe asked him why he was silent, he said he didn’t know the answers. The Alter Rebbe said with a smile, “And I do know?! One must say that it’s like this - the one thing that we are compelled to say exists absolutely, and aside from that nothing exists absolutely, is Hashem.” And he went on to say, “And what is a neshama? Rabeinu Yona in Shaarei Teshuva and another one of the sifrei mussar wrote that ‘it recognizes its Master’ or ‘knows its Master,’ and I added in Tanya, ‘a part of G-d above.’ That is to say, that the one within whom burns this fact that He exists absolutely and aside from Him nothing else exists, that is the neshama. Being that it’s a part of G-d above, therefore it has the passion and belief in this fact.” (Meah Shearim p. 29)

PREPARATION

1 package (12 ounces) Gefen Thin Noodles, cooked in salt water for six minutes and drained

1. Mix together noodles, oil, vanilla sugar, half a cup sugar, and six egg yolks.

1/3 cup oil 1 teaspoon Gefen Vanilla Sugar 1/2 cup plus 3/4 cup sugar, divided 6 eggs, separated 1 and 1/2 cups Gefen Ground Walnuts 1/2 package or 6 ounces ready pie or flaky dough or any pie dough 1 egg yolk

2. Fold the noodle mixture into greased 11-x-16-inch pan. Optional: spread with apricot jam. 3. Beat egg whites until stiff. Add three-fourths cup sugar and fold in walnuts. 4. Pour over noodle mixture. Prepare the Topping 1. Roll out dough on floured board to approximately 1/8-inch thickness. Place on top of nut mixture. 2. Brush with additional egg yolk.
