Know Who You Are By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz

It is already several years now since G-d has chosen to give me and my family tremendous hardships. For me, it is physically paralyzing. For my wonderful wife, Dina, it can at times be emotionally and mentally paralyzing. My children are also subjected to an unwanted rollercoaster ride. I wish and pray all the time that I will be cured, but I am grateful to G-d for the positive experiences that come from our situation. Dina and I have been blessed with an outpouring of love from so many, and our writings and Dina’s talks have been uplifting people all over. All of this would not have been possible without the darkness we have undergone, as it brought to the fore love and abilities we never knew we had. How can we not be grateful? In this week's parshah, Bo, we read about the plague of darkness. There were three days of darkness, and three days where the darkness was tangible and rendered the Egyptians immobile. At the same time, for the Jewish people, there was light. Everything that the Torah tells us is a lesson, even the plagues. What the Torah tells us about the Egyptian exile and exodus is particularly a lesson on how to deal with our present exile and future exodus. What lesson can we draw from the plague of darkness, especially from the fact that 14

there was darkness and light at the same time? Egypt is “Mitzrayim” in Hebrew, related to the word maytzarim, which means boundaries, constraints or limitations. It is symbolic of the limitations we experience in this physical world. There are times in this exile when you experience darkness in the form of heartbreak, health problems, oppression, etc. Sometimes, it seems there is no hope, and that no amount of light can overcome this darkness. Other times, it is worse; it can seem completely paralyzing. The struggle and pain we experience are very real and hard to get through. G-d is telling you that in this place of darkness can be found a great light— greater than anything you’ve experienced before. This light is transformative; it gives new perspective and brings out new abilities. The greater the darkness, the greater the light that is to be found within. This doesn’t mean that darkness is good, but if you experience it, then search for the positive. Use the new light to brighten your surroundings and make a difference. That said, we have all had enough darkness in our lives. Now it is time for Moshiach to come and for the darkness to end. Let the light shine uninterrupted in our lives!

Story Time The Holy Of Holies Of Cubits Of Halacha YOU KNOW THERE ARE TWO SOULS? The Alter Rebbe had a Chassid in Vilna who was very rich and had a son that did not go in the ways of his father; he was a frivolous and sensuous person. The father, who knew that after his passing nothing would remain of his wealth for long since his profligate son would waste it all, told his son that in Liozna he had a dear friend. If the son was in trouble, he should go to the friend who would do a big favor for him. So it was. All the money the son inherited from his father went to waste and he became a poor man. The son traveled to Liozna, thinking that his father’s friend was probably a rich man who would help him out. Upon arriving in Liozna, he discovered that the friend was the Alter Rebbe and yet he still went to see him. The Rebbe said to him, “Do you know that every Jew has two souls?” The son said, “Who says so?” The Alter Rebbe said, “It says so in the Shaarei Kedusha of Rabbi Chaim Vital.” The son asked again, “Who says so?” The Rebbe got upset and shouted at him, “Who are you speaking against?” The son fell to the ground in a fright and he was carried out of the room. He remained unconscious for a long time. Afterward, he went to ask forgiveness from the Alter Rebbe. He regretted his past and with guidance from the Alter Rebbe he did teshuva. (Shemuos V’Sippurim Vol. II p. 59)

My father said to him: “When the Beis HaMikdash stood, there were ten levels of holiness and the Holy of Holies was the most holy place. The High Priest would enter there only on Yom Kippur. After the Beis HaMikdash was destroyed, our Sages say that G-d has nothing in His world but the four cubits of halacha, and within those four cubits there are also ten levels of holiness. When a Rebbe says a maamar Chassidus, it is like the High Priest in the Holy of Holies and consequently there is no question at all.” I sat facing them and when my father finished he said to me, “Did you understand, Yosef Yitzchok?” and he lightly pinched my cheek. I said, “Yes, Father.”

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

8 chicken breasts, sliced in half or thinned

1. Cut your thinned chicken breast into strips, place in bowl, and dredge in flour.

6 eggs

2. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs.

2 teaspoons salt

3. In a separate bowl, add the three crumbs and spices.

2 teaspoons garlic powder

4. Add the dredged chicken strips in the bowl with whisked eggs.

1 teaspoon zaatar 1/2 teaspoon black pepper 1 cup Gefen Panko Crumbs 1 cup Gefen Bread Crumbs 1 cup Gefen Cornflake Crumbs 3/4 cup sesame seeds flour for coating oil for frying

5. And finally, lay the strips in the bread crumbs mixture, turn it over and press it into the breading to evenly coat. Lay on a piece of wax paper. 6. Heat a quarter inch of oil in a large frying pan over medium heat until hot and shimmering. Lay chicken strips in the pan. Cook the chicken for about two minutes. Turn the chicken and cook until equally brown on the other side and the chicken is cooked through, about two to three minutes more. Don’t overcrowd your pan. 7.Repeat with the remaining chicken strips. Transfer chicken to a paper towel-lined plate to drain before serving.
