Why We Need to Suffer By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz In this week’s Torah portion, G-d sends Moses to Pharaoh to tell him of the upcoming plague of wild beasts, and that the plague will not be in Goshen, where the Jews lived. Then G-d says: “I will place a distinction between My people and your people.” The word G-d uses for “distinction” here is f’dus, which actually means “redemption.” What message is G-d sending us? As Jews, we are gifted with a strong sense of justice; the idea of inequality bothers us to no end. We can mistakenly think that all people are the same. People are people. However, G-d knows differently. He chose the Jewish people and distinguished us from among all other nations. He wants us to be distinct, in the way we act, in the way we dress, in the way we speak, etc. G-d wants us to be a “light onto the nations,” and when we are, we lift the world to a higher moral level, which brings redemption. In Egypt, the Jewish people distinguished themselves in three ways: language, dress and names. Everywhere a Jew went, Egyptians knew that there walks a Jew. The way we acted made a difference, impacting our surroundings. Since we distinguished ourselves for G-d, He separated us for redemption from Egypt. As the Rebbe’s emissary in Temecula, Calif., I found that people were always happy and respected that I was observant. I also found that they were very let down when a Jewish person did something wrong. We are special, and the world knows it. We need to embrace it and distinguish ourselves for G-d. We need to be living examples to each other and a light onto the nations. If we do, we will once

again merit G-d’s redemption, the coming of Moshiach. May it happen soon! *** After G-d had sent Moses to tell the Jewish people that He would soon redeem them, and the suffering only got worse, we read G-d’s response to Moses´ outcry, “Why have You mistreated this people?” G-d responds, “I am HaVaYaH,” a name signifying the very essence of the divine. How does that answer Moses’ outcry? Great revelation comes through great suffering. The greater the toil, the greater the accomplishment. We are here to reveal G-d’s essence in the world. Essence is revealed only under enormous pressure, like diamonds from coal. When we left Egypt, we got a diamond: a connection to G-d. This is G-d’s reply to Moses. “I’m honing out a deeper connection with you, and that comes through suffering.” But that was but the tip of the iceberg. In marriage, at the beginning there is a powerful connection. However, over years of struggle and hardship, the couple forges a connection which is infinitely deeper. So it is about our connection with G-d. When we left Egypt, our bond was powerful. However, now that we have endured unimaginable hardship and suffering in this exile, two thousand years, imagine how incredible our connection has become. Soon, when Moshiach will come, we will experience the fruit of our labor. G-d will reveal His essence, and we will be one.

Story Time WHERE ARE THOSE FOUR CUBITS? NESHAMOS IN “FATCHEILES” The Rebbe Rayatz related: In Lubavitch there lived a butcher, an unlettered villager called Shalom Gershon. One day, the local shochet, R’ Shlomo Chaim, was unwell, and by that time I had learned that craft. The butcher therefore approached me and said, in his plain words, “Nu! I need a lot of stuff for tomorrow!”So I set out to the home of the shochet, to sharpen the knives. As I finished, I caught sight of the waiting butcher, who was reading Tehillim and crying. So I asked him, “Reb Shalom Gershon, why are you crying?” He explained himself: “How can I not cry, when I myself heard the maamar from the mouth of the Rebbe” – that is, my father – “and he said that souls are in shawls!” (My father’s words were “neshamos in Atzilus,” but what this good man made out of those words was “neshamos in fatcheiles [Yiddish for ‘shawls’]…”) Reb Shalom Gershon concluded: “So how can I not cry? Because if even holy neshamos find themselves wrapped in mere shawls, what will be with the likes of me…?” When I recounted this to my father, he responded with the concept cited above – that when an unlettered person hears a profound teaching, then even if he does not understand it, it nevertheless leaves an impact upon him in the [indirect and transcendent] mode of makkif, and he is elevated to a higher level. (Sefer HaSichos 5704 (English Ed.), First Seder Night Sec. 1) TO ME, SHE IS MISSING After the passing of the Rebbetzin, the Tzemach Tzedek was very unsettled. He did not want to say Chassidus and receive people for yechidus. To his sons he said: What are you lacking? You had a mother here, and now you have a mother in gan eden. To me, she is missing! The Chassidim said that since she was “malchus of Atzilus,” it was only

through her that the Rebbe had a connection to the lower worlds of Beria, Yetzira and Asiya. (L’shema Ozen p. 112) WHERE ONE FEELS G-DLINESS The Chassid, R’ Zev (Velvel) Vilenker, told that one time he passed through a room next to the Alter Rebbe’s room as the latter sat and learned. From that moment on he sensed tangibly that “there is nothing but Him,” and an impression of this remained with him for the rest of his life. The mashpia, R’ Shmuel Gronem, explained that this was because of the revelation of the Shechina that the Alter Rebbe had, which was just like in the Beis HaMikdash when the Jewish people would be oleh regel in order to prostrate themselves before Hashem and would see G-dliness. Then, they sensed tangibly how “there is nothing but Him and there is nothing else besides for Him.” One could sense this feeling when in the presence of the Alter Rebbe, but one needed to be a “vessel” to receive it. (Lemaan Yeidu p. 270) WHERE ARE THOSE FOUR CUBITS? The Tzemach Tzedek once refrained from receiving people for yechidus but one of the Chassidim dared to go in. The Rebbe expressed his surprise and he said: “When the Beis HaMikdash stood and Jews wanted to seek something from G-d, they went to the Beis HaMikdash. However, when the Bayis was destroyed, G-d has nothing in this world except the four cubits of halacha which are instead of the Beis HaMikdash. Where shall I find those four cubits of halacha if not in the Rebbe’s chamber?” The Tzemach Tzedek accepted this and received the Chassid for yechidus. (Otzar HaChassidim USSR p. 309)

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

2 onions, diced

1. In a large pot, sauté onions and garlic. Add carrot slices and diced red pepper. Add potato chunks and sauté for another eight to ten minutes.

2 cloves garlic or 2 cubes Gefen Frozen Garlic 8–9 large carrots, thinly sliced 1 red pepper, diced 1 potato, peeled and cut into chunks 4 cups vegetable broth or 4 cups water plus 3 and 1/2 teaspoons vegetable soup mix 4 cups water 1 and 1/4 cups milk or water salt and pepper, to taste 1/4 teaspoon dried ginger (optional)
