Beyond Speech

Plant Now, Beneﬁt Later By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz The haftarah for the portion of Shemot has one theme divided into three parts. The general theme is the blossoming of redemption. First, we go down into exile for a reason. Second, in the darkness of the exile is where we are able to accomplish the most, developing ourselves and the world for the ultimate redemption. Third, the gathering of the exiles is described, and how when Moshiach comes, we will reap the fruits of our labor in exile. (There are also hints on how to bring Moshiach, through showing love to our fellow Jews.) The connection to our Torah portion is that the Shemot begins with the descent of the Jewish people into Egypt. Then it tells of the hard labor and the amazing growth of the Jewish nation. Then, finally, comes the beginning of our redemption from Egypt, when G-d sent Moses to start the process of the Exodus. Another connection is in the first verse of the haftarah. The parshah begins, “And these are the names of the Children of Israel who came to Egypt.”1 The haftarah also begins, “Those who came, whom Jacob caused to take root, Israel budded and blossomed, and they filled the face of the Earth with fruit.” The parshah also tells us how the Jewish people multiplied. Both Jacob and Israel are names of the Jewish people. When it comes to taking root, it says Jacob, but by budding and blossoming, it says Israel. Why?

“Jacob” refers to the Jewish people when they interact with the physical world, which in the time of exile is a very dark place. It is symbolic of serving G-d out of “accepting the yoke” of His will, which is our main mode of service in exile. This form of service is not necessarily very meaningful, but it is the most powerful. It is compared to planting, which is hard, thankless work. Planting a small tasteless seed in the ground, where it is dark and cold. But it is there where this seed takes root and grows into a great tree. The transformation from a small seed to a large tree is exponentially great; the same is true about our service in exile. It is hard work—tasteless, cold and dark—but here is where our work takes root, and the transformation is well beyond our efforts. “Israel” refers to the Jewish people’s interaction with the spiritual and the G-dly, which is mainly in the time of Moshiach. It is symbolic of serving G-d out of deep appreciation and understanding. It is compared to budding and blossoming, and the growth of fruit. Above ground, in the light and warmth, the budding and blossoming is visible and beautiful, and the fruit is tasty and enjoyable. In the light and revelation of G-d in the era of Moshiach, we will have the pleasure of seeing the accomplishments of our actions and the fruits of our labor. All this will be possible only because of the seeds we planted in the exile. So our work now as Jacob, in the darkness of the exile, is what gives us the great pleasure as Israel, in the time of Moshiach.

Story Time TO PURIFY THE FLESH SO IT SEES G-DLINESS TO PURIFY THE FLESH SO IT SEES G-DLINESS At a Chassidishe farbrengen in Lubavitch on Chanuka 5610/1850, the main speakers were the famous Chassidim, R’ Isaac of Homil and R’ Pesach of Malastovka. R’ Pesach explained the idea of “bittul ha’yesh” at length. He explained how the body, of itself, is death and evil, and he concluded that a body without a soul is a smelly carcass. R’ Isaac said, “You’re right. That is the lowliness of the body that came to be through the descent of the sin of the Eitz HaDaas. However, the body of man in its core essence is a very lofty level. “The Chassid, R’ Avrohom of Smilian had yechidus with the Alter Rebbe in Liozna after preparing for a few months. The Rebbe said to him: It says (Iyov), ‘and from my flesh I see G-d’ - we need to scrub the flesh so it sees G-dliness.” R’ Isaac continued to explain: “Decades pass in purifying the flesh with the sweat of learning, the sweat of prayer, the tears of rectifying middos, with much service of the heart, much service of the mind, but ultimately, whether a year earlier or a year later, G-d has mercy and the ingrained bodily rust is removed, the flesh is rubbed and scrubbed, and one sees G-dliness. “What the Rebbe told R’ Avrohom, that in order to see G-dliness you need to scrub the flesh, is just a beginning. “This statement of the Rebbe is like what is written, ‘this is the gate to rise up’ - this is the gate through which one needs to enter. The work in scrubbing the flesh is one of the levels

by which one rises on the ladder of avoda. This though is only ‘standing on the ground,’ but through genuine avoda one can reach ‘and his head reaches the heavens.’” (Likutei Dibburim, vol. 2, Hebrew, p. 437) I LOVE MY WIFE A person who had yechidus with the Alter Rebbe was dressed and polished like a German. When the Chassidim saw he was taking a long time in yechidus, they put their ears to the door. They shuddered at what they heard. The man was talking about his wife’s beauty and then described his love for her and all the details of their life together. He was consulting the Rebbe since he found another woman more beautiful than her and he wanted to know whether he should divorce his wife in order to marry the other woman or should he stay with her. The Alter Rebbe said, “It’s not worthwhile since perhaps you will lose the first and won’t get the other one.” The Chassidim were flabbergasted that the Rebbe would spend that much time on talk like this. When the man left, the Alter Rebbe said, “This man was a great hidden tzaddik who told me all the levels of the Shechina he had attained. He wanted to rise higher but it would be impossible to attain a higher level without first descending from the present level, which is why he asked what he should do. I told him it’s not worthwhile because he might go down in level and not be able to ascend and lose what he had.” (Teshura Gluckowsky 5772)

3 pounds red skinned potatoes, scrubbed

1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

1/4 cup Tuscanini Light Olive Oil 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon paprika 4 to 6 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup chopped fresh dill

2. Quarter the potatoes lengthwise and toss with olive oil and spices. Place each wedge onto a parchment lined baking sheet, cut side down. 3. Roast until the potatoes are tender and crisp, 3045 minutes. 4. While hot, remove the potatoes to a bowl. Add the garlic and dill, then cover the bowl and let steam for five minutes. Uncover and serve.
