Anguish Yes, Fear No By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz

Sometimes, I feel that if only G-d would speak to me, as he did to Jacob, it would be so much easier to deal with the pain and suffering of living with ALS. But then I remind myself that everything in Torah is G-d talking to me. It’s not easy to see it that way, but it’s true. It takes effort and thought, but if you can put this in focus, you will find comfort in knowing that G-d is talking to you and He is always with you; you are Jacob. In Vayigash, we read of Jacob’s descent into the exile of Egypt. As he is about to exit the Holy Land, G-d tells Jacob: “Don’t be afraid to go down to Egypt, because I will make you into a great nation there. I am going down to Egypt with you . . . ” Rashi explains that Jacob was “anguished over leaving the Holy Land.” How could I lead my family away from the best place for them to become a nation, the place most conducive to be a Jew and to be close to G-d? How will we become G-d’s nation in a dark and distant exile? G-d tells him: “Don’t be afraid to go down to Egypt because I will make you into a great nation there. I am going down to Egypt with you . . . ” While G-d allays his fears about going down to Egypt, He does not even mention Jacob’s anguish over leaving Israel. Why not? Since this is G-d’s message to Jacob as he goes down to the first Jewish exile, there must be lessons here for every Jew on how

to deal with the exile. What are those lessons? In exile, one may feel that it is a lost cause trying to make a difference. G-d tells us that the opposite is the case. The fact that He puts us in a predicament means that this situation is most conducive to accomplish our mission, and it is here that we will be most effective and most successful. The key is not to be afraid of the situation. Don’t be afraid of the exile; embrace it and find how to use your predicament to bring even greater change. This is what G-d tells Jacob: “Don’t be afraid of going down to Egypt because I will make you into a great nation there.” Why shouldn’t you be afraid? Why will you succeed? Because I am going down with you. Now, if we succeed, there is the possibility to become comfortable and lose focus of our purpose. This is why G-d doesn’t mention Jacob’s anguish, as it is his anguish that will keep him focused on his essential purpose and bond with G-d. This anguish is the force behind our success. So we need both: first, not to be afraid, and second, the anguish. We need to realize that although we can succeed greatly in exile, it is not our place. We must cry out to G-d, asking that He send Moshiach and bring the exile to an end. May it happen soon! I want to thank my wife, Dina, for her help writing this article.

Story Time THE ‘SHUV’ IN LEARNING GEMARA THE PRAYER THAT UPROOTED KEFIRA In Romania there was a boy who studied a lot of sifrei chakira. As a result, he had many doubts and questions about faith until he decided to convert. One Shabbos morning, he went to the church to speak with a priest but as he walked down the street he saw a crowd and it was hard for him to pass through. Seeing a friend, he asked him what was going on. “Boor! Don’t you know that Rabbi Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev came to town and everyone is going to hear his holy prayer?” He forgot about his plan and joined the others in going to shul to hear the prayer of the tzaddik, but it was very crowded and it took a long time until he managed to get close to the shul. Upon arriving there, he heard the sweet voice of the tzaddik and a spirit of holiness and spiritual delight entered him. He had a strong desire to get close to the shul and he mustered all his strength until he got inside. The tzaddik was up to the bracha of “Ahavas Olam” before “V’Ha’er Eineinu” and said, “Master of the universe, you have this many angels” – and he began to enumerate how many tens of thousands of serafim and ofanim etc. there are. Then he concluded, “And they all serve You, and I too, Levi Yitzchok ben Sarah Sosha, want to serve You” And he called out with a fiery, impassioned sweet song, “V’ha’er Eineinu b’Sorasecha.” That young man was so affected that he let loose a river of tears with a broken heart and complete teshuva for his impure thoughts. As soon as the davening was over, the tzaddik went over to him, took his arm and seated him near him and ordered him not to move from him all day. From then on, he grew in his

(Migdal Oz, p. 268) MOVED BUT UNCHANGED The government demanded of the Tzemach Tzedek that at least one of his children learn in the government school, but the grandchildren did not want to. The Tzemach Tzedek asked his grandson, R’ Mordechai ben R’ Boruch Sholom his son, to attend the school. In exchange, he would learn Tanya with him when he returned every day. That’s what happened; the grandson went to school and when he returned, his grandfather learned Tanya with him every day. When they learned chapter fifty and reached the words, “yesh mispael chu’ v’yesh mispael chu’,” the Tzemach Tzedek said, “Mispael and yesh – one can experience emotional excitement from G-dliness and specifically then be a ‘yesh.’” The Rebbe repeated this several times and entered into such a state of spiritual ecstasy that he did not finish the chapter that day. (L’Shema Ozen p. 106) THE ‘SHUV’ IN LEARNING GEMARA The Rebbe Rashab would say a maamar every Friday night. One time, he did not feel well while saying the maamar and he went to his room. The Rebbe Rayatz went to see how his father was and saw him sitting and learning Gemara. The Rebbe explained to his son that after the “ratzo” while saying the maamar, the “shuv” was through learning Gemara. (Otzar HaChassidim - USSR p. 102)

The Alter Rebbe, whose Yartzeit is in the mounth of Teves, wrote a very special Sefer called the Tanya. Of course you know the Tanya. It’s so special and heilig that when you start learning the Alef Beis, we use a Tanya to teach us which letter is an Aleph and which letter is a Beis..

from his deep thinking state, and noticed that the Maharil was standing right next to him! On the desk were some papers, an ink jar, and a quill. The Alter Rebbe pointed to a word that he was writing and said to his brother: “This is the third week that I have been thinking whether I should write a Vov here, or not.”

The Rebbe tells us a story about the Alter Rebbe and his brother the Maharil. The story shows us how special each letter is in the Tanya and how careful the Alter Rebbe was in writing it.

Can you imagine? The Alter Rebbe spent three weeks thinking about one letter! That's how careful the Alter Rebbe was when writing the Tanya.

Once, when the Maharil walked into the Alter Rebbe’s study, he found his brother. the Alter Rebbe, sitting at his desk, thinking deeply. The Maharil waited quietly by the Alter Rebbe for a long time. At last, the Alter Rebbe stirred

The Alter Rebbe continued, explaining that every time he was going to write a letter that connects two words of the Tanya, like an extra Vov connecting two words, he first thought through the entire Tanya in his head before writing it down on the paper.

Kinderlach, this shows us how special the Tanya is. It's not a quickly written book, it's a heilige sefer. The Alter Rebbe thought deeply while writing every letter down to the smallest Vov.

When you get older, you`ll have the privilege to learn Tanya and understand it well, but right now when you are learning Tanya baal peh, take care and remember each word exactly, because each special letter was chosen with precision and care by the Alter Rebbe.

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

3 pounds red skinned potatoes, scrubbed

1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

1/4 cup Tuscanini Light Olive Oil 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 teaspoon paprika 4 to 6 cloves garlic, minced 1/4 cup chopped fresh dill

2. Quarter the potatoes lengthwise and toss with olive oil and spices. Place each wedge onto a parchment lined baking sheet, cut side down. 3. Roast until the potatoes are tender and crisp, 30-45 minutes. 4. While hot, remove the potatoes to a bowl. Add the garlic and dill, then cover the bowl and let steam for five minutes. Uncover and serve.
