Joseph’s Sons and Chanukah By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz

In the portion of Mikeitz, we read of the birth of Joseph’s two children, Manasseh and Ephraim. These names have meaning. Manasseh means “G-d made me forget all my hardships and all my father’s home.” Ephraim means “G-d made me fruitful in the land of my suffering.” Being in Egypt, Joseph was aware that he was put there to affect Egypt in a positive and G-dly way. But at the same time, he needed to insure that he would not lose his Jewish identity, which is a possible effect of mingling in a foreign culture. The names of his sons addressed these sentiments. Ephraim, to be fruitful in the land of my suffering, is involving himself and affecting Egypt. Manasseh is too connected to his past. Although he talks about forgetting, he is referring to the anguish he suffered, and not the G-dly way of life and the Torah he learned. What lesson can we take from Joseph? Why did Manasseh come first? How does this connect to Chanukah? Joseph sets the standard for all Jews at all times. We are Joseph! We are meant to uplift the world around us, by influencing our surroundings with Torah values. We know this is true, because G-d put us here in a physical world. The problem is that the lures of the

outside cultures are enticing, especially when we find success. This is why Manasseh comes first. In order to be effective and not be swept away, we must constantly develop and strengthen our essential bond and foundation in Judaism. This needs to come first, if we want to be successful in our mission to change the world in a positive way. During the story of Chanukah, many of the Jewish people succumbed to the licentious lifestyle of the Greeks. They lost their way, their sense of moral superiority, their connection to Torah and holiness. The Maccabees, outnumbered and weak, saved the day and saved Judaism. Not because they were great warriors, but because they were true to G-d and His Torah, and when you’re on G-d’s side, you never lose. Today, we find ourselves, again in a world of confusion and lies. As we witness the collapse of decency, morality and truth, we must strengthen our essential Jewish foundation. We must, like the Maccabees, stand strong for what we know to be the truth and the highest standard of living: the Torah way. May the light of Chanukah light up the world and may we soon dedicate our Holy Temple again, with the coming of Moshiach. May he come soon!

Story Time LOVE FOR A SON; LOVE FOR G-D TO GIVE AWAY YOUR “VERY” TO HASHEM After R’ Mendel Futerfas left the Soviet Union, he lived in London where he arranged packages of food and clothing for Jews left behind the Iron Curtain. He would raise funds for this purpose among the rich in London. Someone who knew the wealthy Jews went along with him to assist him. On one of their trips, they passed by the home of a rich man but the assistant did not stop there. R’ Mendel asked him why they weren’t stopping and he said, “I hate him very much!” R’ Mendel told him that when he learned in Tomchei Tmimim in Kremenchug, a maggid (itinerant preacher) once came to speak at one of the shuls in town. The talmidim, out of curiosity, went to hear him. The maggid spoke about the verse, “and you shall love the Lord, your G-d, with all your heart, and all your soul, and all your might.” He translated the word “me’od” into Yiddish as “ze’ir leeb” - loving very much. The maggid said the “me’od” needs to be given to G-d and he explained. It is permissible to love to eat, but not to love to eat a lot; to want a garment is permissible but not to want it a lot, because the “me’od” needs to be devoted to G-d – to want ‘very’ much to daven, and with ‘very’ great concentration, to love G-d ‘very’ much, as well as your fellow Jew. R’ Mendel concluded: It sometimes happens that a person stumbles in hating a fellow Jew but it’s not possible to hate “me’od,” very much. Only the yetzer hara, sins, and enemies of Israel should we hate with our entire “me’od.”

The Rebbe asked: Surely you know of what it says in the Torah that when Yaakov went down to Egypt to his son Yosef it says, “And he [Yosef] fell on the neck of Binyamin his brother and wept.” Rashi says, “ But Yaakov did not fall on the neck of Yosef and kiss him and our rabbis say that he was reciting the Shema.” This is most surprising. Yaakov had not seen Yosef his dear son for so many years. How was it possible that the first time they met he did not say anything to him and just recited the Shema?! The minister thought and said: It is surprising to me too. Perhaps you know the answer? The Rebbe said: The purpose is for man to have only love for G-dliness and this should be the most awesome, greatest love of all loves in the world. When Yaakov saw his son after so many years, he felt such a powerful love for his son in his soul and he remembered – the love ought to be greater for G-d. So he immediately began to recite the Shema and he meditated upon love for G-d and only then spoke with his son.

So too with me. When I saw you I felt a very great awe in my soul which is why I meditated on awe of G-d. Only I then rose from my place.

The Mitteler Rebbe focused on spreading chassidus to as many people as possible. He ordered that Chassidim who had the zechus to spend time in Lubavitch needed to teach what they heard to others. On their journeys home, they should stop for a day or two in the villages along the way, and repeat the mamorim they heard in Lubavitch.

Our Rebbe explained the Mitteler Rebbe’s expression: Have you ever bitten into a raw onion? You probably realized it was sharp and somewhat inedible. An onion on its own has a foul taste. Yet, onions can be quite flavorful when combined with other foods. When it is used as a spice, it adds a delicious taste.

One Chossid noticed that the people in the villages loved when he came. They understood everything he taught them. The Chossid recognized his talents for explaining Chassidus so clearly and felt quite proud of himself. “I am fulfilling the will of the Rebbe in such a magnificent way!” he thought. But this thought really bothered him. After all, being haughty and full of gaavah is not such a great midah, is it? The next time he traveled to the Mitteler Rebbe, the Chossid mentioned his problem during yechidus. “Perhaps I should stop repeating mamorim on my way home, since I become so full of pride?”

This Chossid may have felt like an onion, that his gaavah was creating an unpleasant taste. Still, he shouldn’t stop teaching Chassidus. Why should all the villages he visited lose out on learning Chassidus - just because of his pride? He can be an onion that adds flavor to others.

Even though haughtiness is not a good quality, we shouldn’t stop doing these mitzvos we’re good at. We can work on being a more humble person while still helping others. After all, why should a fellow yid miss out because of an onion?

Each one of us is good at different mitzvos. Some children find yidden and inspire them to do another mitzvah. Other children feel proud when they visit old age

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

2 yellow zucchini

1. Cut all the veggies into cubes. Season with spices, oil, vinegar and mustard and toss. Then add the jar of crushed tomatoes and mix.

2 green zucchini 1 small eggplant 2 purple onions 6 ounces shiitake mushrooms 2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 1 and 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 2 cloves garlic 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard or red wine vinegar 2-3 teaspoons sea salt 1/2 – 1 teaspoon pepper (more gives a nice kick if you like a peppery taste) 1 jar Tuscanini Crushed Tomatoes

2. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. 3. Bake covered for one hour. Then uncover for 20 minutes or until browned to your preference. 4. Serve warm or room temperature.
