Beyond Speech

It’s All About G-d By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz The way the Torah readings are set up, we always read about Joseph on Chanukah. Since everything in Torah is exact, we must ask: What does Joseph have to do with Chanukah? What lesson can we take from Joseph and Chanukah to help us deal with difficult times?

by his brothers, sold into slavery and thrown into jail on false charges. He was an orphan, alone, in a foreign land. Yet you don’t get the feeling that Joseph was depressed or down at all. He seems positive, able to rise above and succeed in every situation.

In the story of Chanukah, there were miraculous military victories. Strong armies were given into the hands of the weak, many into the hands of few, etc. But when the Talmud tells us what Chanukah is all about, it tells us only about the miracle of finding the pure oil in the Temple and that it burned for eight days. When Chanukah was established as a holiday, only one mitzvah was ordained: to light the lamps of the menorah.

How was he able to do that?

Why is there no mention of the great victories? And why isn’t there a mitzvah to have a meal, like on Purim? It is a matter of focus. In the story of Chanukah, the Greeks did not want to hurt us; they didn’t want to fight with us. What they wanted is to put ourselves before G-d. The only mitzvahs they took issue with were the ones that have no reason, other than G-d’s command. In other words, be Jewish because you enjoy it, not because G-d wants you to. We went to war to put G-d first, which in essence, is what being Jewish is all about. To focus on the war or on a meal would take away from the essential message of Chanukah. The most spiritual thing we have in this physical world is light, and lighting the menorah sets our focus on the spiritual and G-d. It is all about G-d. This now brings us to Joseph, who was despised

Joseph’s paradigm was the key to his positive outlook. Joseph saw himself as part of G-d’s plan; he saw every situation as part of the plan. When you perceive the world from this perspective, every difficulty, hardship and challenge is positive. To Joseph, it was all about G-d. Our perspective is the key to our happiness. When we only see ourselves, we are stuck with the difficulties the pain, the hurt, the anguish, the suffering, etc. However, when it is about G-d, every situation is seen as an opportunity. The crazier and stranger the situation, the more meaning can be found in it. Instead of being knocked down by the difficulty, you are uplifted. We are happiest and strongest when we are the way Jews are meant to be—focused on G-d. This idea has kept me positive. Ever since I was diagnosed with ALS, I felt that I was chosen by G-d for a special mission—to strengthen and lift the spirits of others. Though I pray every day to be healed, as long as I am in this predicament, I will use it to do what G-d wants. Through making our lives about G-d, we will merit the end to all difficulties and darkness. Like Joseph who became the viceroy of Egypt, we, too, will be on the top. Like the miracles of Chanukah, we will have the ultimate miracle, the coming of Moshiach. May he come soon!

Story Time Preferred Language Of The Animal Soul NOT FEELING THE “I” The Alter Rebbe demanded “ahava rabba” of his Chassidim. He demanded this not only from Chassidim on a high level of Torah and avoda, but even of the peddlers who made the rounds of the villages, that their thoughts be occupied with “ahava rabba” as they walked from village to village with a sack of merchandise on their shoulder. The Rebbe gave these peddlers the ability to think about “ahava rabba” which is expressed is setting oneself aside and nullifying one’s will before His will. Despite the fact that fulfilling the divine will is an expression of one’s “I,” still and all, it’s like the idea of “a son who exerts himself for his father and mother” which is also the idea of putting oneself aside. Even though “a son is the foot of his father,” he is still a son who is separate from his father. Still and all, when he’s a “son that exerts himself for his father,” then he doesn’t feel his “I.” (Sefer HaSichos 5603) SEARCH YOUR HEART

Chernigov, if it was permissible to translate the words of the davening even in those passages in which any additional words are considered an interruption. R’ Peretz asked him, “But why should you need to do that?” “My animal soul,” R’ Gershon Ber explained, “understands Yiddish better…” In practice, he used to translate every word into Yiddish while saying those passages in which it is permissible to make a verbal interruption – and sometimes also in those passages in which it is not permissible to make a verbal interruption. [While this is not l’chatchilah, there is halachic basis for this practice - see footnote in source]. (Sefer Hasichos 5701, Vayishlach, sec. 2) EXTENDING IT THROUGHOUT THE DAY At a farbrengen in 5708, the Rebbe said: There are people here who have the intention of giving up their lives when saying Shema “yichuda ila’a,” and they forget that this needs to be drawn down into their conduct throughout the day.

A man passed by the Rebbe at dollars and said: I came here to get holiness. The Rebbe said: Holiness is within your heart. Search properly and you will find it!

One time, when walking to bring joy to other shuls on Simchas Torah, R’ Alter Simchovitz walked with his student and on their way they passed Shaarei Tzedek hospital. R’ Alter said, “Here I lost my son, but when one meditates on Hashem’s Oneness (Havaya Echad) it’s entirely inconsequential.”

On Chanuka, we celebrate the miracles of these days, and thank Hashem by lighting the menora for eight days. Our Chachomim teach us that there are three ways to fulfill the mitzva of menora lighting: a basic way, a better way, and the best way. The highest and best level is called, “mehadrin min hamehadrin” - the most beautiful way. That is, that each family member lights an extra light each night of Chanuka on their own menora.

ANSWER - Imagine there are two very good friends; when one friend shows extra love toward the other, it arouses the other friend to respond in the same manner. The greater the love shown by the first friend, the more the other will reciprocate. In the description of the Chanuka event, Hashem performed miracles upon miracles, showing tremendous love toward the Yidden: They miraculously won the battle and then, upon entering the Beis HaMikdash, Hashem made another miracle when they discovered one jug of pure olive oil, and yet another ness - this small jug of oil lasted

This is the way the majority of Yidden light the menora nowadays. QUESTION - With all other mitzvos, we find that Yidden do them in many ways, from the basic to the beautiful - mehadrin. Why is it that by the mitzva of menora, 1) there is not just a beautiful – mehadrin – way to do the mitzva, but also the higher level of mehadrin min hamehadrin, and 2) that most Yidden do this mitzva in the most beautiful way when they suffice with doing other mitzvos on a basic level?

for eight days! Hashem showed His overwhelming love to the Yidden through these multiple miracles. How can we thank Hashem and show our love back to Him? We do this by fulfilling the mitzva of menora lighting not just in a basic way or even in a beautiful way, but in the most beautiful way possible - mehadrin min hamehadrin!

Once, there was a king who lived in Rome but who ruled many countries, including Eretz Yisroel. This king wasn’t so nice to the Yidden and made a lot of decrees against Eretz Yisroel. Did you guess who this King is yet? Yes, none other than... Antiochus. One time, the King called a family, Chana and her seven sons, to stand before him. He told the boys some senseless things: “Do not say Modeh Ani. Do not read Krias Shema by night and day. Do not kiss your tzitzis. I don’t want you to care about Hashem at all! Instead, bow down to this getchke of stone.” Do you think Chana’s sons listened? No way! They would not do what Antiochus wanted. They would not, Chas V'shalom, think a stone is better than Hashem. And they would never, ever stop doing mitzvos. Do you think Antiochus was happy with their answer? Not at all. These boys made a Kiddush Hashem. Just like these seven boys who were not scared of the biggest king around, we soldiers in Tzivos Hashem should also not listen to anyone trying to stop us from doing what’s right.

The seven little boys were told by the king himself, Antiochus, to serve getchkes. Do you think it is easy to not listen to a king? No way! People are usually scared in front of a king. Yet, the seven boys said, “We're not listening! We will only do what Hashem wants! We are yidden. We must say Modeh Ani, kiss our tzitzis and read Krias Shema.”

Sometimes our yetzer Horah can make us think, ”It’s not so important to really keep that mitzvah. No one else does it. The kids in your class will laugh at you if you do.” We should proudly answer, “No way! Just like Chana’s seven sons were not scared, we will do the same. We`ll make sure to only listen to Hashem and His mitzvos, always.”

Baked Chanukah Cake Donuts By Mikki Schaechter, Kosher.com

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

1/2 cup margarine

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray pans with baking spray.

2 and 1/2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour 1 and 1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon baking soda 3/4 teaspoon Manischewitz Kosher Salt 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/4 cup light brown sugar 2 eggs, room temperature 1 teaspoon Gefen Pure Vanilla Extract 1 cup Gefen Oat Milk or other non-dairy milk, room temperature icing sprinkles for decorating

2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, or in a large bowl with a hand mixer, beat margarine and sugars on high speed until light and fluffy, about three minutes. 3. Reduce mixer speed to medium; add eggs and vanilla, beating until combined, scraping down the sides of the bowl as needed. Reduce speed to low. Combine the flour, baking soda, salt, and baking powder, then add mixture in two batches, alternating with milk, and beat just until combined. 4. Transfer batter to a piping bag or a resealable plastic bag and snip a half-inch hole in one corner of bag. Divide mixture evenly between prepared pans. Bang pans several times on counter to release air bubbles. 5. Bake until tops of donuts spring back when lightly pressed, 15 minutes. Let cool 20 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool before decorating.
