Yaakov vs. Yisrael By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz

In this week’s Parshah, Vayishlach, we read how Jacob fights with an angel and wins. The angel tells him that he will be also called Israel, “because you struggled with [an angel of] G-d and with men, and prevailed.” Later in our Parshah, G-d tells Jacob that his name will now be Israel. He goes on to be called by both names, sometimes Israel, sometimes Jacob.

Our nation is known by both names: “the children of Israel” and “the House of Jacob.”

On a personal level, our lives are full of pain and struggles. It is there that we accomplish our primary purpose. Our struggles have meaning; our suffering is accomplishing amazing things. It is hard to see it this way. That is when we need to connect with G-d, to rise above and rejuvenate. We need to let go and allow Him to take over.

What is the significance of these names? If Israel is so special, why keep Jacob? As Jews, we have a constant inner struggle. On one hand, there is being a part of this physical world, with all the hardships and pleasures that go with it. On the other, there is our ability to rise above it all and be one with G-d. Our name Jacob, which means “heel,” is the part of us that deals with this reality. Jacob also means “to trick,” being clever, because it is our mission to transform this world into a G-dly place. Since this world is a world of lies and corruption, we must be clever, to not be taken in by its allure. Israel is our ability to rise above it all, even above the spiritual realms, which are also creations, and connect with our essence, our neshamah (soul), which is actually a part of G-d and not subject to the

While Israel sounds nice, it doesn’t effect the change we are meant to accomplish in the world. Jacob is the part of us that transform this world, which can be done only by taking part in it. Yet it is necessary for us to go to an Israel reality from time to time, to rejuvenate and remind ourselves of our purpose.

It is time for our struggles to end. May G-d send Moshiach and put an end to this dark exile. May it happen soon.

Story Time Why Does The Rebbe Need An Eraser? THERE IS NO SECULAR JEW Eretz Yisrael’s Chief Rabbi Yisrael Meir Lau related: When I had yechidus with the Rebbe, he spoke to me about the importance of how we view another Jew. The Rebbe strongly negated the use of the adjective “chiloni” (secular) to refer to a nonobservant Jew. He said: There is no such thing as a chiloni! If he is a Jew, G-d created him in a way of “and you will be for Me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation,” and this does not depend on him and his choosing. Just as when a Jew is born, he remains a Jew forever, no matter how he behaves, for “although he sinned – he is a Jew,” so too, every Jew, even though he sinned, cannot be called “chiloni.” He was and always remains a part of the “holy nation.” On that occasion, when R’ Lau used the term “kiruv rechokim” the Rebbe negated that and said: There is no distant Jew; a Jew is always close. (Parshiyos im ha’Rebbe, Devarim p. 43) WHO CAN BE A CHASSID? Professor David Weiss had a yechidus with the Rebbe to report on a visit to Russia. He related the following: “At the end of the audience, I was so profoundly impressed that I was moved 34

to say to the Rebbe, ‘I am not as exacting in my Torah observance as some others. I do pray three times a day, but not always with a minyan. And I am not always as careful about observing the commandments as the people who are your emissaries. But I would just like to know, ‘Who can call himself one of your Chassidim?’ “He responded, ‘It’s very simple … Somebody who can say at the end of the day that he has advanced a small step higher than he was at the beginning of the day, I would be happy to call that person a Chassid of mine.’” (Here’s My Story, Parshas Nasso 5778) WHY DOES THE REBBE NEED AN ERASER? A group of students visited the Rebbe and when they were told that the Shechina speaks from his throat one of them asked: Does the Rebbe never make a mistake? In yechidus, one of them asked: If the Rebbe never makes a mistake, why is there an eraser on the pencil? The Rebbe said: A Rebbe indeed does not err but today he is greater than yesterday and today he adds to what he wrote yesterday. (Sippurim m’Cheder ha’Rebbe p. 176)

WHAT’S YOUR NAME? Based on Likutei Sichos vol. 3 p. 795

On his way to greet Eisav, Yaakov met Eisav’s malach and fought with him. Ultimately, Yaakov overpowered the malach. The malach then changed Yaakov’s name to Yisroel, which means, “The one who won over the malach.” QUESTION - In Parshas Lech Lecha Avraham Avinu’s name was changed from Avram to Avraham. Regarding Avraham, it says that one is not allowed to use the old name Avram anymore. Regarding the name Yisroel, we find that the Torah still uses the name Yaakov. What is the reason for this difference? ANSWER - We continue using both names Yaakov and Yisroel, because each name symbolizes a different way of serving Hashem. Yaakov - The name Yaakov means to trick. Yaakov dressed in Eisav’s garments as a trick to receive Yitzchak’s brachos. In our avodas Hashem this refers to the times when we serve Hashem with the material things in this world; eating, drinking, and the rest of our daily routines. Seemingly, we are wearing “Eisav’s clothes” when we are involved in

gashmiyus, not Torah and mitzvos. When a Yid uses the gashmiyus for a mitzva, for example, he makes a bracha on food and then uses the energy from the food to learn Torah and do mitzvos, it is as if he is “tricking” the gashmiyus. He is using the gashmiyus for Hashem’s sake! Yisroel - The name Yisroel means to rule over the yetzer hara. This is when we serve Hashem with the material world without having to put in extra effort, but rather, our involvement in the material world itself is a mitzva. For example, when we eat on Shabbos and yom tov, we don’t need to eat in order to serve Hashem afterward. But rather, the eating itself is a mitzva. In these instances, we are not struggling with the gashmiyus, rather we are automatically ruling over the world - Yisroel! LESSON - In every situation, we can always find a way to make our yetzer tov the winner. Sometimes it may be more of a challenge than other times; but when we use the koach we get from both names of our forefather Yaakov and Yisroel – we will always be winners in Hashem’s army!

What a simcha! The Alter Rebbe just received the news that he will be released from jail. When asked where they should take him, the Alter Rebbe mentioned a certain chossid who lived nearby. The officers dropped the Alter Rebbe off at the requested address, but whoops! They took him to the wrong apartment. Instead of celebrating with his chassidim, the Alter Rebbe was now in the home of one of the yidden who caused the Alter Rebbe to be put in jail! The Alter Rebbe’s host took a good look at his unexpected guest. The leader of the chassidim ended up in his house! Placing a tea in front of the Alter Rebbe, the host began attacking him: "You think you're finished?! Let me tell you that you've now fallen into my hands. On the way down, they heard a voice screaming behind the locked apartment door. "You changed the Shabbos davening in the siddur! Why don't you like Na’aritzoch? Only some new tefilla called keser?!’’ The chassidim understood the Alter Rebbe was mistakenly taken to the wrong house. Firmly, they knocked on the door and entered the apartment. The Alter Rebbe was forced to listen to this man shouting insults for three hours! "Come Rebbe, let us go,” said one chossid, "let us get out of here.” The Alter Rebbe replied that he has to show respect to his host and stayed to finish his glass of tea. Only after did he go with his chassidim. As they were leaving, the Alter Rebbe told his chossid, "My entire time in prison wasn’t as painful as those three hours which I sat in the house of this man.” Why did the Alter Rebbe choose to stay longer just to drink his tea? That time was worse than the 53 days in prison! The Alter Rebbe could have gone out when the chassidim came..?

TheThe Alter Rebbe taught us an important way to behave. The host was not respectful to the Alter Rebbe. Even worse, he was proud of himself for answering back and fighting. Even such a sad man, who didn't behave like a mentch, still deserves ahavas yisroel. The Alter Rebbe stayed to drink his tea out of respect for his host.

Every creation of Hashem deserves respect. No matter what bad actions other people choose to do, we can still respect them just because they are a creation of Hashem. This is called tov labriyos, doing good to Hashem’s creation. This Yud Tes Kislev, we can learn to treat everyone kindly. Yes. Even the person who hurt your feelings. Or even the ones who the only good thing you can think of about them is that Hashem made them- that is more than enough of a reason.

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

2 tablespoons oil

1. Preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit.

1 onion, diced

2. Heat the oil in a skillet and sauté the onion and garlic until fragrant. Reduce heat to low and allow to cook until softened. Remove from heat and set aside.

2 cloves garlic, minced 1 and 1/2 teaspoons smoked paprika salt, to taste pepper, to taste

3. Meanwhile, mix the quinoa and kani in a large bowl. Add the sautéed onions, season with smoked paprika, salt and pepper, mix well and adjust seasoning if necessary. Stir in the eggs.

4. Use a medium cookie scoop to scoop mounds onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, then flatten slightly with the bottom of a lightly greased measuring cup or your fingers.
