Beyond Speech The Dove Always Finds Its Way Home By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz In the haftarah for Vayeitzei, G‑d rebukes the ten northern tribes for wavering in returning to G‑d. He rebukes them for worshipping idols, for their crooked business dealings, for claiming in arrogance that G‑d is unaware of their actions, and for being deceitful. Ultimately, G‑d won’t let them succeed in their wickedness. This is all alluding to Laban the Aramean, Jacob’s uncle (and father-in-law), who in our Parshah swindled him every which way. Yet for all Laban’s trickery and cunning, G‑d doesn’t allow him to succeed. The haftarah speaks of Jacob’s descent to Charan and how he worked to get his wives, who are mentioned in our Parshah. Sprinkled throughout the haftarah are the exodus from Egypt; allusions to our future redemption; and assurances that if we follow on G‑d’s path, trusting in Him and keeping the Torah and mitzvos, He will help us succeed. Similarly, in the Parshah, Jacob—with G‑d’s help—succeeds in Charan, coming out with great wealth and a beautiful family. What lessons are hidden here for us? What are we meant to take away from the haftarah and the Parshah? The story of Jacob going down to Charan is the story of the Jewish people going into exile. It is also the story of the neshamah (soul) coming into the body. There are two types of exile. The first is an exile of plenty, where we are free and lack nothing. However, because of this abundance, we follow our desires, falling lower and lower. When this happens, our holy energy, which is meant to nourish the good and holy forces in the world, end up feeding and energizing the negative

forces. This is symbolized by the Assyrian exile, in which we enjoyed relative freedom. Then there is the exile of suffering, in which we feel stuck, unable to get out and do the simplest of things. Because of the suffering and oppression, our thoughts and abilities become constricted and obstructed. In other words we are stuck in our tzores. This is symbolized by the exile in Mitzrayim (Egypt), which means “constraints,” and where we were in servitude. To this the haftarah says that when Moshiach comes, “He will roar like a lion… They will hurry like a bird from Egypt, and like a dove from Assyria, and I will settle them in their homes, says G‑d.”What is the lion’s roar? That is the sound of the shofar that G‑d will sound when Moshiach comes. Why does He use the metaphor of a bird and a dove? Because no matter how far they stray from their nest, these birds always find their way back home. The same is true about the Jewish people. No matter which kind of exile, or how far we stray, we will find our way back home. Now the haftarah says, “Like a merchant who has deceitful scales in his hand.”This is the neshamah, which when it was above was filled with silver and gold, which means love and awe of G‑d. But like a merchant who spends all his silver and gold just to make a profit, so is the neshamah willing to give up everything— descend to this lowly world, enter the body and do everything to affect the body—just for the gain it will attain through the mitzvahs that the body will do. May we each get closer to G‑d through teshuvah, and may our precious mitzvahs finally tip the scales and usher in the redemption. May it happen soon.

Story Time PITY ON RUCHNIYUS BETTER TO CRY OVER YOU At a farbrengen with elder Chassidim, one of the Chassidim complained that he was in doubt about whether he fulfilled his obligation toward heaven. The Mittler Rebbe said, “Why should you cry about the pity on G-d because of the lack in your shleimus? Better to cry about the pity on you for the lack of avoda.” The gaon and Chassid, R’ Isaac of Homil said about this: These words affected that man and other Chassidim in a radical way. They felt the light of truth that Chassidus demands and which provides those Chassidim who seek it, when doing avoda. (Igros Kodesh Admor Rayatz vol. 13, p. 484)

of him as he lay asleep, and told the Rebbe Rashab that the child’s radiant appearance indicated a purity of thought. The Rebbe Rashab was strongly moved to give his son a kiss. At that moment, however, it occurred to him that in the Beis HaMikdash people brought not only animal offerings, but also silver and gold for the upkeep of the House. He thereupon decided to exchange the kiss for a maamar of Chassidus, and wrote the maamar which begins with the words, Mah Rabu Maasecha. In the year 5652 [1892] he gave the manuscript to his son as a gift, and said, “This is a Chassidic kiss; one day I’ll tell you about it.” Four years later he told him the whole story.

A CHASSIDISHE KISS In the year 5644 (1884), when the Rebbe [Rayatz] was a child of four, his father the Rebbe Rashab lived in an apartment of two rooms. One room served as the bedroom, and in the other, he was once studying together with the eminent Chassid, R’ Yaakov Mordechai Bespalov. In this room stood the cot of the Rebbe. He was a beautiful child, and his face was luminous. Late that night, as they were studying, R’ Yaakov Mordechai caught sight

In Parshas Vayeitzei we learn that Yaakov traveled to Charan. While there, he married Rochel and Leah and raised the shevatim. Our Chachomim tell us that the four letters of the month Iyar stand for, ‫אברהם יצחק יעקב רחל‬. QUESTION - Why is Rochel selected from among the four Imahos to be the only one included with the Avos? ANSWER - Rochel had a very special mida which was so unique that she deserved to be listed together with the Avos. What was this mida? The Midrash tells us the following story: When the Yidden were sent into golus, the Avos and Imahos begged Hashem for mercy that the Yidden should be saved from golus. Each of the Avos and Imahos davened using their own unique tefilla. When Rochel davened, she said, “Hashem, when Yaakov was meant to marry me, my father Lavan tricked Yaakov and gave him my sister Leah

instead of me. Not only was I not jealous of Leah, but I even gave her the secret signs Yaakov gave me, so that she would not be embarrassed! “Hashem! If I, a human being, was ready to forgive my sister for something so important to me, You, Master of the universe, should surely not be upset and forgive Your children, the Yidden, for the sins they have done!” Hashem answered Rochel, “You are right! It will be in your merit Rochel, that I will bring the Yidden back to Eretz Yisroel!” The Avos are the leaders of the Yidden since they led and cared for the entire Yiddishe nation. Rochel too showed care and love for the entire Bnei Yisroel, and for this reason, she was chosen to be included together with the Avos! We daven to Hashem that in the zchus of Rochel Imeinu, we should be redeemed from this long golus, with the coming of Moshiach now!

Did you ever want something very badly? I’m sure many of you kinderlach had things you wanted, like a cookie hiding on a top shelf, or a prize you had to earn. You might have even tried climbing high to try and reach the cookie, or doing super mitzvos to fill in your chart quickly.

The Mitteler Rebbe also wanted something very strongly and would try every trick possible in order to get what he wanted. Sounds familiar? The Mitteler Rebbe didn't want toys or cookies though. He wanted something very precious and heilig. The Mitteler Rebbe desired to hear chassidus from the Alter Rebbe. He would do anything just to hear one more precious maamer or chassidus. For example, asking great chassidim to request a maamer. And sometimes, he would even ask his sister, Rebbetzin Freida.

One Shabbos, the Mitteler Rebbe wanted to hear the explanation in chassidus on the clothing of the kohen. He asked his sister Freida to request it, and she agreed. The Mitteler Rebbe quickly hid under the bed, so he could listen in. When the Alter Rebbe arrived for the weekly, private maamer, Rebbetzin Freida made her request. The Alter Rebbe agreed and began speaking about the different clothing the kohen wore.

Rebbetzin Freida was a very special woman. Often, the Alter Rebbe would say private maamorim just for her. The Mitteler Rebbe would hide in the room

The Alter Rebbe was almost finished and the Mitteler Rebbe realized that one item was skipped. The Alter Rebbe hadn’t mentioned the Avnet yet, the belt. Quickly, the Mitteler Rebbe swiped his gartel at his sister’s feet, hinting that she should ask the Alter Rebbe about it.

PREPARATION

Honey Cake

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

1 box Duncan Hines Spice Cake mix

2. Mix the ingredients together in the bowl of a mixer or by hand, until everything is incorporated.

3 eggs 1 cup water or cooled brewed coffee 1/3 cup oil 3/4 cup Gefen Honey Apple Cider Icing 1 cup Gefen Confectioners’ Sugar 1 tablespoon melted margarine 1 and 1/2 to 3 tablespoons apple cider or apple juice 1 teaspoon apple pie spice

3. Spray a bundt pan well with cooking spray and immediately transfer the batter to the pan. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the cake comes out clean. 4. Cool for 10 to 15 minutes, then loosen the edges with a knife. Invert onto a large plate or cake dome. 5. Cool completely before icing (see below). 6. Combine all the icing ingredients in a bowl. Start by adding in one and a half tablespoons of cider or juice and add up to three tablespoons as needed. Pour over the cooled cake.
