Beyond Speech Solidification of Our Dynasty By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz The haftarah for Chayei Sarah is the beginning of first chapter of the book of Kings. It tells us how “King David became old, he came with his days.” In our parshah, we read that “Abraham became old, he came with his days.” This is the first connection between the haftarah and the parshah. To “come with days” means that all a person’s days were full and accounted for. How does the rest of the haftarah connect with the parshah? The haftarah tells us that when David was at advanced age, his eldest living—and extremely handsome and spoiled—son Adoniyahu sought to claim David’s throne, knowing that his younger brother, Solomon, was meant to be king after David. With the guidance of the prophet Nathan, Solomon’s mother, Bathsheba, came to David and let him know what was happening. David reassured her, reiterating the promise he made earlier, that her son Solomon would reign after him. She bowed and prostrated before the king and said, “May my master King David live forever!” Here, we find another similarity between the haftarah and the parshah. In the parshah, Abraham makes his younger son, Isaac, his sole heir, just as King David made Solomon, his younger son, the heir to his throne. Our parshah continues to tell us of how Abraham gave Isaac everything, making him his heir in his lifetime. It also tells us what happened after Abraham died, that G-d blessed Isaac, just as He blessed Abraham. On the other hand, the prevailing custom is to end the haftorah after King David’s promise to Bathsheba, not continuing on to the verses that

tell us how he had Solomon anointed as king during his lifetime and how Solomon sat on the throne after his father’s passing. It would make sense to continue reading on, being that that the events parallel the events of the parshah so closely. Why don’t we continue? The law is that the royal Davidic dynasty (carried through Solomon and his children) is everlasting. Moshiach will be heir to the throne of King David, tracing his lineage through Solomon. Until Solomon became king, the Davidic dynasty was not solidified. The heirs to Solomon’s throne were intrinsically royal and did not need to be anointed. (Sometimes, they would be anointed just to clarify who was king in case of dispute.) The Jewish dynasty started with Abraham, but must go through Isaac and his son, Jacob. Everyone who comes from Abraham through Isaac and Jacob is intrinsically Jewish. Since the Jewish dynasty would not be solidified until Jacob comes into the picture, which happens in the next parshah, the haftarah stops before the Davidic dynasty is solidified. Now we have another reason we read this haftarah. The establishment of the Davidic dynasty is the final solidification of the Jewish nation. Before the Jewish people had a king, they were not unified. It was the appointment of David that unified the Jewish people under one everlasting rulership. So our haftarah is the completion of the events of the parshah. May the events that began in our parshah and continued in the haftarah come to the ultimate completion, when our Davidic king, Moshiach, will ascend the throne.

Story Time NOT A MAVEN IN LOVE AN URGE FOR G-DLINESS OR FOR AN ALCHOLOIC BEVERAGE? The Alter Rebbe said: A Jewish wagon driver is on the road and he passes an inn where they sell alcoholic beverages. He gets off the wagon and asks the innkeeper for a drink. The truth is that this is a great spiritual descent for him, because the urge for alcohol comes from there being a G-dly soul in him which longs for G-dliness. However, for this wagon driver, instead of the urge of the G-dly soul for G-dliness, the urge is used for liquor. (Reshimos Devarim p. 100) GOOD FOR ATZMUS AND GOOD FOR ME When R’ Zalman Naimark heard the maamar, “Kol Ha’ne’heneh” from the Rebbe Rashab he said: “With You I desired nothing ... I have no need for Moshiach… My desire is now to be subsumed within Atzmus and if that were to be so, it would be good for both of us, good for Atzmus and good for me.” (Reshimas HaYoman p. 207) NOT A MAVEN IN LOVE The mashpia, R’ Chatshe Feigin was a “baal mochin” and the Rebbe Rayatz said, “You are a sichli” (intellectual).

The Rebbe once said to him: When you learn Chassidus about love, you don’t understand what it’s talking about, for a simple person loves an apple and therefore, he understands what love is. And a Rebbe has a love for G-dliness. But you, you have neither. (Otzar HaChassidim Bris HaMoatzos p. 185) BEAT HIM WITH A NOTHING A Chassid went to the Tzemach Tzedek and complained about someone who did not return a loan to him. According to the borrower, since Chassidus teaches that the world and all it contains is “nothing,” therefore, there is no world and no money. The Rebbe told him: Take this “nothing” and stretch him out on a “nothing” and beat him a few “nothings” with a thick “nothing” until he pays his debt! (Otzar Pisgamei Chabad vol. 2 p. 260) BE A FISH! At a Simchas Torah farbrengen, the Rebbe Rashab explained how everything physical is G-dliness. He pointed at a bowl of fish and said: You think that’s a fish? It’s not a fish. It’s the word of G-d in it that compels it and says to it again and again: Be a fish! (Toras Sholom p. 3)

A LIGHT UNTO THE WORLD Based on Toras Menachem 5745 p. 357

In Parshas Chayei Sara we learn about three special miracles that happened in the merit of Sara Imeinu (and later in the merit of Rivka Imeinu.) One of the miracles was that the candles that she would light before Shabbos would stay lit from one Friday until the next, when she would light them again. QUESTION - If Hashem could make a miracle that the flames should burn a whole week, why didn’t He just make one continuous miracle that they should burn forever? Why was it necessary for Sara to relight the candles again every week? ANSWER - Sara Imeinu was a truly righteous woman who served Hashem to the best of her ability. With every mitzva she did she brought down kedusha and spiritual light into this world. After a full week of

performing mitzvos, Sara reached such a high level of kedusha, even greater than the week before. Hashem therefore put out her candles at the end of the week, making it possible for her to light new candles befitting her new level of kedusha, thereby bringing a whole new light to this world. LESSON - The same is true with every Yiddishe girl who lights Shabbos candles. As a descendant of Sara Imeinu, this girl’s candle too has infinite spiritual light that can last forever! (Although we can’t see this unlimited light physically, the light is there, and when Moshiach comes we will actually see how it lasts forever.) And here too, Hashem – so to speak – puts out this spiritual light by the end of the week, making it possible for the Yiddishe girl to bring a whole new light to the world, after a full week of doing so many mitzvos!

Who Guards the City?

Rabbi Yehuda Hanassi, also called Rebbi, once sent his students Reb Ami and Reb Asi around from town to town to help establish places for Yiddishe kinderlach to learn Torah. One time, arriving at a Jewish city, Reb Ami and Reb Asi met with the leaders of the town. “Where are your Neturei Karta, the Guards of the City?” they asked. The town leaders presented the soldiers who guarded the city. Reb Ami and Reb Asi did not approve of this answer. “They are the Neturei Karta?!” they exclaimed. “No, these soldiers are not the guards of your city. Who are the real protectors?” they asked

rhetorically. “The true guards of a city are the teachers of Yiddishe kinderlach who teach Chumash and Mishnayos.” The town heads weren't wrong; the trained soldiers brandishing their weapons were there to protect the city. So why did Reb Ami and Reb Asi correct their answer? Reb Ami and Reb Asi wanted to remind them of where the soldiers get their power to protect - not from their weapons, nor are they strong just because of their training. The soldiers have power when Yiddishe kinderlach are taught Chumash and Mishnayos. When the soldiers realize that Torah learning comes first, they have the strength to keep the city safe..

Pistachio-Crusted Honey Mustard Salmon By Rivky Kleiman, Kosher.com

30 Minutes DURATION

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

6 1- and 1/4-in. salmon fillets

1. Preheat oven to 375°F.

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

2. Whisk oil, honey, mustard and lemon in a medium-sized bowl and set aside.

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon paprika 1/4 cup Gefen Canola Oil 2 tablespoons Gefen Honey plus extra for drizzling 2 tablespoons yellow mustard 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1/2 cup seasoned Chef Jeff Panko Crumbs 1/2 cup shelled pistachio nuts Yatir Viogier

3. Combine pistachios and Panko crumbs in a large Ziploc bag. Crush mixture with a rolling pin. 4. Rinse and pat the salmon fillets dry. Season with spices, then toss the salmon in the honeymustard mixture. 5. Place one fillet at a time into the crumb mixture. Shake well until completely coated. Lay on a Gefen Parchment-lined cookie sheet. 6. Lightly drizzle honey over the coated salmon. 7. Bake uncovered 20 minutes.
