Beyond Speech The Barren Woman and the Waters of Noah By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz This week’s haftarah is read twice: once with on Parshat Noach and then again as the fifth haftorah of consolation on the week of Ki Teitzei. The haftorah has a double theme. First, that when Moshiach comes, things will be so good that we will forget the hardships of the exile. Second, that the redemption will be final, never to be followed by another exile. The haftarah begins: “Sing, barren one who has not given birth.”Who is the “barren one”? The simple explanation is that G-d is talking to the city of Jerusalem, which feels like a barren woman, bereft of children. Although she had been desolate during this long exile, G-d tells her to sing—as now that Moshiach is here, her streets are once again filled with her children, the Jewish people. She doesn’t feel barren any more. On a deeper level, Hashem is talking to those Jews who claim they are barren and have not given birth to Him. Meaning, he has totally disassociated himself from the Jewish nation. G-d is saying that even He will sing a “new song”—the song we will sing when Moshiach comes. The revelation will be so great that we will break out in song, just as we did at the splitting of the sea. Every Jewish person will be included, even one who is “barren” of mitzvahs and in the darkest place. The revelation and transformation will be so great that he, too, will break out into song. The exile will then seem as a fleeting dream, as the haftorah says, “for a brief moment I forsook you.”We read in Tehillim (Psalms), when G-d returns the exiles of Zion, we will say that “we

will have been as dreamers.” A dream feels real, but when you wake up, it fades away. This will be because, as the next verse continues: “With a little wrath, I hid my face from you for a moment, but with everlasting kindness, I will have compassion on you . . . ” When Moshiach comes, it will be so good, that the exile will feel like a brief moment. Now the haftorah says: “Like the waters of Noach this is to me. Just as I swore to never again cover the earth with the waters of Noach, so have I sworn not to be wrathful with you and not to rebuke you.” This verse is self-explanatory, except that G-d calls the flood “the waters of Noach.” Why? Because the word “Noach” is like the word nachat (“satisfaction”), indicating that it is positive because it changed the world for good. The same is true about this exile. When Moshiach comes, we will see how everything we went through in this exile directly made the world ready for Moshiach. The reading concludes, that when Moshiach comes “ . . . My kindness will never depart from you, and my covenant of peace will never falter.” Like bookends, this haftorah is read before and after the holiday season, and it sets the tone for the whole year because bringing Moshiach is at the core of our mission as the Jewish people. Like beacons of light, it is read at the beginning and the end of the year to remind us that though our work is difficult and the exile dark, what we are accomplishing is tremendous and our reward is even greater. Perhaps it is your effort, your mitzvah, which will finally tip the scale and bring Moshiach. May he come soon.

Story Time THE SUPERNAL WILL SAYS NOT TO FAST A FIRE IS NOT BURNED BY FIRE During the nesius of the Tzemach Tzedek, his grandchildren, Rashab (Shalom DovBer) and his brother Raza (Zalman Aharon), would see Chassidim coming from all over the world to receive his blessing. As they played, they played Rebbe-Chassid. Raza was the Rebbe in the game and he put on a serious demeanor and sat at the head of the table. Rashab was the Chassid who came to him for a bracha. Rashab asked why the Rebbe gives brachos. The “Rebbe” answered: G-d is a ‘consuming fire’ and a Jew is like G-d so he too is a ‘consuming fire.’ Rashab asked: Then how did I touch your hand and not get burned? Raza said: Burning occurs only when fire touches something that is not fire, but when fire touches fire, there is no burning. When one Jew touches another, he is not burned. (Hisvaaduyos 5742, Vol. 1, p. 313) A FIERY CHASSID The Alter Rebbe once dispatched one of his disciples, R. Aharon of Strashelye, to liaise between the misnagdim and the Chassidim in a certain town. Those misnagdim were of the placid and G-d-fearing kind, whose intentions were directed for the sake of Heaven. They asked R’ Aharon: “What is a Chassid?” R’ Aharon answered: “A Chassid is someone whose interior is a fiery flame, because he thirsts

for Elokus, which is likened to fire, as in the phrase, ‘for the L-rd your G-d is an allconsuming fire.’ Externally, at the same time, he is deliberate. That is the artless spiritual personality of a Chassid.” (Sefer HaSichos 5704 (English ed.), 12 Tammuz, Ch. 13) THE SUPERNAL WILL SAYS NOT TO FAST Rabbi Avrohom Landau of Zembin was sick before he passed away and the doctor forbade him to fast on Yom Kippur. His talmid, the mashpia, R’ Shmuel Gronem, went to visit him on Erev Yom Kippur and R’ Avrohom told him that the doctor understood disease but did he have understanding and feeling for Yom Kippur. He said that since R’ Shmuel surely had a feeling for what Yom Kippur is, and he knew what the doctor said, his question was: Should he fast on Yom Kippur? R’ Shmuel said that it is known that the Maggid of Mezritch did not fast on several Yom Kippurs because of his weakness. “What difference does it make? This is also the supernal will. The Torah that says to fast on Yom Kippur is the same Torah which says that a sick person cannot fast, and by not fasting he is also fulfilling the supernal will!” R’ Avrohom accepted this and did not fast. He said it was a punishment for him since as a rav he was stringent when it came to questions about Yom Kippur. He said that if G-d helped him and he recovered, he would no longer be stringent with these questions.

King Alexander the Great successfully conquered most of the world. One day, some of his subjects from Africa appeared before him: “Your Royal Highness. You rule so many beautiful lands and countries. You are so mighty and just. Certainly, your royal highness, you will fix a great mistake that’s happening in your kingdom. The Land of Israel, also known as Canaan, which we currently share with the Jews, really belongs to us! We even have proof. It says in the Jewish Torah, ‘The land of Canaan and its borders’. We, the Africans, come from Canaan. So the land of Canaan, is rightfully ours!” “Is that so?” thought Alexander the Great “Let the Jews send a messenger to give me their answer. If they cannot, the land will belong to you.” What were the Yidden to do? How should they answer this claim? Everyone was anxious, until a man named Gevia ben Pesisa stood up: “Rabbosai, I will debate the people from the land of Africa.”

“Gevia? You?” the Yidden were surprised. “Yes” said Gevia. “If they win, you can all say, “What’s the big deal that they won? They beat a simple, simple Yid. Does a slave own anything?” “N..n...nooooo” answered the Africans and Gevia continued “Exactly! Anything a slave has belongs to his master. Since you come from Canaan, you can’t own the land of Canaan. Also, we Jews come from Canaan’s uncle Shem.

Grandma’s Stuffed Cabbage By Kosher.com

INGREDIENTS

PREPARATION

2 pounds of chopped meat

Prepare the Meat

1 big onion

1. Sauté the onion until translucent.

2. Mix the onion in the chopped meat.

2 tablespoons of pepper

3. Add salt and pepper to taste.

4. Put a little bit of oats on the meat mixture.

Prepare the Cabbage

1 big cabbage

1. Boil the cabbage.

1 teaspoon of salt

2. Wait until it cools and then take off the leaves. 3. Put the meat in the leaf and roll it. 4. Add salt and pepper to taste Prepare the Sauce 1. Put the leaves in the sauce. 2. Add the barley and the bones. 3. Cook it on slow for two or three hours.
