Beyond Speech On the Haftarah: The Purpose of Creation By Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz The haftarah1 for parshat Bereishit is from the book of Isaiah. The Sefaradic and Chabad custom is to conclude at the end of chapter 22, while the Ashkenazic custom is to continue to chapter 23. The Lubavitcher Rebbe had a unique personal custom that his father-in-law, the Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, instructed him to follow, but not as a rule for the community. In a regular year, he would conclude at the end of chapter 22 and in a Jewish leap year, he would continue on to chapter 23.2 (I don't know the reason for this. If anyone does, please share it in the comments section below.) I will be using both chapters as the basis of this essay. There are several reasons we read this haftarah on shabbat parshat Bereishit. First, because it starts with, “So says the Almighty G-d, who created Heavens ... who laid out the earth...”3 which is similar to our parshah, which speaks of the creation of the heavens and the earth. However, if this were the only reason, we would stop after the first verse. There has to be more. We must look deeper. The haftarah shares with us the reason for creation. The haftarah is all about Moshiach. It speaks about learning Torah, doing mitzvahs, “G-d wants ... him to make Torah great and to strengthen it.”4 It also speaks about the Jewish people, how the world will realize that the Jewish way of life is the correct approach and G-d's disappointment with us Jews for not doing our job well. Despite all that, He also reminds us that he is always with us, through all the hardships, saying, “You are My witnesses ... My servant I have chosen.”5 What is the connection between all these things: creation, Moshiach, Torah, mitzvahs and the Jewish people? The reason why G-d created this world is because

He has a divine desire to dwell openly in this world. This is only possible through our efforts in learning Torah and doing mitzvot. This is what the Jewish mission is all about. We were not just chosen because of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Rather, we are part of G-d's plan from the very beginning. G-d created an unfinished world, and made us His partners in creation, to complete it of our own free will. G-d gave us special souls that are actually a part of Him. These souls are what enables us to bring out the potential hidden in creation. He gave us Torah and mitzvot, with which to accomplish this mission. Every mitzvah is done with physical objects, in a specific time and place. When you do a mitzvah, you transform the physical into holiness. Even when doing everyday activities, like working, eating, exercising, etc., if you are doing them to support your life of Torah, they too become holy and transformative actions. When our work is done, the purpose of creation will be realized, the world will be an open dwelling for G-d and by definition, Moshiach will be here. Now you can see that everything has a purpose and how it all fits together. The world, the Torah, and the Jewish people, are parts of a puzzle. Together, they complete G-d's desire which is the coming of Moshiach. This is why we read this on shabbat Bereishit, because as we start the Torah from the beginning, its purpose must be made clear. May we soon see the prophecies in this haftarah come true. May we witness the culmination of our transformative work, G-d's open revelation with the coming of Moshiach. May it happen soon.

Story Time THEY WERE UNABLE TO PRAY WITH HIM BEAT HIM WITH A NOTHING A Chassid went to the Tzemach Tzedek and complained about someone who did not return a loan to him. According to the borrower, since Chassidus teaches that the world and all it contains is “nothing,” therefore, there is no world and no money. The Rebbe told him: Take this “nothing” and stretch him out on a “nothing” and beat him a few “nothings” with a thick “nothing” until he pays his debt! (Otzar Pisgamei Chabad vol. 2 p. 260) THEY WERE UNABLE TO PRAY WITH HIM They said about Reb Chaim Shneur Zalman of Liadi, the son of the Tzemach Tzedek, that he had ahava b’taanugim. When his father passed away, they could not daven with him in a minyan because as soon as he began to daven he would sing and dance and forget which world he was in, until he recovered and began davening again. (Shemuos V’Sippurim, vol. 2, p. 119) The Purpose of Love The Rebbe Rayatz writes in letter: The basic idea of the first to invent the steam engine — which with its great power and prowess brings great practical benefit — was creating tools to receive the powerful power of steam, lead it through pipes and harness its excited nature to practical uses.

After inventing various tools and mechanisms to “collect” the steam, limit it and contain it, he invented ways how the steam can be used to pull a cart, or mill grain into flour. The application of this in avoda does not require explanation, and each and every one can find it within himself, but must put it to use. The end of everything and its beginning is simple: all forms of excitement and passion must be contained in “tubes” and “pipes” which, with Hashem’s help, can bring actual benefit in setting times for Torah study, in arousing good middos, in the strengthening the ways of Chassidus and Chassidim with a warm and illuminated davening, saying Kerias Shema al Hamita with pleasure, and doing a favor for a fellow Jew materially and spiritually. (Igros Kodesh of the Rebbe Rayatz Vol. 4 p. 293) THE LUNG IS CREATED EVERY DAY The mashpia, R’ Alter Simchovitz was sick with tuberculosis and suffered greatly. As he lay in bed, he spoke to his students about what he was meditating on: Master of the universe, You constantly bring the world into existence. Therefore, just because you created a sick lung yesterday, You do so again at every single moment?! What he said made a strong impression on his students who saw how he really sensed the idea of the renewal of creation. (Otzar HaChassidim Eretz HaKodesh p. 49)

THREE SHORT HOURS Based on Likutei Sichos vol. 3 p. 747
On the sixth day of creation, Hashem created Adam HoRishon and placed him in Gan Eden. Hashem commanded Adam, “You may eat any fruits of the garden, with the exception of the fruits of the Eitz HaDaas.” Unfortunately, Adam ate from the Eitz HaDaas. As a result, he was sent from Gan Eden, and Hashem punished him along with all his descendants. The Midrash tells us that Adam was only forbidden to eat from the Eitz HaDaas for three hours, after which, he would be allowed to eat from this tree as well. QUESTION - How is it possible that Adam was unable to hold himself back from eating the fruits for such a short amount of time? ANSWER - Hashem created the world and the people in it with an equal balance of good and bad. A person with a smaller yetzer tov will have a smaller yetzer hara with smaller challenges. A person who has a bigger yetzer tov,
will be given a bigger yetzer hara with bigger challenges. Hashem gave us the mission to strengthen the good and overcome the bad and the challenges of the yetzer hara. Adam HoRishon was a very holy and special person. He was created by Hashem Himself, and his actions had a great impact on all of creation! The yetzer hara knew about Adam’s greatness and therefore put tremendous effort to cause Adam to sin. Unfortunately, the yetzer hara succeeded in its effort, even though the time was so short. LESSON - Sometimes we will find that a specific mitzva is difficult for us, even though it should be easy. We may think that we should just skip this mitzva and move on to another mitzva that is not a challenge for us. We learn from the story of Eitz HaDaas that specifically the mitzvos that are difficult for us to do are the most important ones for us to do, and that is precisely why the yetzer hara is trying to stop us from doing them.

Many Years ago, Eretz Yisroel was under Roman rule. During this challenging period, a terrible decree was made against the Jewish people by the Roman emperor. The Yidden sent Nachum Ish Gamzu as their representative to beg the emperor to change the decree. To strengthen their plea, they entrusted Nachum with a magnificent chest full of precious gems as a gift for the emperor. During his travels, Nachum Ish Gamzu stopped at an inn to rest. When he woke up the next morning, Reb Nachum prepared to continue his journey. He carefully inspected the chest, only to exclaim “Oy vei! Where are the jewels!?” He realized the precious jewels had been stolen, replaced by nothing but ordinary sand. “Nu, thought Reb Nachum, Gam zu letovah, this too is for the good.” Calmy, Reb Nachum Ish Gam Zu continued his journey until he arrived in Rome, where he arranged a meeting with the emperor. He approached the emperor with utmost respect, presenting the chest
on behalf of the Jewish people “Here is a gift from the Jewish people. We ask that the harsh decrees should be lessened.” The emperor, eager for the anticipated riches, could hardly contain his excitement. "A gift, you say? More gold, more precious gems, perhaps? Soldiers, open the chest! I can't wait any longer... What is this?! How dare you insult me by presenting sand as a gift? Sand? Sand?!?! What do you have to say for yourself?” “Hmm” Reb Nachum replied with serenity “Gam zu letovah, this too is for the good.” Suddenly, Eliyahu Hanavi appeared, disguised as an advisor to the emperor. “Honored emperor, do you know what a special gift this is? Let me explain. The Jewish people’s forefather, Avraham Avinu fought against four strong kings. How, you might ask, was he able to win against them? He took sand and threw it into the air, the sand transformed mid-flight into arrows and spears aimed directly at the enemy. Perhaps your Excellency, this is the same special sand!”

Reb Nachum Ish Gamzu greeted each event in life with the sentence, “Gam zu letovah.” Even when sad or scary things happened, he declared it was a good thing, because Hashem did it. We too can say Gam Zu letovah when we lose a toy or don’t feel so well. We might not see it right away, but it definitely will end up being good. Hashem is in charge and everything He does is for the good.

INGREDIENTS
PREPARATION
Cake
1. In a bowl, mix all the cake batter ingredients together. Pour into a very well greased tube pan. (I used a bundt and kept the cake upside down.)
2 eggs 1 cup sugar 1 cup oil 1 cup milk (I used almond, such as Gefen Almond Milk, to keep it parve) 3 cups flour 3 teaspoons Haddar Baking Powder 1 teaspoon Gefen Cinnamon Crumbs 1 cup flour 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon Gefen Cinnamon 1/3 – 1/2 cup oil 1 medium apple, peeled and diced small
