A Homeless Child

It is Not WHO THEY ARE It is WHAT IS HAPPENING TO THEM

Imagine receiving a phone call from Rady’s hospital. There is a sweet six-year-old boy with aggressive cancer that requires an amputation of his leg. The boy, his mother and his young sister are homeless. Can you help?

Fortunately, that phone call was placed to FOCUS, Friends of Children United Society. The VP of Projects was able to get quick approval to come to their aid. The family had found housing but there was no furniture, and they were sleeping on the floor. FOCUS purchased a requested bunk bed and members went to build it. A huge smile appeared on the face of the young boy as he balanced as best he could while helping with the construction. “I’m excited about my bunk bed!” he exclaimed to the caring FOCUS members were there for him and his family.

I don’t know how being homeless happened to this child. Statistics show that San Diego has a growing population of homeless families with children. With the high cost of living in the area, even some working families are finding themselves living in their car or on the streets.

San Diego also has over 1,800 unaccompanied homeless youth, who have become unhoused for a variety of reasons including poverty or unsafe home environments. These children are extremely vulnerable to violence, gang recruitment and depression. Many have been victims of sex trafficking.

FOCUS has proudly worked for over 40 years to bring hope and help to our local vulnerable children. An all-volunteer non-profit, we provide efficient help to our partners working with homeless children in times of crisis. FOCUS has provided everything from a van to transport street teens to shelter, to preparing and serving meals for homeless kids.

Individually, we might not be the person on the other end of the phone to learn about the problem a child in crisis is facing. However, we can join together to be a part of a solution when a call for help comes. If you would like to join in the FOCUS mission, start by visiting focus-sdkids.org and becoming a member, supporter or donor.

As Local Children Face Increasing Hardships

FOCUS Brings Hope and Help With Community Involvement

16 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2023 GIVING BACK | FRIENDS OF CHILDREN UNITED SOCIETY

Statistics tell a sad story of San Diego children in crisis.

* More than 1,800 youth are homeless in San Diego.

* Military families are experiencing emotional and financial crises due to high cost of living.

* Nearly 85% of juveniles who face trial in the juvenile court system are functionally illiterate.

* The foster care system has over 2,700 children and teens who have been taken from their homes because of ongoing abuse and neglect.

* San Diego has been identified as one of the 13 cities in the nation with the highest incidence of child prostitution.

FOCUS had its annual gala aboard the USS Midway last month, an amazing evening of dinner, entertainment, fabulous auction items and dancing under the stars. The generosity of the attendees at the event will be reflected in FOCUS being able to extend its reach to address ever-increasing needs for our local children.

“The challenges some local children face are heartbreaking and knowing how to help can feel overwhelming," shared FOCUS President Denise Donato-McConnell. “That is why I am so proud to be a part of FOCUS. For the past 4 decades, FOCUS has been able to bring hope and help to San Diego’s most vulnerable children.”

FOCUS, Friends of Children United Society, was formed by a concerned Coronado community over 40 years ago. Members recognized some of the problems children faced and wanted to be a part of the solution. Since 1982, they have partnered with over 100 local children’s charities to help over 100,000 children in crisis or with ongoing needs.

“Each month we receive project requests for desperately needed items," explains Sharyn Blowgiewicz, VP of Projects. “Knowing we will be able to help is extremely rewarding.” FOCUS doesn’t fulfill monetary requests. Rather, all its projects are for physical items that go directly to help children in need. Project requests have ranged from $500 to over $30,000 and have included everything from diapers for military families to a van to transport homeless teens to safe shelter. Blowgiewicz and her project team team, vet each agency and request to make sure both align with the FOCUS mission and that the items will go directly to children in need. The requests are then presented for FOCUS Board approval before being shared with the membership for their vote. Members not only decide if the project is one that they support, but can indicate if they would like to be a part of shopping and/or delivering the project items to the children’s charity.

“As a local organization, we are able to respond quickly to project requests from San Diego’s children’s charities," explains Pat Robitaille, current executive VP who served as FOCUS president for three years. “Even during the pandemic," Robitaille continued, "when FOCUS was unable to fundraise, our concerned members found ways to respond with food and clothing drives for struggling charities." Robitaille is an example of how FOCUS encourages members to share their unique talents and skills. As a former CIO for several major companies, she has helped lead the organization forward with greater technical capability. This has expanded FOCUS's ability to fulfill its mission.

“Educating our community about the need [to support San Diego's children] and sharing how they can help is another important component of the FOCUS model," shares Lisa Alves, VP of Cause Development. “While FOCUS answers monthly requests from each of our causes, homelessness, military families, child health and well-being, foster care, rehabilitation, education and child sex trafficking," clarifies Alves, “We also highlight specific causes to bring more awareness about the problem and possible solutions."

Alves recently created the Happily Ever After focus on literacy event. The evening was an extremely enjoyable and meaningful night for FOCUS members and supporters and raised enough money to fund FOCUS Little Libraries. These street-side lending libraries provide children in disadvantaged areas with more access to free books to encourage reading. Alves has already installed several around San Diego, including in Imperial Beach and at Silver Strand Elementary.

20 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2023
Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey and FOCUS members celebrate the installation of Little Libraries for children in disadvantaged areas.

FOCUS Treasurer Carol Dobi adds, “Since FOCUS is an all-volunteer organization with no physical headquarters or salaries, we are able keep overhead low which ensures that most of the money raised goes directly to help children in need." FOCUS members who volunteer to shop for supplies are reimbursed quickly.

“FOCUS is such an important part of the community," beams Juliane Morris, FOCUS VP of Marketing and Communications and president of Morris Crown Marketing. As a leader in the digital marketing field, Morris has provided FOCUS with a robust social media presence that has drawn in a diverse new group of interested followers. Morris has grown up with FOCUS as her mother has been a FOCUS a member for over 20 years, illustrating how important the group has become to generations of family members.

Carla Bacon, VP of Membership, agrees. “My mother was a member, I now sit on the Board, and my daughter uses her talents to help FOCUS as well." Bacon shared her own story about how this extended family helped her through challenging times. “It’s truly the people for me that make this organization special," she said. “I have never felt more welcome or enjoyed the friendships in an organization more." Bacon points out that her story isn’t unique. In an organization that has been active since 1982, many members have experienced loss such as a spouse, and these people have shared with her the comfort of being part of the FOCUS extended family.

Recently, FOCUS had its annual gala aboard the USS Midway, an amazing evening of dinner, entertainment, fabulous auction items and dancing under the stars. The generosity of the attendees at the event will be reflected

in FOCUS being able to extend its reach to address ever-increasing needs for our local children.

“The funds we are able to raise in our fundraisers make a huge difference in how many project requests we will be able to fund the upcoming year," says Therese Pallares, VP of Fundraising.

On November 2, 2023 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, FOCUS will be having a cause event focused on the problems San Diego’s homeless youth face. It will take place at the beautiful Coronado Cays Yacht Club and will be catered by Timmy’s Place Cafe, which employs and teaches skills to homeless youth. The evening will include experts discussing the problem and possible solutions as well as young people who have experienced homelessness sharing their stories. Those interested in being a part of a meaningful evening should make reservations by going to focushomeless.givesmart.com or call (619) 631-5356.

Opportunities to be of part of FOCUS teams are available year-round. Details on how to become a FOCUS member or donor can be found on their website, focus-sdkids.org.

“We are extremely grateful for our members and donors," says DonatoMcConnell. "What we are able to accomplish can be directly attributed to their generosity.” “We need the support of a caring community wanting to be a part of the solution to the problems of vulnerable local children in crisis.”

To learn more, make a donation or become a member, visit their website at focus-sdkids.org.

• FOCUS is an all volunteer charity organization with a mission to improve the lives of children and teens in need within San Diego County.

Have you ever stopped to wonder about the history of those schools or how they began on our little island haven? Well, here is some of our schools' history. It all started when there was village built in Coronado, when men rowed over from San Diego to hunt rabbits in the late 1800s. Then some gentlemen with a great deal of foresight bought this island, a party which included Elisha Babcock and Hampton Story, founders of the Coronado Beach Company. Next on the agenda…build a resort hotel like none other and the people will come! Construction crews were ferried over daily to work on the early stages of building the Hotel del Coronado. That was not the most efficient idea, so they ultimately provided housing for these men on the island. After the tents and buildings were occupied, it became apparent that the families would soon follow. With the growing population, more housing was built and the village soon became busy. The townspeople

needed a grocer, baker and cobbler, among other simple establishments to meet the daily necessities of life in the late 19th century. With these families came the children, and a school to educate these young early settlers was not far off.

Recognizing that the successful residential and commercial development of the island and resort would be reliant on satisfactory educational facilities, Babcock lobbied for the formation of a board of trustees for Coronado Schools. He also provided the land at the very center of the island to the community below market rate, to be dedicated for use as a public school. In January 1887, those first students attended school in the temporary wood-floored tent provided at 7th Street & D Avenue. Enrollment rose from 7 to 50 pupils in a single term of instruction! In late fall of 1887, the students were able to attend a temporary schoolhouse constructed at 7th Street & E Avenue, accessible to students living in any direction on the island. The first permanent schoolhouse was opened in January 1888, a one-story frame building on the site where our high school sits today. This structure was later demolished in 1923. Coronado Historical Association has photos of the students in group school photos throughout the years.

Another bit of early school history in Coronado is the Coronado Summer Beach School on the grounds of the Hotel del Coronado, which began in 1892 and ran for three years. It was the first summer school in the state. Later the Del would host another Beach School. It was a private school which consisted of a series of small buildings on the hotel grounds. The establishment ran from 1913 to 1941 when it the largest building was converted into a war ration stamp center.

Both the grammar school and high school were permanently established in facilities collectively called the Coronado School in 1913. This facility was located on the block between 6th and 7th Street, and E and F Avenue. The grammar school was later renamed to Central Elementary School. The upper grades remained at the Coronado School until a separate school building was constructed in 1923 as an independent high school. That building was renovated

in 1961, and again in 2006. If you walk to the front of the high school building and look at the columns out front, you will see the brass plates designating each of these events. Note the cornerstone in the base wall of the auditorium which has been saved over the years and reinserted in the construction of the auditorium in 2006. When next you have occasion to be at Coronado High School, you now have something both to locate and read — and hopefully a newfound appreciation for the history of education on the island.

More recently, to add to the high school’s history is the Norfolk pine in the courtyard thanks to a special education teacher years ago. Note the height of that tree. We have teachers and students to thank for the mosaics adorning several locations which will live on for years to come, completed under the guidance of artist Kirstin Green. And have you ever been in the courtyard and seen the tiki statue? This fun addition joined the school in 1962. A story for another time.

The Glorietta School, a school serving children who lived in the Federal Housing

Project in Coronado, was in operation from 1944 to 1976. The Federal Housing Project was built as low-cost housing for military personnel just following World War II and is still well-remembered. The school was located near where Tidelands Park is today.

The current Sacred Heart Church was built in 1920. The Sacred Heart School attached to the institution opened its doors to students in 1946, at the wishes of longtime pastor Monsignor John F. Parcell. Supplying five classrooms at first, three more were later added on. Over the past 77 years, thousands of students have enrolled, though the school has stayed

much smaller than the public school system on the island.

Over the years, Coronado has been home to a number of other schools as well, including Christ Church Day School which opened in 1957; preschools such as Ms. Bunny’s and ECDC; Silver Strand Elementary School; Village Elementary School; Coronado School of the Arts within CHS; and Palm Academy.

Nowadays, Coronado has many wonderful schools with an impressive list of alumni to prove it! As a community that truly cares for children and that values education, we can be proud of our schools now, and throughout our history.

∙ Carol Pastor and her family have lived in Coronado since the mid-1970s. Mother of seven girls, many of whom still live here in the village, Carol has been involved in the community over the years with the Friends of the Library, Historic Resource Commission, and most recently writing about Coronado history for the Coronado Historical Association. An avid history buff since her college days, exploring our local history is a perfect fit.

Ret. ADMIRAL WILLIAM McRAVEN

PEOPLE | BRAD WILLIS VIDEOGRAPHY

Retired Admiral William McRaven filled the house at the Coronado Performing Arts Center on August 3rd for a talk on his new book, Wisdom of the Bullfrog

"Bullfrog" is the name for the longest serving Navy SEAL, a title given to the Admiral after his 37 years as a SEAL.

Four-star Admiral William McRaven also served as the ninth commander of the United States Special Operations Command and led the mission that got Osama bin Laden. His evening in Coronado was hosted by the Coronado Public Library.

In an exclusive interview, Brad Willis spoke with Ret. Admiral McRaven on a wide range of topics.

Part One delves into his new book, which is based on leadership techniques McRaven learned from his illustrious career that he believes are applicable to all our lives.

In Part Two, we will hear from the Ret. Admiral on the operation he spearheaded to get Osama bin Laden, his take on our democracy and current threats to our national security. McRaven also has a special message to our current Coronado Navy SEALs.

The OysterBig

Shucks, Summer is Over

FOOD | OLIVE AVENUE SUPPER CLUB
42 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2023
Captain Jack's grilled oysters at the farmer's market.

This summer, besides eating oysters, I spent some downtime reading about these briny delights. If you love books about food, Mark Kurlansky, author of COD and SALT, has written an excellent book titled The Big Oyster that has helped feed my lust for shellfish. The book's subtitle says it all: “History on the Half Shell.” Who knew there was so much to learn about oysters and our connection to them as Americans? While I was fascinated to consume all Mark was dishing out, the book made me want to shuck my way through summer. When I wasn't tossing empty oyster shells into the garden in our backyard, I was seeking them out in town or bellying up to an oyster bar in San Diego.

How do you describe eating a raw oyster to someone who has never had one? Tom Robbins, author of such great works as Jitterbug Perfume and Still Life of a Woodpecker, wrote, "Eating a raw oyster is like French kissing a mermaid." When writing about or describing this mysterious bivalve, I have used this quote more than once. One of the great pleasures in my life is French kissing mermaids every chance I get. Here are some places where you can steal a kiss.

Georgia Chakos and I shucking and eating oysters in the front yard on top of my old igloo cooler.

Oysters On-Island

While I may miss a place or two in one of the hotels, the primary spots for oysters on the island are as follows. Check into these places directly to get their updated offerings.

Jolie is relatively new to town, but it immediately got my attention with its Oyster Hour from 2-6pm Wednesday-Friday for $2 oysters.

The Brigantine is an oldie but a goodie with oysters on the half-shell and oysters Rockefeller. After raw oysters, I love them roasted, and Rockefeller is a classic.

Stake has excellent oyster deals from 4-6:30pm daily at their happy hour. They serve East and West Coast oysters on the half shell and do a tremendous woodfired oven version of Oysters Rockefeller. They also feature an oyster shooter.

The Bluewater Grill brings back Chart House memories and serves both oysters on the half shell and Oysters Rockefeller.

Oysters Off-Island

Once over the bridge, oysters are abundant whether you buy them to shuck at home yourself, or eat them while dining out.

Fort Oak in Mission Hills is by far my favorite off-island oyster spot. They have $1 oysters on Monday at happy hour. This Monday treat was a secret for so long, but not anymore. If you want to experience this delightful spot for Oysters, get there early — I mean really early. Their roasted oysters change frequently, but I have never had one that didn't blow my mind.

Ironside is a gem in Little Italy. I go there on Saturdays for lunch after the farmers market. The Bloody Mary pro tip is to order them with an oyster on the half-shell garnish. Ironside always has a fresh selection of oysters; they do a great version of Rockefeller and occasionally serve them grilled.

44 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2023
Any event with friends and family is an opportunity to enjoy oysters.

Mabel’s Gone Fishing in North Park is another favorite for oysters and great cocktails. They have an excellent selection of oysters to choose from, the menu is fun and the atmosphere is delightful.

Captain Jack’s at the Hillcrest or Little Italy farmer’s market never disappoints with their grilled oysters with garlic, butter, parmesan and parsley. I can smell and taste them now.

If you want to shuck your own, I go to Catalina Offshore Products off Morena Boulevard or Point Loma Seafood. Both places will sell you an oyster knife for shucking. Or you can get a good French oyster knife in town at Française, the home goods store on the corner of C and Orange. For recipes and handling instructions, reference my Crown City Magazine article from February 2020.

The Beach Boys said it best when they sang “I wish they could all could be California girls,” for my preference, Northern California girls from the Bay area. West Coast oysters are some of my favorite as they are smaller, sweeter and less briny than their East coast counterparts. California Mermaids are simply better kissers.

deep connections to our coastal community.

Each piece, artfully inspired by the theme of water, evokes sheer happiness and pleasure in all its grandeur that only the tranquility of the ocean can initiate. Within an instant while viewing this unique exhibition the beholder realizes that, just as Jacques Cousteau ensures, “The sea, once it casts its spell, holds one in its net of wonder forever.”

Tucked away in a quiet hallway just around the corner from the entrance to the John D. Spreckels Center is one of the most awe-inspiring art exhibitions yet to grace our cherished community of Coronado. Entitled Happiness Comes in Waves, this vibrant display of more than three dozen distinctive pieces showcases the craftsmanship and creativity of 14 local artists — all with

Take, for example, well-known professional photographer Derek Emge’s Aqua Lines, a surprisingly calming yet equally spellbinding photo captured on the Imperial Beach Pier as an immense wave began to curl during the onslaught of last winter’s stormy swells that wreaked havoc on our coastline and carved sand cliffs into our beaches. Photographed at approximately the same time and the same

location, yet juxtaposed so distinctively to its sisterimage is Rainbow Swell, capturing rays of sunlight dramatically shining through the waft of a wave as it begins to crash toward the shore.

Working as a professional photographer for about five years, Emge was a highly accomplished civil litigation attorney for more than three decades before retiring his LexisNexis professional pursuits to explore this art form as first a hobby and then a passion. “My fascination with photography began with my first camera, a Pentax ME film camera I received in the 8th grade,” Emge explains. “I spent my early years documenting the adventures of my friends in the outdoors.” He notes that when his son became a sponsored pro-surfer, his interest in surf photography was sparked and he still spends much of his time shooting in and around the water. All things oceanic, or in the outdoors, continue to capture his creative curiosity, although he also enjoys working directly with clients to capture varying images for their personally consigned projects.

Of course, what would be a Coronado artist exhibition without the works of the Emerald Isle’s own Jody Esquer. Those who have followed Esquer’s artistry over the past several years know her deep fascination with our local beaches and

the ocean, so it comes as no surprise that each of the three pieces she has on display in this exhibition showcases a different aspect of our coastline with breathtaking grace.

Sailing into Happiness, so appropriately named like this exhibition, is equally daring as it is dramatic, capturing the sheer joy of sailing that anyone who has ever enjoyed that experience can testify. Created in acrylics, Esquer layered level upon level of different colors, from orange and magenta to varying shades of dark blue, to create the depth of color that resulted in its eventual muted and subdued hues. Then Soaring, a painting inspired by her years as a surfer, completely captures the elegance of a pelican just after it touches on the tip of a wave with water droplets kissing its beak and wings as it lofts every so gently into the air. Its movement calls attention to the magnificent colors of the intense horizon as this majestic creature ascends with ease.

For fans of photography printed on metal, take in the vibrant Arctic Plunge captured by Laurie McCormick. A somewhat self-taught artist, McCormick enjoys taking photography trips to far corners of the world, refining her skills while exploring gloriously exotic locations. Arctic Plunge, taken on her second trek to the Antarctic, captures a fellow sojourner as she daringly jumps into the southern hemisphere’s frigid glacial waters with icebergs floating nearby. “I loved her position,” McCormick explains, “and the way that she just jumped and did it!”

Arctic Plunge by Laurie McCormick

Another highlight of this exhibition is Ventotene by local favorite Susan Butterfly-Ebert. Capturing the waterfront along the isle of Ventotene, one of the Pontine Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea 25 miles off the coast of Italy, this oil painting holds particular significance for its creator. Established during the Roman Empire, this tiny islet was owned by Emperor Augustus who had a huge summer palace built there. The palace is reputed to be of exile for his banished daughter in the year 2 BCE, purportedly because of her promiscuous behavior. Centuries later, it became home to Italian citizens displaced by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, one of whom happened to be the artist’s own grandmother. In this captivating painting, one sees the ancient arched caves carved into a wall of stone with a quaint commercial vessel berthed nearby.

An avid oil painter for just over six years, Butterfly-Ebert credits an evening session of Wine & Paint at Emerald C Gallery for sparking her interest in this artform. Living half the year in Scottsdale and half in Coronado, she enrolled in the Scottsdale Art Institute at the urging of her thenteenaged son. He saw in her saw in her both passion and promise and insisted she pursue painting as a hobby.

Another eye-catching piece, Pond at Balboa Park, so perfectly captures the grace and tranquility of seasonal lily pads as they begin their bloom. Carol Young, the artist, very quintessentially captures the quiet beauty of these aquatic flowers floating in a pond in San Diego’s premier park, which only bloom one time per year beginning in late spring before becoming dormant in the fall. Having spent many years living in Hawaii, Young has a particular penchant for florals, especially when the blooms interact elegantly with water.

This is just the tip of the iceberg (no pun intended) in terms of artwork on display in Happiness Comes in Waves, which runs through January 2024. Sponsored by the City of Coronado, the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission and John D. Spreckels Center, viewing of this exhibition is Monday through Saturday during Spreckels Center hours. The mission of the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission, which was created by the City Council in 2011, is to serve and partner with Coronado's many local artists and cultural arts organizations, and to act as a catalyst in further developing a vibrant and cohesive arts community, strengthening arts education, enhancing cultural tourism and economic development.

INTRODUCING MEXICO VIVO

Coronado Philharmonia Orchestra in concert with Mariachi Garibaldi

The Coronado Philharmonia Orchestra (CPO) will be performing its next one-of-a-kind concert called Mexico Vivo with Mariachi Garibaldi, beginning at 7pm on Saturday, September 9 at the Coronado Performing Arts Center. Tickets are now on sale at CoronadoPhilharmonia.org.

The Grammy award-winning Mariachi Garibaldi ensemble, which has been entertaining audiences on three continents for the past 25 years, will join the Philharmonia as guest performers.

During the Mexico Vivo concert, the audience will be treated to a fusion of original classical music and the vibrant melodies of Mariachi Garibaldi. This exciting collaboration promises to be a unique musical experience that celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Mexico and the classic symphony orchestra experience.

56 CROWN CITY MAGAZINE | SEPTEMBER 2023 SOUND WAVES | CORONADO PHILHARMONIA ORCHESTRA SEPTEMBER 2023

Osvaldo Mendoza, Coronado Philharmonia’s gifted musical director, is composing much of the musical score. He will be joined by Dr. Jeff Nevin, who is a classical music and mariachi trumpeter and a conductor specializing in the interpretation of Mexican music.

The concert promises to be a celebration of the best of both worlds with the mariachi performers joining forces with the Coronado Philharmonia to create an electrifying musical experience.

Mendoza, who was trained as a composer and conductor at the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University, started the CPO in 2021 with a mission to serve the community of Coronado by providing professional level symphonic performances to build local support for classical music. Since its inception, the CPO has captivated the audience by introducing a wide range of traditional and new music repertoires, like in March, when they brought renowned bagpiper Kevin Weed to town for a fascinating concert called An Irish Journey that wove traditional Irish sounds with a classical orchestra. Another goal of the orchestra is to take advantage of the tremendous talents of classical musicians throughout San Diego County to give them an outlet for their creativity — which ultimately becomes music to our community’s ears!

Healthy Back-to-School Habits

A new school year is an exciting time for kids and parents. At Sharp Coronado Hospital, we want to make sure everyone stays safe and healthy, and recommend following these tips:

• Practice frequent hand-washing with soap and water to prevent the spread of illness.

• Stay up to date on vaccinations, including an annual flu shot.

• Boost immunity by eating a healthy diet.

• Stay physically active and get enough sleep.

If you or a loved one needs care, you can conveniently save a spot in our ER at sharp.com/coronadoER. Walk-ins always welcome.

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 911 or visit the nearest emergency room.
