DARRELL NESBITT/CROSSROADS THIS WEEK
The community of Angusville was among the villages and towns to receive a heavy amount of snow last week, which once again saw snow removal equipment thrust into action. As this gentleman focused on the task at hand, the large lot in front of the thrift store was slowly cleared on the afternoon of Thursday, Feb. 19. Spring may be a few short months away, however, the added moisture never harms anybody.
Russell and Virden see new security presence as provincial government implements health centre safety rollout
RACHEAL FLINTOFT
Crossroads This Week
Healthcare centres in Russell and Virden are now operating with a permanent security presence as part of a province-wide effort to protect front-line staff and patients.
Prairie Mountain Health
(PMH) has confirmed that both the Russell Health Centre and Virden Health Centre are now base locations for assigned security officers.
These officers are stationed on-site to provide a steady presence for the hospitals, as well as the local personal care homes and the community health programs.
PMH Manager of Security Services Steve Geletchuk, advised that these teams are part of a larger regional expansion.
In total, the province is funding 20 Institutional Safety Officers (ISOs) across the PMH region.
These ISOs are licensed peace
officers with specialized training in crisis intervention and deescalation, designed to handle tense situations so that medical staff can focus on care.
The initiative is part of a larger $128-million provincial investment that adds 128 fully funded safety officers to Manitoba’s health system. This in-
cludes 60 officers at Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg, 18 at St. Boniface Hospital, 18 at Victoria General Hospital, 12 at Selkirk Mental Health Centre, as well as five new officers starting at Thompson General Hospital this March.
