Weather and You
Weather affects most of us in one way or another. I feel energetic when I wake up to sunshine. I feel like going back to sleep when the sky is overcast, or it is raining. And even when the temperature isn’t necessarily weather related—like a freezing movie theatre, or a hot stuffy conference room—heat, cold, sun, rain, each affect how we feel and act. Did you know that Alzheimer’s and dementia can affect the brain’s control centers, resulting in increased sensitivity to heat and cold? A 2018 research study demonstrated that cognitive (thinking) ability changed depending on the season. It appeared higher in the fall and summer when days are longer and sunnier. During winter and spring when the sun sets earlier, people experienced more episodes of sundowning which translates into an escalation of anger, irritation, and confusion. So, it may be important for you and your loved one to watch the weather and take precautions when necessary. Avoid uncomfortable spaces. Dress appropriately for the situation. Stay hydrated and find ways to make your environment consistently pleasant with both lighting and air conditioning.

A picnic outing at Addenbrooke park In September, we took advantage of the beautiful weather and went to a nearby park to have a picnic. We were able to see some tiny birds still in their nest as well as the geese on the pond. Sept. was also a month with lots of culture to learn about such as Scottish/Irish heritage day, Mexican Independence Day, Rosh Hashanah and having fun with Grandparents’ Day and Labor Day. We mostly enjoyed the different food that each special day brought us. Food always seems to bring people together.

Maranatha Volunteers International is constructing an 8,000-square foot facility to house showers, restrooms, a commercial kitchen, garage, offices, medical room, and a large gathering space for meals and classes. In August, 19 Maranatha volunteers framed the building. During October volunteers will install the roof, frame more walls, and get the building closed in before winter. More volunteer projects will come in the spring.

On a ranch in eastern Wyoming lies a rich deposit of dinosaur bones in what is known as the Lance Formation. Students and archeologists come here every year to the Hanson Ranch Research Station. The students learn quarrying techniques and with the scientists, unearth upper Cretaceous dinosaur bones. More than 30,000 bones have been excavated so far. Often visitors stay at the site. Conditions are rustic—guests camp in tents, with only a few small outbuildings to provide support. The main building was destroyed in 2020 by a tornado.

Each year, Maranatha works with organizations in the United States and Canada to provide volunteer labor for various construction or renovation projects at summer camps and retreat centers, schools, and churches. Work ranges from renovations of existing buildings to new construction and saves thousands of dollars in labor costs.
