Welcome to Our New Executive Director! Crossroads at Lakewood Memory Care is pleased to welcome Cory Strauch as our new Executive Director. Cory grew up in healthcare. His mom was a nurse and his grandmother ran a home health company. His first personal encounter with healthcare was in high school. Cory, as a member of a championship ROTC unit, learned discipline and responsibility. He was also introduced to seniors with and without cognitive deficits while participating in community outreach programs. His is a true “work your way” up story when it comes to his experience in assisted living and memory care. He began as a dishwasher at 15 and then moved to caregiving when he turned 16. By 18, Cory worked in various facilities as a QMAP and other roles. At Crossroads, Cory first worked overnights as a QMAP and

Executive Director Bulletin Hello friends and families. As some of you have heard, I have been promoted from Crossroads’ Northglenn facility with the intention of getting Lakewood firmly on track. I look forward to meeting with everyone and serving my new community. I would like to hold a family night meeting as in the past in the very near future after some of the dust settles.

We would like to introduce you to our resident William (Bill) Chirnside. Since Bill was a small child, his family would take vacations to look at quarries. For Bill’s entire life he has loved rocks and minerals. Ultimately, Bill attended the Colorado School of Mines, graduating with a degree of Engineering of Mines. A degree etched into a metal plate. Some of the highlights of his life were finding rare minerals, with his trained eye, many in Colorado, for which he received several awards. Some of his finds can be seen at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, as well as on display at the Colorado School of Mines. It is our honor to now have him call Crossroads home and be an active member of our Geology Club.
I want to reassure everyone that I have been hard at work and some exciting announcements will be coming very soon! To give a brief summary we have been both hiring and onboarding care staff. I have met with the local Ombudsman and she has voiced to me the concerns that have been brought to her attention and we will address each and everyone one, in addition to those that have not been reported to her. As some have heard we will soon be getting a new nurse to run the resident services department! We are very excited to have her on our team and can’t wait to witness her years of experience and knowledge shine at Crossroads. I unfortunately can’t give away all of my bag of secrets just yet, but we are making great strides in meeting with providers, revamping the kitchen and resident services, and getting Crossroads at Lakewood out into the community and into peoples ears. I would just like everyone to be assured that I and the team are working very hard to bring compassionate care to you and your loved ones.

Alzheimer’s: New Treatments are on the Horizon Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60-80% of dementia cases. Two abnormal structures called plaques and tangles disrupt the normal function of nerve cells in the brain. 1.
Plaques are deposits of a protein fragment called beta-amyloid (BAY-tuh AM-uh-loyd) that build up in the spaces between nerve cells.
2. Tangles are twisted fibers of another protein called tau (rhymes with “wow”) that build up inside cells. The first symptom is usually short-term memory loss. Other symptoms include: difficulty learning new information, problems with thinking and organizing, poor judgement, difficulty speaking and personality and behavior changes. Sundowning syndrome can affect people in mid to late-stage Alzheimer’s. Sundowning can cause people to become hyperactive, agitated and confused and can cause sleep disruption. Alzheimer’s disease changes are now known to be occurring in the brain many years before symptoms occur. Average life expectancy is 8 to 12 years after diagnosis. Ready for a little hope? Father’s day was a big winner with our residents. Fathers received gift bags and the ladies enjoyed a tasty dessert.
Upcoming from Maranatha Maranatha, a non-profit that provides short term volunteer opportunities worldwide, benefits directly from projects sponsored by Crossroads Senior Living. In June Maranatha volunteers ventured back into service at a remote school campus in Oregon. Among the tasks tackled on this project were painting the exterior and interior of the girls dorm, making miscellaneous repairs in the boys dorm, installing
trim in a staff house, and landscaping. Volunteers also worked at nearby Camp Umpqua, installing pine siding in the lodge and constructing a duplex cabin. Wherever volunteers were stationed, project coordinator and Maranatha board member, Ed Jensen, noticed them doing extra work beyond what was assigned. “These aren’t the kind of people who sit around and enjoy the ambiance,” said Jensen. “They saw the need, jumped on it, and took care of it.” For first-time volunteer Ron Gadreault, not only was the work rewarding, but the community he joined was special as well. “I didn’t realize how much of a family it becomes, and how much people mean to you,” said Gadreault. “That is how Maranatha seems to be, a family helping others. Everybody cares about each other and cares about the project, and we work together as a family works together. And you get kind of sad when you have to leave.”

July at Lakewood In July, we will celebrate July 4th. Since some families will have their own activities on the 4th, we’ll have ours on the 5th including making some independence crafts.

The Home Run Derby is on Monday, July 12th. Everyone, staff and residents, will be wearing baseball clothes, hats etc. And on July 13th we’ll watch the All-Star game together.
One of our favorites is the Opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics. We plan to celebrate our athletes who have worked so hard to represent America and compete in Japan. Come join us on July 23rd at 5pm.

Continued from page 1 soon transitioned into daytime work, eventually becoming a Resident Care Coordinator and most recently the Resident’s Services Director at Crossroads at Northglenn. Cory received his Executive Director license in January 2020 and has been in Crossroad’s Administrator In Training program since. Cory is an active member of CALA, the Colorado Assisted Living Association, where he received various training and certifications including his Dementia Certification from the Colorado Gerontological Society. Satisfaction of the resident, staff, family and care provider has always been Cory’s utmost priority and one he plans to continue as he leads the team at Lakewood. Expect a revamping of the dietary program and resident services immediately. Cory’s long range goal: Elevate Crossroads at Lakewood Memory Care to the next level, as the premiere memory care facility that it is, for the residents in our community, their families, and our staff and care providers.

Zucchini Salad INGREDIENTS FOR THE ZUCCHINI 1 1/2 lb. (about 3) zucchini, quartered and thinly sliced 1/2 tsp. kosher salt

Dijon mustard 1 1/2 tsp. honey 1/4 c. mint leaves, finely chopped Juice and zest of ¼ lemon 1/2 tsp. freshly ground black pepper 1/2 tsp. kosher salt FOR THE PICKLED SHALLOTS 1 large shallot, minced Juice of ¾ lemon 1/2 tsp. granulated sugar 1/2 tsp. kosher salt FOR ASSEMBLY 1 (15.5-oz.) can chickpeas, rinsed and drained Crumbled feta, for serving Crushed red pepper flakes, for serving
DIRECTIONS 1. In a large colander, toss zucchini with salt until evenly coated. Let sit 15 minutes, then shake and drain well. 2. Meanwhile, make dressing: In a medium bowl, stir together all dressing ingredients until smooth and well combined. 3. Make pickled shallots: In a jar, add all pickled shallot ingredients. Close lid tightly and shake vigorously. Let sit 10 minutes. 4. Assemble salad: In a large mixing bowl, toss together drained zucchini, chickpeas, and most of the dressing until evenly coated. Transfer to a serving platter, then top with pickled shallots, crumbled feta, and red pepper flakes. Add more dressing as desired.
