For many of us, fall is a season of abundance. But for vulnerable farming families around the world, the harvest season carries a far greater significance. The crops gathered during these weeks often determine whether children will have enough to eat, whether school fees can be paid and whether families can invest in the next planting season. That’s why Cross International equips farmers with the tools, training and opportunities they need to multiply not only their harvests, but their hope for the future.
MULTIPLYING THE HARVEST “People want to work, they just need a little help to start.” Jose speaks from the heart. He has always been a hard worker. The frustrating reality for rural Nicaraguan farmers like him is that no matter how dedicated they are, their efforts often are not enough. Jose used to spend exhausting hours as a day laborer on coffee farms, while also producing his own crops like corn and beans with help from his wife, Lucia, and their 18-year-old son. And yet, there was barely enough food for the family, which also includes two other kids, ages ten and two.
Your partnership with Cross International is helping families escape the cycle of poverty. Jose and Lucia’s family is now enjoying nutritious meals each day. The kids are healthy and able to get the valuable education that may otherwise have eluded them.

This weighed heavily on Jose and Lucia, and it seemed there were no viable alternatives. But God had a different plan. Jose jumped at the chance to participate in Cross International’s Community Transformation project. Through this program, he was given additional tools, learned advanced agricultural techniques, and was introduced to avenues where his crops could be sold at a substantially higher profit margin. He grew thousands of bell peppers, and within two years his income had increased tenfold. Meanwhile, Lucia has been able to raise pigs through a loan she received to further support the family.
Trusting the Provider ZAMBIA – Esnala zips to the local market on her motorbike, where she sells chickens, as well as crops like maize and soybeans. The single mother saved enough to purchase the motorbike, which has vastly increased efficiency and enabled her to travel to other markets farther away. While Esnala works, her two children are in a classroom. It brings her great joy to know that her kids are getting an education. There was a time when school seemed out of the question. Esnala’s thriving business was once on the brink of collapse. Early on, she couldn’t afford to buy enough chicks along with an adequate supply of animal feed and medicine. Inconsistent income made it difficult for Esnala to provide for her kids, who were also forced to miss school. She recalls, “I had dreams of running a big poultry business, but without financial support, I couldn’t grow. My children looked up to me, but I felt limited and discouraged.” Nonetheless, Esnala entrusted her efforts to God, and has seen Him provide. Her favorite verse is Proverbs 16:3 “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.” (ESV)
A loan and training through Cross International’s microfinance program led to remarkable growth in her poultry business and allowed her to expand into crop production as a secondary source of income. She now has a goal of creating job opportunities for other women in her community.
