What a year that was! CRJ Services grew by 32% last year on the back of 23% growth the previous year. We have such a fantastic team at CRJ Services which has worked so hard to achieve this, it makes me feel proud to be part of this fantastic achievement. It is also pleasing to see every area of the business growing, from hires, sales, parts and service. I’m looking forward to even greater achievements as we continue to integrate JENZ into our business, which is already proving a massive success. We are also expanding our team, adding 16 new colleagues into the business within the past 12 months across all departments, so that we can continue to provide our high levels of service. We will be looking to recruit and retain for further new positions this year as well. We continue to be a privately owned business where we are not too small so that we don’t have the ability to provide a wide range of services and not too large so that we lose touch with our customers’ requirements. It is vitally important to us that we maintain our high standards throughout and that we achieve our goal of being the best provider of recycling equipment in the UK and Ireland. We are all facing difficult trading conditions, with the war in Ukraine creating steel shortages and price increases. It’s really pleasing that continual investment in our hire fleet and service means we can still support our customers if they are facing difficulty in sourcing new machines. As we operate the largest fleet of hire machines in the UK and Ireland we are able to bridge the sourcing gap that our customers may have. We added JENZ GmbH to our portfolio in February and it’s been a real whirl wind, with huge demand for this well-respected brand. Our team has really enjoyed being able to visit existing JENZ customers and ensuring a smooth transition for the support of their machinery. The CRJ Parts division has also been hard at work, introducing the JENZ parts product lines to our offering, guaranteeing the availability of all parts to keep our customers’ operations running smoothly. It is great to see industry events such as Scotplant returning, where we can interact and meet people, and it’s something that we’ve really missed over the last couple of years. We will be exhibiting for the first time at the APF show in September, where we will be demonstrating the JENZ shredders and chippers, something that we are all looking forward to and hopefully we will see you there. We’ve made some huge achievements over the past 12 months and we will be making even more over the coming year, but we wouldn’t have been able to do this without the support of all the stakeholders in the business, customers, suppliers and colleagues. I would like to thank you all for your support and I look forward to continuing this success over the coming year!

Andrew Clarkson CRJ Services Ltd

Scotplant Review CRJ Services returned to The Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh on the 22nd and 23rd of April for Scotplant 2022. Having been postponed due to Covid-19, it was great to get back to the show again after exhibiting in 2018. Scotland is a key market for CRJ Services, with long established relationships with many recycling and waste management companies across the country. With the addition of the JENZ GmbH dealership to our sales portfolio, we look to further cement our presence in Scotland, and enhance our offering to the forestry sector with the JENZ range of highspeed shredders and chippers. We had two great days of meeting customers old and new, showing off some of our equipment and spare parts offering. We also had a hog-roast both days, which went down a storm with visitors. On our stand, we had the JENZ BA916 high-speed shredder, which was a very popular machine. The machine has a pivoting outfeed conveyor, which allows direct access to the shredding chamber and engine bay, allowing visitors to get up close and understand the benefits of the shredder.

The ever-popular HAAS TYRON 2000XL also made an appearance on our stand and offered customer the chance to see all the enhanced benefits of the secondgeneration machine, including but not limited to, ground level access to the shredding shafts for hardfacing and maintenance. The TYRON we had on the stand left the show and was delivered straight to its new home at Enva Ltd Scotland.

Aside from the mobile equipment on show, we also had a range of our spare and wear parts, on display. It was great to have constructive conversations with new and existing customers on how we can further support them with their parts requirements for some of the industry’s leading equipment. We would like to thank everyone who came to see us, and we look forward to getting back to Scotplant in 2024!

Finally, we showcased the all-new tracked Bruce BWB120 water bath. CRJ Services had worked closely with Bruce Engineering to develop the existing skid mounted water bath model into a tracked version, that offers users a completely mobile material washing solution. This was the first opportunity for customers to see the new machine in the flesh, which generated a lot of interest from visitors looking to either hire or purchase the machine.

Revisit to Mill Farm Recycling’s Static HAAS Wood Recycling Plant In April 2019 CRJ Services, in partnership with HAAS Recycling Systems GmbH, commissioned a full turn-key wood recycling plant at Mill Farm Recycling Ltd. After three years of successful operation, we return to speak with Will Ainsworth – Partner at Mill Farm Recycling to see how the plant has been performing.

Following several years processing their biomass product with a series of mobile shredders and screeners, Mill Farm required a static wood recycling plant that could accommodate their increased processing volumes and deliver an improved finished product in a range of specifications. In collaboration with CRJ Services, and following extensive planning and development, HAAS designed and installed a bespoke static wood recycling plant. The plant comprises a star-screen, hammermill, eddy current separator, oscillating deck screen and a series of chain conveyors that transport and dispense the finished products into storage bays. The new plant is currently processing approximately 8,000 tonnes a year of grade A wood. Throughput is circ. 30 tonnes per hour dependant on the moisture content for the wood. Commissioned in April 2019, the plant has now been successfully operating for three years. We took this opportunity to visit Will Ainsworth – Partner at Mill Farm Recycling to get his thoughts on the performance of the plant and discuss how this has improved their operation. “The plant has performed well with good throughput. The plant is delivering 120% increase in production compared to our mobile setup. Our mobile plant required to be blown

down and fuelled up daily which doesn’t sound like a big issue, but it can sometimes take over an hour every day out of your production time, we currently blow down our plant once a week which takes approximately a couple of hours.” With their mobile setup, producing different product specifications involved the exchange of trommel drums and screening baskets within their shredders and screeners. A process that has been made easier with their new plant. Will stated, “The access to the hammermill hammers and screen is very quick and easy. Changing screens within the oscillating screen takes less than 5 minutes to change each section, and we are able to create our 3 product sizes and still screen for oversize at the same time.” One of the defining features of the new plant is the longevity of the wear parts, and ease of maintenance. “The part we have changed the most frequently is the dust seals around the chip screen which we change approx. every 9 months. Apart from that the plant is fairly low maintenance with the only wear parts changed to date being 1 full set of hammers and a row of 5 milling plates for the hammer mill. We have however hard faced the plates and will use them again.

We have been very impressed with the HAAS plant which has been very reliable and has therefore required very little input from the manufacturer. CRJ Services are always available when we need to get hold them, and any issues are sorted quickly either with HAAS or by CRJ’s staff.” Will Ainsworth Partner at Mill Farm Recycling Ltd

We do renew the hard facing on the milling bed and the screen about once every 2 months. We bought a quantity of parts when we purchased the plant, this has meant that we have most of the required parts on the floor ready which has reduced downtime to a minimum.” The HAAS plant also includes a dust extraction system which removes dust from various sections of the plant, “The dust extraction system reduces the dust around the plant and building to a minimum which is great for not only the working conditions, but fire safety too.” Aside from the increase in production rates, the new static plant has also decreased energy consumption compared to their mobile plant. Being electrically driven, the plant has also reduced Mill Farms reliance on diesel, an aspect that has become very economical with the recent rise in fuel costs. www.crjservices.co.uk 5

Terry Martin Workshop Foreman In this quarter’s edition of Circular, we are starting what will be a recurring feature - Employee Showcase. This feature will highlight a different team member from our various departments, getting to know them and the role they hold at CRJ Services. Our first Employee Showcase will be on Terry Martin, our Workshop Foreman. Terry joined CRJ Services as a Heavy Plant Mechanic in 2008 and has since progressed through various roles to his current position of Workshop Foreman. Before joining CRJ Services, Terry completed an apprenticeship in Plant Engineering at Michelin Tyres, regarded as one of the most prestigious engineering apprenticeships in the country. Following his apprenticeship, he held junior engineering positions at Michelin over 12 years before joining Allied Bakeries where he quickly became a Senior Plant Engineer. In 2008, following a recommendation from his brother Gary Martin, who is a Driver and Operator at CRJ Services, Terry applied for a position within the CRJ Services workshop. Terry quickly showed his engineering prowess, and became a key member of the workshop team, gaining invaluable knowledge of our machinery and industry along the way.

As part of his role as Workshop Forman, Terry is responsible for managing our workshop teams to ensure our recycling & material processing equipment is maintained and repaired to the highest standard in an efficient and safe manner. With CRJ Services having experienced significant, sustained growth over the years, Terry is tasked with maximising the efficiency of the workshop. Ensuring incoming machines are inspected and maintained in a timely manner, maximising the availability of equipment for our hire desk to offer our customers. Terry also heads up the practical element of the CRJ Services Apprenticeship Program. Having entered the profession through an apprenticeship himself, Terry really values the process, and is keen to pass on his knowledge to the incoming engineering talent at CRJ Services. Outside of work, Terry continues his passion for engineering and our machinery, and has even created a working model of one of our hire fleet shredders – the Doppstadt DW3060!

Why did you want to head up the apprenticeship program? When we first started the apprenticeship program, many apprentices moved on once they had completed the course, which was disappointing. I had a great experience with my apprenticeship, and I wanted to not only impart my own knowledge to them, but to structure the program in such a way that would see them develop into fully fledged members of our team and retain their skills once they had completed their studies. What is your favourite aspect of your role at CRJ Services? There are many aspects on my role I enjoy, including the involvement I have with the apprentices. However, it is the challenges and diversity of my role that I enjoy the most. No two days are the ever the same. What is your favourite machine to work on? They all have their good and bad points, so it’s hard to pick a particular machine. I do like a challenge though, so I would say it’s the bespoke modifications to machines that we undertake to fit specific requirements of our customers. What passions do you have outside of work? I love my motorbikes – Classic British bikes in particular. I have 7 of them at the moment, but always room for some additions. I also enjoy my rock music and real ale. Favourite bands being Queen, Rush and Black Sabbath. I was a member of the real ale and rock society at Stoke Polytechnic during my studies… good times. I was also on Robot Wars, teaming up with my son, which was great.

What do you consider the biggest change you have seen in your time at CRJ Services? CRJ Services has grown massively in my time here. When I started, we had 8-10 machines in the hire fleet, and I think we had just bought our 6th screener. We now have over 100 machines in the fleet, and over 50 screeners. What are the main factors in the longevity of your career with CRJ Services? I enjoy what I do, and the people I work with. As mentioned, we have grown significantly in my time here, and it has been very exciting to be a part of this journey, so long may it continue. What three words would you pick to describe CRJ Services? Hmm, I would have to go with four words… NEVER A DULL MOMENT! If you could pick an actor to play you in a movie of your life, who would it be? …Cameron Diaz

Machinery Showcase Chippers

JENZ GmbH is a German manufacturer with over 100 years experience in developing machinery for the recycling of timber, biomass, and green waste. Offering a comprehensive range of mobile and stationary high-speed shredders and chippers, JENZ is the benchmark when it comes to innovation and quality in this field. Their focus on the longevity, and economical running costs of their equipment sets them apart from other manufacturers, and their loyal customer base is a testament to their quality and global reputation.

Chipper Trucks JENZ chipper trucks come in two sizes, the HEM583R and HEM593R, and come equipped with a mounted loading crane, and rotating outfeed blower. These models are available with two cabin options, the standard HGV cabin, and the Cobra cabin. The standard HGV cabin is fixed in place and has two seats, one for driving and a second in the reverse position for operating the chipper. The Cobra cabin has a single seat, with the cabin rotating 180 degrees so that you can operate the chipper and drive the truck from a single seated position. JENZ has introduced a hybrid chipper truck to their range, utilising both an electric motor and diesel engine for power. The hybrid chipper truck reduces the reliance on diesel and offers customers a greener alternative to the standard chipper truck range.

PTO The JENZ PTO range of chippers offers users a compact and cost-effective chipping solution. The HEM Z range comes in four sizes, HEM561Z, HEM583Z, HEM593Z and HEM841Z, offering customers varying infeed sizes, throughput capabilities and power to suit your application. Power is provided via the towing vehicle connector, and ranges from 150kW - 400kW depending on the model. The HEM range of chippers offers easy screen change with various screening baskets available to produce accurate chip sizes. Trailered Chippers The JENZ chipper also comes as a trailered version, offering customers a large draw-in area, for continuous feeding using an external loading machine. The trailer versions can be fitted with either an outfeed belt for stockpiling or a blower chute for loading into a container. The body of the chipper can be rotated for flexible working on both sides of the trailer. Tracked Chippers The JENZ range of chippers also come as a self-propelled tracked version, offering customers full manoeuvrability around site without the need for a towing vehicle. The tracked versions boast large draw-in feed areas, allowing for the processing of bulky material. The chipper can be rotated independently from the tracks to offer customers flexible working on both sides of the machine. The chipped material is then ejected via a rotating blower chute or via a conveyor belt for stockpiling.

High Speeds

BA High Speed Shredders The JENZ BA range of high-speed shredders includes diesel driven mobile machines as well as static electric installations. The mobile range comprises the BA615D, BA916D and BA926D with their power ranging from 306hp - 625hp. The larger BA926D offers a twin-gear drive system allowing the engine power to be switched between 530hp - 625hp, depending on the waste application. The mobile BA range is available as both a hook-lift and tracked version, giving customer flexibility to suit their operational requirements. The static BA range offers customers an electric alternative for their high-speed shredding requirements. Available in two sizes, the BA615E and BA926E with their power ranging from 90kW - 200kW. All BA shredders come equipped with IPS (Impact Protection System) which detects foreign objects and prevents consequential damage. As soon as a foreign object is detected, the clutch of the rotor is disengaged, and the infeed stops and begins to run backwards, liberating the object.

Apprenticeship Showcase CRJ Services is committed to developing talent and offering young people and people looking to retrain the opportunity to learn skills and gain experience in their chosen field. Our apprentices have the opportunity to work towards a qualification, whilst earning, and learn from the talented mentors we have at CRJ Services. Being able to learn in a hands-on environment allows apprentices to put their skills into practice and helps them to gain confidence in a working environment. CRJ Services currently offers apprenticeships in Heavy Plant Mechanics and in Supply Chain Operations, and we have three apprentices progressing through their training.

CRJ Services announces a sponsorship deal with Jockey - Barry McHugh We are delighted to announce a sponsorship deal with Barry McHugh. Barry is a flats jockey from Northern Ireland with over 20 years’ experience, racing at some of the most prestigious horse racing events in the UK and Ireland. Barry will be showcasing the CRJ Services logo on his breeches as he rides throughout the 2022/2023 season. With over 5000 races under his belt, Barry has rode over 450 winners in his career so far with his first win coming onboard Richtee back in 2016 at York. When asked about his most memorable win, Barry said, “I have had a few, but one that stands out the most was a horse called Summer Stands. He was placed in a Group 1 race at Newmarket, and a week later he won the 2-year-old trophy at Redcar, which was a great day.”

Barry comments “My hopes for the future are to stay in one piece and ride as many winners as I can. I’d like to ride 1,000 winners before I retire.” “I would like to say a big thank you to Ben and the CRJ Services team for their sponsorship and support. Damian Casey named in the GAA Team of the Week Following on from his recent inclusion in the GAA Hurling Allstar Team, Damian has now been named in the GAA Team of the Week. His inclusion follows a sterling performance in the Division 3 league final, where his Tyrone team defeated neighbours Armagh. Damian scored 1-10 and has helped Tyrone gain promotion to Division 2 for the first time in their history. Congratulation Damian!

CRJ Services Recognition Awards Following the introduction of a number of new staff benefits, CRJ Services has introduced a recognition award scheme whereby CRJ Services team members can nominate their colleagues who have embodied the company values of putting the customer first, delivering the best, and working as one team. In the first round of awards, our stores team have been recognised for their hard work and dedication throughout the expansion of our parts facility. It has been no mean feat, but they have now successfully moved into the new facility and implemented a range of new processes to streamline the support of both our own fleet of machinery as well as the picking and delivery of parts to our customers.

Gary Martin – Driving CRJ Services forward for over 15 years This month saw one of our longest serving team members Gary Martin pass the milestone of 15 years’ service to CRJ services. Gary joined CRJ Services in 2007 as our first dedicated driver and machine operator. Hundreds of thousands of miles, and countless tonnes of shredding later, Gary is still loving hauling our equipment throughout the UK and Ireland and supporting our high-speed shredding customers with his operator services. “I would like to congratulate Gary on his 15 years of service. Gary has seen a lot of change over his time at CRJ Services and has always risen to the challenge of a growing and diversifying machinery fleet. Gary is also very popular with our shredder hire customers, providing them with a reliable and friendly service when based on site to operate our high-speed shredders. CRJ Services Celebrates International Womens Day International Women’s Day is the worldwide event that celebrates women’s achievements - from the political to the economic, and the social - while calling for gender equality. Supporting and celebrating the women that work here at CRJ Services is a yearround responsibility, however we are proud to put the spotlight on the women who make CRJ Services a success on International Women’s Day.

It is by no means an overstatement that CRJ Services would simply not have experienced the growth and success we have over our 22 years without the women who work across our departments. When Ali Wennell joined back in 2007, she was one of only two women employed by CRJ Services. Fast forward to 2022, and we currently employee 12 women, making up 22% of our workforce.
