Firstly, I would like to wish everyone a prosperous New Year, and I hope that you and your families enjoyed a relaxing and enjoyable festive period. 2021 was a busy and challenging year for us all. We hope that 2022 proves to be a better year for every one of us and normality, as we knew it, continues to reappear into our lives. We have a fantastic team here at CRJ Services and I would like to offer my sincere gratitude, for everyone’s continued dedication and resilience throughout the pandemic Despite the challenges, CRJ Services has experienced an exciting period of growth across all our four divisions, and to facilitate this we have invested significantly in our people, premises and systems. Most notably, in our parts business, we have constructed and fitted out a new 5000sq ft stores facility, which will allow for further growth, whilst servicing the demand we currently have. We have added an additional 17 people across all four divisions to support this growth, whilst improving greatly our existing processes and procedures. Our hire division has passed the milestone of 100 active machines within the fleet. This is a great achievement and offers the opportunity to reflect on what has been an incredible journey for CRJ Services since our first hire, acquired back in 2002. In recent months, our sales division has been showcasing the new hybrid version of the HAAS TYRON 2000XL 2.0 shredder, with a demo tour that has taken us the length of the UK. With the looming removal of the red diesel subsidy, this machine can assist our customers in their transition from diesel driven to electric driven technologies, whilst not compromising the performance of their operations. As a result of the growth experienced within our hire, sales and spare parts divisions, our service, workshop and transport divisions have seen exponential rises in their business activities. Once again, it is thanks to our staff that we have been able to coordinate this upsurge and continue to provide quality levels of service per division. As 2021 closed, a new chapter was opened in the CRJ journey. We were delighted to finalise a dealer agreement with the highly respected and renowned German OEM, JENZ GmbH Maschinen- und Fahrzeugbau, in late December. This further raises our offering and complements our existing portfolio extremely well. We look forward to serving all current and future Jenz customers in the weeks, months and years ahead We will be making further announcements across all social media platforms about how we are going to support this new Dealership over the forthcoming weeks. Lastly, I would like to thank our customers for their continued support. We work in a great industry, with great people, and we look forward to supporting you in 2022; every step of the way.

CRJ Services is announced as the exclusive dealer for JENZ GmbH CRJ Services is excited to announce an exclusive dealership agreement with German machine manufacturer JENZ GmbH Maschinen- und Fahrzeugbau, for the UK and Ireland. The new dealership agreement will commence on the 31st January 2022. JENZ GmbH is a leading manufacturer of high-speed shredders and mobile chippers. The addition of these machines to our sales portfolio will allow us to offer a comprehensive
range of machinery solutions to the forestry, waste management, recycling and biomass industries. CRJ Services looks forward to supporting new and existing JENZ customers with the sale of new and used machinery, spare parts and servicing support. Grays Recycling Services purchases a New HAAS TYRON following supply of Kiverco Plants Grays Recycling Services is a family-run business providing waste services across Fochabers, in the Scottish Highlands. Starting out as a metal recycling business in 2004, GRS has since expanded their service offerings to include skip hire and commercial trade waste services. GRS uses a range of processes to recycle and extract value from their incoming waste streams. A large percentage of their waste is generated through their skip hire and commercial waste services. This waste contains various valuable materials that can be reclaimed through their picking station leaving a clean aggregate product. Late 2017, GRS contacted CRJ Services for a solution that would clean up their trommel fine material, removing any metal, and any other material that would negatively affect the ‘Loss of Ignition’ (LOI)* testing results. After taking GRS personnel to various sites in London, along with Kiverco personnel, to showcase the Kiverco Stand Alone Fines Processing Systems, GRS bought such a system from CRJ Services which was installed in June 2018. This system comprises of a Hopper which -40mm Trommel Fines is fed into, an incline belt and over band magnet (removing ferrous material), a Spaleck single deck Flip Flow screen, removing -10mm material. The <10mm fraction is sent to landfill with a 6 – 8 percent LOI, qualifying it for the lower rate of tax. The 10 – 40mm light fraction is sent as an RDF material to a waste to energy plant, with the heavy fraction being sold as a recycled aggregate product. The 10 – 40mm heavy material is made up of aggregates which are further processed onsite. Following the successful commissioning of their fines clean up plant, GRS returned to CRJ Services in 2019, looking to replace their existing diesel, mobile trommel with an electric static solution. This transition to an electric trommel forms part of GRS’ wider agenda of making their processes more sustainable and environmentally friendly. CRJ Services suggested the Kiverco 615 Trommel with integrated Hopper design, which is robust enough to deal with their abrasive commercial and skip waste. The static trommel was incorporated

into their existing plant; a Bruce 5 bay double sided Picking Station with over band magnet in August 2019. The Kiverco Trommel screens out the <40mm product, which is ejected from the building, allowing for easy transfer to their Kiverco fines clean up plant. The >40mm oversize material is then fed onto their existing Bruce picking station for the removal of commodities and metals Having built a great relationship across two successful projects, GRS once again returned to CRJ Services for a third time in 2021, requiring a versatile mobile shredder to replace their aging Powerscreen Powershredder 1800. “It has been a pleasure to deal with Grays Recycling over the years. Having worked with them for over 6 years, it has been great to witness their growth, and to be able to supply quality equipment to meet their requirements. Waste operators now have to have samples of their waste products tested to ensure they are paying the correct amount of landfill tax. Samples of waste ‘fines’ must be tested in a laboratory to determine the LOI at 440 °C, under the Landfill Tax (Qualifying Fines) (No. 2) Order 2015. (Source HMRC) The amount of weight loss from the sample after incineration must be less than 10%, to allow the fines to qualify for a lower taxable rate.
As GRS is located in a remote part of the UK, they must ensure their lorries are at maximum weight in order to efficiently transfer their waste to waste to energy plants. To reach the maximum weight in their lorries, the material must be shredded down to allow for a more compact load. This reduces the number of miles driven and in turn reduces their carbon footprint. As GRS is a multi-waste processor, the required shredder needed to be able to produce a consistent particle size across various materials to meet the required specification of the waste to energy plants. CRJ Services suggested the HAAS TYRON and brought the TYRON 2000XL 2.0 to site for a demonstration.

The HAAS TYRON is the shredder of choice for Biffa Tipton
Biffa has over 100 years of experience in handling waste and recycling materials and has built up a reputation for excellence in the waste management sector. As such Biffa operates a network of depots throughout the UK, enabling over 95% of UK postcodes to be serviced. Alongside its material recycling facilities, Biffa also operates a number of ‘transfer stations’ which act as temporary storage for municipal solid waste on its journey to larger waste processing facilities. To reduce onward transport costs and increase efficiencies, Biffa shred down their waste at the transfer stations to a sub 300mm product. This increases the ease of transport, but also prepares the waste product for further processing at the material recycling facility.
At its Tipton transfer station in Birmingham, Biffa receives and shreds over 1,500 tonnes of MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) per week. They required a versatile slow-speed shredder capable of dealing with the variety of waste materials received by the transfer station. The shredder needed to be able to shred at a minimum of 30tph consistently, for 50 hours a week, in order to meet their tonnage requirements. Therefore, the uptime of the machine and the backup support, provided by CRJ Services, was and is of paramount importance to ensure their targets are met. Having dealt with CRJ Services for over 20 years, Brian Green – Operations Support Manager at Biffa Tipton approached CRJ Services for a hire solution. The HAAS TYRON was proposed by CRJ Services as the perfect machine for the job requirements. The TYRON is a mobile, twin-shaft, slow-speed shredder renowned within the waste management sector for its powerful performance, versatility, reliability, and ease of maintenance.

The backup support offered by CRJ Services was also a key factor in the decision to hire the HAAS TYRON. CRJ Services operates an industry-leading backup service, delivered by their team of mobile engineers who are strategically placed around the UK
and Ireland. This ensures CRJ Services can react fast to customers’ needs in the event of a breakdown or service requirement. CRJ Services also runs the ‘swing program’ which is a unique service offered by CRJ Services. This program sees long term shredder hire units replaced with an identical machine at intervals throughout the hire. This enables the first machine to be taken away to be serviced and hard-faced off site. As a result, operators experience limited disruption and downtime, whilst ensuring the shredder is performing at its optimum for the duration of the hire. The TYRON was delivered to site and handover training was provided to the Biffa team on both the safe operation and daily maintenance checks of the shredder. Following a successful period of hire, CRJ Services visited the Tipton site to capture some footage of the shredder in action, and to ensure Brian and his team were happy with its performance. “We have dealt with CRJ Services for over 20 years. CRJ Services Hit Milestone of 100 Hire Fleet Machines In the last edition of Circular, we celebrated the sale of the 100th HAAS TYRON into the UK and Ireland, and we have now hit another machinery milestone. CRJ Services has come a long way since our first hire of a Doppstadt AK430, to Manchester Waste, back in 2002. Millions of tonnes of waste processed later, and CRJ Services is celebrating adding the 100th active machine to our hire fleet. The CRJ Services Hire fleet came into existence 20 years ago when its primary business was processing green waste for local authorities. We began hiring out our processing machinery during the green waste off season, marking the beginning of the CRJ Services Hire fleet. As we won more green waste processing contracts, the fleet of machinery grew to a size where the hiring out of the machinery was becoming more popular and overtook the green waste processing as our main business activity.

CRJ Services Expands its Stores to Meet Parts Demand Thanks to the growth we have seen in the CRJ Parts division, we have expanded our stores capacity to 5000 sq. ft, three times the size of the previous facility. Over recent years, CRJ Services has experienced sustained growth of both our hire and parts business. Our hire fleet has recently reached 100 machines, and with the addition of water baths, conveyors and new generation machines to the fleet, the space requirement to house these spare and wear parts has grown. Aside from the increased range of machinery in our fleet, we have also seen significant growth in our part sales, and in the product lines we stock. The new product lines allow us to further support our customers with a more comprehensive parts offering to suit many of the top OEM brands of recycling and waste management machinery. We now offer our customers a range of belts, breaker bars, brushes, counter combs, end roller magnets, filter kits, gates, hammers, lubrication elements, motors, overband magnets, remote controls, rollers, shredding blades, shredding shafts, teeth and trommel drums. The recent expansion has required additional investment in lifting and picking equipment. CRJ Services has purchased a new Aisle Master forklift truck, and a LLOP electric order
picker to assist the stores team in managing the new stores capacity. Investing in new green technology is always at the forefront of our strategy, and these new purchases continue this trend. In addition to the new facility, we have expanded our stores team. As well as hiring additional stores assistants and administrators, we are now also offering apprenticeship positions. These new positions will help our parts division to operate more efficiently, helping our engineers to turnaround machines quickly for our hire fleet, and speeding up the delivery of parts to our customers. It also helps provide employment and knowledge development within our area. Not only does this help provide employment opportunities, the scheme enables a pathway for knowledge and skills development within the business. This extensive investment has been made to expand the scope of our offering and to improve our service levels for our customers. Importantly it also positions our Parts division with scope to expand, in line with CRJ Services overall growth strategy.

Aintree Racecourse Source CRJ Services Shredder for Grand National Spruce Shredding
The Jockey Club, who own 15 racecourses throughout the UK, has brought in CRJ Services to shred the old spruce that has been used to top the fences of the past few Grand Nationals at Aintree Racecourse. The spruce is used to give the horses and jockeys some leniency when clearing the fences at the world famous Grand National. As this material is replaced each year, and due to the sheer number of fences used within the race, the Jockey Club had built up a large collection of waste brash that could be shredded and utilised as mulch across the racecourse. Mark Aynsley – Head Groundsman at Aintree Racecourse approached CRJ Services for a solution after passing one of our shredders on the M6. Following a visit to our website, Mark contacted CRJ Services to discuss his requirement, and the AK565 was chosen as the suitable machine for the job. Our high-speed shredders can be hired with an operator, which is ideal for customers who wouldn’t necessarily have experience in operating this type of machinery, such as The Jockey Club. We operate several Doppstadt high-speed shredders in our fleet which can be utilised for an array of volume reduction applications. To complement the shredders, we have a range of gates from 40 - 300mm, that can be used to produce the exact particle size required.
During the hire, CRJ Services’s Tom McLaren went to visit Mark Aynsley to see how the shredder was performing, and to capture footage of the shredder in action, which can be seen via the QR code below. “The service we have received from CRJ Services has been excellent and very efficient. CRJ Services is pleased to announce the expansion of our sales team coverage across the Southeast of England with the introduction of Ted Hobden as our new Area Sales Manager. Ted will be covering Greater London, Essex, Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire. In this role Ted will be responsible for expanding the company’s customer base and increasing our engagement with our existing customers in this area. Before joining CRJ Services, Ted worked in the wastewater industry, where he was responsible for recycling over 80,000 tonnes per year of sludge to land. Ted also has a passion for health and safety, which is very admirable, and we are pleased to add another health and safety champion to our team.

New CRJ Hire Fleet Unit Cleans Up Aggregate at Scott Bros Ltd Scott Bros bring in a Bruce (BWB) Water Bath from CRJ Services to clean up their mid-sized aggregate material. CRJ Services, who has recently introduced Bruce Engineering material washing solutions to our sales portfolio, have added 4 Bruce (BWB) Water Baths to our growing hire fleet. The Bruce Water Bath is a light-waste floatation system that maximises the recovery of recyclable materials from dirty or contaminated material streams. Middlesbrough-based Scott Bros offers a range of services, including recycling soil and aggregates which they then sell back into the construction and domestic markets. Scott Bros receives construction and demolition waste via their skip hire service. This material is screened into three fractions; the sub 10mm fine fraction is removed via a 3-waysplit deck screener. The 10 – 50mm material is screened and deposited into the Bruce BWB Water Bath, with the oversize then fed onto a picking station where recyclables and commodities are handpicked.

The 10 - 50mm material is then fed and agitated through the water bath, allowing for light / organic material to float to the top. The light material is ejected, leaving a clean aggregate product that is stockpiled through the front outfeed conveyor. The resulting clean aggregate product is processed further through Scott Bros’ plant to be finished into sized and graded aggregate, ready for sale. CRJ Services’s Tom McLaren visited Scott Bros to film the new water bath in action and get feedback from Scott Bros site manager Gesrid Desira. “It is great to see one of the new Bruce Water Baths doing an excellent job cleaning Scott Bros aggregate material. CRJ Services donates to three charities this Christmas It is tradition at CRJ Services that in lieu of sending corporate gifts at Christmas, we use this money alternatively to donate to worthy causes. As much as Christmas can be a time for joy and happiness, for many; others can have their very particular strife’s and troubles magnified at this time of year. We asked our staff to shortlist a selection of charities close to their hearts. As a team, we then voted to decide which three charities to support. This year, following many worthy suggestions, CRJ Services has chosen to support; Shelter UK, Dementia UK and Papyrus with donations of £1,000 each.

The new Hybrid HAAS TYRON goes on tour The HAAS TYRON is the leading slow speed waste shredder, with over 100 machines sold into the UK and Irish markets to date. With the scrapping of the red diesel subsidy in April 2022 along with increasing environmental pressures to operate in a more sustainable manner, the team at HAAS has successfully converted the ever-popular HAAS TYRON 2000XL 2.0 into an electric driven machine. The new Hybrid machine utilises a small 43kW engine to power its tracks, allowing for easy moveability around site. The 280kW electric motor then powers the rest of the machine, including the shredding shafts. This enables the Hybrid machine to operate with no exhaust emissions whilst shredding. The Hybrid machines benefit from all of the upgraded features seen on the diesel-powered TYRON 2000XL 2.0. “There has been a lot of interest in the Hybrid TYRON. HAAS has done an excellent job of converting the diesel-powered TYRON to an electrically driven machine, maintaining its impressive shredding performance.
