How to Increase Trommel Throughput Without Buying a Bigger Machine
Small Changes, Big Results Many operators assume increasing production means investing in a larger trommel. However, in many cases, existing machines aren’t operating at their full potential. Small operational improvements can deliver significant gains in throughput, product quality and running costs without the need for additional capital investment. Every trommel is designed to perform efficiently when the machine, material and operator are working together. Factors such as machine condition, preventative maintenance, operator experience and daily working practices all have a direct impact on performance. Taking the time to assess these areas can often unlock additional capacity that’s already there.
At CRJ Services, we work with operators across the UK to maximise the performance of all leading trommel brands, including Pronar, Doppstadt and Kentek. Whether you’re processing compost, soils, aggregates, biomass or waste, our technical knowledge and handson experience help customers achieve more from the equipment they already own. Maximise Your Machine’s Performance Getting the best from a trommel isn’t just about the machine itself - it’s about having the right support behind it. Regular servicing, preventative maintenance and operator training all play a key role in reducing downtime, extending component life and maintaining consistent production throughout the year. Our experienced service engineers and product specialists work alongside customers to identify opportunities for improvement, helping increase productivity while lowering operating costs. From routine servicing and replacement parts to machine inspections and operator training, we’re committed to keeping your equipment performing at its best.

Optimise Drum Speed
Drum speed directly affects screening efficiency. Too slow and fines won’t separate effectively; too fast and material can be carried around the drum, reducing screening performance.
Adjust drum speed based on material type, moisture levels, screen size and feed volume. If material appears to be riding the drum instead of tumbling, it’s time to review your settings.
34 Maintain a Consistent Feed
Inconsistent loading is one of the biggest causes of poor performance. Large surges overload the screen, reducing separation and increasing contamination. A steady feed improves throughput, product quality, reduces wear and lowers fuel consumption.
Manage Material Moisture
Wet materials such as compost, soil and green waste can blind screen apertures and reduce output.
5
After rainfall, consider reducing feed rates, adjusting drum speed or changing screen configurations before assuming there’s a mechanical issue.
Choose the Right Screen
The correct screen aperture is essential. Screens that are too small restrict throughput, while oversized apertures can reduce product quality. Review your screen setup regularly, as changing materials and seasonal conditions often require different configurations.
Improve Loading Techniques
Loader operation has a major influence on trommel performance. Overfeeding, uneven loading and introducing oversized material all reduce efficiency.
Training operators to maintain a consistent material flow can deliver noticeable productivity gains.
Operator knowledge can make a real difference to machine performance, throughput and efficiency. If you want to improve your team’s skills and get more from your equipment, CRJ can help. A Landmark Wash Plant for Thorncliffe Building Supplies Established in 1987, Thorncliffe Building Supplies is one of the largest independent builders’ merchants in North Wales and the North West of England. Alongside supplying building materials, plant hire and waste management services, the company operates its own recycling facilities, continually investing in modern processing technology to improve efficiency, sustainability and the quality of its recycled aggregate products. To expand its processing capabilities, Thorncliffe invested in a new aggregate washing facility capable of producing high-quality aggregates and sands while delivering efficient wastewater management. To deliver the project, Thorncliffe partnered with CRJ Services, Bruce Engineering and Tecnoidea to design, supply, install and commission a complete turnkey aggregate washing solution. Now fully operational, the site combines highperformance aggregate washing with advanced water treatment technology, creating an integrated system built for reliability and longterm performance. The installation is one of the largest wash plant projects completed by CRJ Services in recent years. Designed Around Efficient Aggregate Processing At the heart of the installation is a Bruce Engineering wash plant designed to maximise production while maintaining excellent material quality. Material first passes through the Bruce Electric Scalper before entering the Bruce BWR wash plant and BWS sand plant, where aggregates are washed, classified and recovered into consistent, high-quality end products. The plant processes up to 80 tonnes of material per hour, producing up to 70 tonnes of saleable products. An extensive conveyor network, including a 38-metre lattice conveyor, radial stockpile conveyors and transfer conveyors, optimises material flow and reduces handling. Purposebuilt walkways, access platforms and a central control cabin provide safe maintenance access and efficient operation.
Integrated Water Treatment A key element of the installation is the Tecnoidea water clarification system, which forms an integral part of the washing process. Process water is clarified to remove suspended solids before sludge is transferred to an automated filter press, producing a dewatered filter cake for easier handling. The recovered water is then returned to the washing circuit, allowing around 90% of process water to be recycled and reducing fresh water consumption by approximately 90%. The result is a closed-loop water management system that supports continuous production while improving resource efficiency. Delivering a Major Installation The project was installed in carefully planned phases, with the Bruce Engineering wash plant and Tecnoidea water treatment equipment assembled progressively as the build advanced. Several major crane lifts, ranging from 70 to 220 tonnes, were required, including the installation of the 38-metre lattice conveyor. Once mechanical installation was complete, electrical systems, hydraulics, pipework and water treatment infrastructure were connected before commissioning and final testing ensured the plant was ready for production. From Installation to Production Now fully operational, the Bruce Engineering wash plant and Tecnoidea water treatment system work together to produce washed aggregates while continuously recovering and recycling process water. As a fully electric installation, the plant complements Thorncliffe Building Supplies’ investment in on-site solar generation, helping improve overall resource efficiency. The project demonstrates how modern washing technology and advanced water treatment can combine to deliver consistent product quality, efficient resource management and reliable dayto-day operation.

We fully understand that they have a choice of shredder suppliers to choose from and we are grateful that we were given fair opportunity to showcase our machinery, facilities, and ourselves, in order to help them with their decision.” Ben McQuaid, Director – CRJ
18
BWS Takes Delivery of HAAS TYRON QC CRJ has supplied a HAAS TYRON 2000 XL QC to BWS Waste Management in Leeds, marking the start of a new working relationship with the business. The investment was driven by the need for minimising maintenance downtime and improving long term operational efficiency. Built for Uptime in Demanding Environments BWS Waste Management is a Leeds-based waste management business providing reliable, high-throughput solutions for commercial and industrial customers across the region. Operating in a demanding environment where uptime, consistency, and operational efficiency are critical, BWS continues to invest in equipment that supports long-term performance while keeping disruption on site to a minimum. As material volumes increase and processing demands evolve, BWS identified the need for a heavy-duty shredder capable of handling tough applications while remaining serviceable and dependable over its working life. High-throughput waste processing places significant wear on shredding components. Traditionally, major maintenance tasks such as shaft changes or chamber work have meant extended downtime, and lost production. Supporting a New Customer Partnership As a new customer, BWS worked closely with CRJ throughout the supply and commissioning process. From specification through to installation, the focus was on ensuring the machine was set up to deliver real, day-to-day benefits on site. We look to continue delivering this value through efficient servicing and long term support. The HAAS TYRON 2000 XL Quick Change is now fully integrated into BWS’s operations, providing the reliability and performance needed to support their high demand waste processing activities. “The demo machine came in, and I ended up keeping it on hire until our own machine reached the yard. It proved its value straight away. We were further impressed when we went to see CRJ’s facilities and infrastructure at their HQ in
Cheshire, following the demonstration.” States Jack Woodhead, Director - BWS Waste Management What Quick Change Means on Site The Quick Change system is a maintenance focused solution designed to dramatically reduce the time required for planned servicing. At the heart of the system is the complete separation of the shredding unit from the drive section. This allows technicians to work on wear components without disturbing sensitive elements such as bearings, hydraulics, or gearboxes. For BWS Waste Management, this delivers: • Significantly reduced maintenance downtime. • Simpler, safer access to wear parts. • More predictable service scheduling. Higher overall machine availability The result is a machine that remains productive throughout the working day, even as site demands change. Jack believes “The Quick Change system allows us to reduce downtime significantly, which is vital on site given the throughput we’re working with. Being able to adapt the machine quickly keeps production flowing and makes a real difference day to day.” Designed To Keep Sites Running The HAAS TYRON 2000 XL QC system has been designed to challenge that expectation. Rather than accepting long service interruptions as standard, the QC system introduces a modular approach that allows critical wear components to be accessed or exchanged quickly, safely, and efficiently. By reducing the impact of maintenance on production, the HAAS TYRON 2000 XL QC system helps operators stay productive, control costs, and plan servicing with confidence. If you are interested in learning more about the HAAS Quick Change and how it can benefit your site, call us on 07808 282750

Engineer Insight: Why Hardfacing Your Shafts Shouldn’t Be Overlooked When it comes to keeping recycling machinery performing at its best, preventative maintenance plays a huge role. However, one area we often see overlooked is the condition of the shafts and more specifically, the importance of regular hardfacing. As engineers working closely with customers across the UK, we see first-hand how the smallest signs of wear can gradually impact machine performance. Hardfacing your shafts is not just a repair job; it is an essential part of maintaining the efficiency, reliability and lifespan of your equipment.
Why shaft wear matters Deon , Head of Engineering, explains: “The shafts are one of the hardest-working components within these machines. They are constantly exposed to abrasive materials and thousands of hours of processing, so wear is inevitable. The key is managing that wear before it starts affecting how the machine performs.” As shafts wear, their profile gradually changes, reducing the machine’s ability to grip and process material effectively. This can lead to changes in material size, reduced throughput, inconsistent processing and increased strain on other components. “A machine might still be running, but that doesn’t always mean it is operating at its best. We often find that performance issues can be linked back to components that have gradually worn over time.” - Deon
20
The importance of preventative hardfacing Hardfacing involves applying a wear-resistant layer back onto the shaft surface, restoring the working profile and helping protect the shaft against further wear.
Our advice from the workshop Every machine and application is different. The rate of wear will depend on factors such as the materials being processed, operating hours and working conditions.
Jacob, Mobile Welder, explains: “A lot of customers think hardfacing is something that only needs doing once there is a major issue, but the best results come from being proactive. Carrying out this work before the shafts become excessively worn helps maintain the machine’s performance and prevents more costly repairs further down the line.”
“Our biggest piece of advice is to include shaft inspections as part of your regular maintenance routine. It is much easier to plan preventative work than deal with reduced production or unexpected downtime.” - Deon
By keeping on top of hardfacing, operators can help: • Maintain consistent material grip and processing .. performance. • Reduce unnecessary stress on other components. • Extend the working life of key machine parts. • Minimise unexpected downtime. • Protect the original performance of the machine.
At CRJ, our engineering team works with customers to assess machine condition, identify potential issues and carry out the maintenance required to keep equipment operating at maximum efficiency. If you’re unsure whether your shafts require attention, speak to our service team for advice on service@crjservices.co.uk or call us on 01565 723886.

That’s why we’ve invested in a new 105kWp solar panel installation, marking another important step in our long-term sustainability journey.
The system is expected to generate more than 2.3 million kWh of renewable electricity over the next 25 years, significantly reducing our reliance on grid electricity and lowering the carbon emissions associated with our day-to-day operations. By producing clean energy on-site, we’re creating amore efficient and resilient way to power our business. Making Better Use of Energy The installation has been designed around how we use electricity, ensuring maximum efficiency. Around 63% of the energy generated will be used directly on-site to power our operations, while the remaining electricity will be exported back to the grid, helping to support the wider use of renewable energy across the UK. By generating a large proportion of our own electricity, we’re also reducing our dependence on

the national grid at a time when energy demand continues to grow. This provides greater longterm resilience for the business while ensuring more of our daily operations are powered by clean, renewable energy. The investment also helps future-proof our operations against rising energy costs while supporting a more sustainable way of working. By producing clean electricity where it is needed most, we’re reducing waste, improving energy efficiency and creating long-term environmental and operational benefits for the business. Looking Ahead This investment is about more than reducing energy costs. It demonstrates our commitment to lowering emissions, improving operational efficiency and making practical investments that benefit both our business and the environment.
As we continue to grow, we’ll keep looking for new ways to reduce our environmental impact and strengthen our sustainability credentials. Our solar installation is another important milestone in that journey, helping to build a more sustainable future for CRJ, our customers and the industries we serve.
CRJ Expands Sustainability with New EV Charging
As part of our ongoing commitment to sustainability, CRJ Services has installed three new electric vehicle (EV) charging points at our headquarters. The new facilities provide convenient charging for employees, customers and visitors, supporting the growing transition towards cleaner, low-emission transport.
Supporting Sustainable Travel
Looking Ahead The installation of the new charging points reflects CRJ’s practical approach to sustainability, investing in things that deliver long-term environmental benefits while improving our facilities for staff and visitors.
Electric vehicles are playing an increasingly important role in reducing carbon emissions, and providing accessible charging infrastructure is another step in helping to create a more sustainable workplace. Whether visiting our site or charging during the working day, the new chargers make it easier to choose electric travel. The installation complements CRJ’s wider sustainability initiatives, helping to reduce the environmental impact of our operations while supporting the changing needs of our workforce and customers. As electric vehicle adoption continues to grow, investing in charging infrastructure ensures we’re ready to support the future of transport.
As Simon Heywood, QSHE Compliance Manager at CRJ Services, explains: “Sustainability is at the heart of how CRJ operates. As we work towards Net Zero, the installation of these EV chargers provides practical support in providing cleaner transport for staff, customers and visitors.” Together with investments in renewable energy and ongoing improvements across the business, the new EV charging points are another important step in reducing our environmental impact and building a more sustainable future.
