The Cristo Rey Institute (CRI) was established in March 2017 through a Pontifical Decree. CRI is a Public Juridic Person within the canon law of the Catholic Church. CRI’s purpose is to sponsor Catholic schools that are members of the Cristo Rey Network when a religious order or congregation is not available to sponsor a new Cristo Rey high school. As a Public Juridic Person, the CRI operates independently of the Cristo Rey Network and is recognized by the Catholic Church as able to certify that the Institute’s sponsored Cristo Rey schools are “Catholic” and in good standing.
The CRI offers Cristo Rey robust support for its Catholic mission of serving families who would not otherwise have access to a quality, Catholic, college and career preparatory experience.

Dear Friends,
Two years ago, we recruited our founding class of 69 students to a former elementary school with nothing more than a promise and a PowerPoint. We asked families to trust us—that a Catholic education would be affordable, that we would prepare their children for professional work, and that we would walk alongside them on their journey to becoming faith-filled leaders. Some brave families did trust us, even when students were initially skeptical. Today, as I reflect on our remarkable growth to 140 students and the countless stories of transformation we’ve witnessed, I’m reminded that Cristo Rey Orange County High School represents something profound: the place where Gospel values meet the American dream, where love meets opportunity, and where belonging meets hard work.
What moves me most about our school isn’t just the numbers—though doubling our enrollment in one year speaks volumes about the demand for what we offer. It’s the individual stories of students like Kristy, who arrived reluctant and resistant but found her voice through our community of care. It’s watching students discover that they can’t imagine being anywhere else once they experience what it means to feel truly supported, challenged, and valued. Our students consistently tell us they chose Cristo Rey because it’s affordable and because our Corporate Work Study Program will help them secure meaningful careers. What they discover is so much more—they find a place where they belong and a launching pad for their dreams.
As we stand at this pivotal point in our school’s history, we face both tremendous opportunity and urgent need. Cristo Rey is not a spectator sport; it requires the active advocacy and participation of our entire community. HONORING OUR FOUNDING BOARD CHAIR
As Tim Psomas transitions from his role as Founding Board Chair, we are filled with immense gratitude for his foundational leadership and lasting impact. Tim’s journey with Cristo Rey began when he witnessed the transformative power of the Cristo Rey model through students from Verbum Dei Jesuit High School who worked at his engineering firm, Psomas Engineering. What struck him most profoundly was how the program developed students while inspiring his employees to become mentors and champions for these young people.
“Tim’s leadership has been transformational for our school and community. His ability to see potential where others saw obstacles, combined with his relentless commitment to our mission, turned what many considered an impossible dream into the thriving reality we see today,” said Steve Holte, Founding President of Cristo Rey. “Tim helped build a movement that’s changing lives and breaking cycles of poverty for families throughout Orange County. His vision, integrity, and unwavering belief in our students have set the foundation for everything we continue to achieve.”
Tim’s commitment extended far beyond initial planning. He spearheaded the rigorous feasibility study required by the Cristo Rey Network, securing support from 35 local employers who pledged to provide work-study positions for our students. His leadership in building community partnerships, and establishing our campus at the former School of Our Lady in Santa Ana laid the foundation for everything we have achieved.

I am amazed and so grateful for the incredible energy and momentum that has defined Cristo Rey Orange County High School during my tenure as Board Chair. When I look back on these foundational years, I am filled with gratitude for the privilege of serving alongside such dedicated board members, passionate administrators, and committed staff who have worked tirelessly to bring our shared vision to life.
As I transition from my role as Board Chair to board member, I do so with immense pride in what we have accomplished together and boundless optimism for what lies ahead. We have built something extraordinary from the ground up—a school that serves families who would otherwise be unable to afford a private, Catholic, college preparatory education. Our academic and corporate work study programs, combined with the mentoring relationships that naturally develop, create transformative experiences that extend far beyond traditional education. Our young people are the future leaders of Orange County, equipped with both the skills and the values necessary to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
The growth we have experienced—from 69 founding students to 140, and now 210 today—speaks to the clear demand for what Cristo Rey offers, but more importantly, it reflects the trust that families have placed in our mission. Principal Karelyn Roberts and the Cristo Rey Mission
When Mrs. Karelyn Roberts walks into a classroom, everyone notices. Not surprising for a high school principal, except that she is greeted with smiles. Roberts is a firm yet warm leader who brings both exceptional educational expertise and genuine passion to her role as Founding Principal of Cristo Rey.
With extensive leadership experience as a principal in Texas school districts and a master’s degree in educational leadership, she has been a driving force behind Cristo Rey’s remarkable growth and success. From welcoming our inaugural class to building a thriving school community, she has championed every aspect of Cristo Rey’s development with unwavering dedication and vision. Under her leadership, Cristo Rey is building a robust academic program and vibrant culture centered in faith. Her team is creating pathways to success for students who might otherwise have been overlooked by traditional educational systems.
During pep rallies, at our ¡VIVA! gala, and during school gatherings, Roberts can be found calling everyone’s attention by leading the signature CROC clap—raising her arms to form the mouth of a crocodile (our school mascot)
and clapping those hands down with infectious enthusiasm. Anyone who joins the Cristo Rey team is introduced to this ritual and must not opt out. This embodies the “no opt out” culture at Cristo Rey that Roberts has helped cultivate, where every member of the community is expected to participate fully and support one another. What truly sets Roberts apart is her unwavering belief in the potential of every student who walks through Cristo Rey’s doors.

This philosophy comes alive in her interactions with students like Daniel, who transferred to Cristo Rey midsemester seeking “a clean slate.” Roberts took a chance on Daniel, embodying her conviction that every young person deserves an opportunity to be seen as “the amazing kids they truly are.”
One year later, Daniel is earning a 3.7 GPA and has been selected as a Simon Scholar, proving Roberts right.
Her leadership has fostered an environment where the daily affirmation “you belong here” becomes a lived reality for students who are challenged to achieve their potential while being reminded of their inherent worth. Her unwavering belief that “we don’t just change individual lives—we change the world” drives everything Cristo Rey accomplishes.
CELEBRATING OUR SIMON SCHOLARS: A Testament
to Excellence
In just our second year of operation, we are proud to announce that six members of our founding class—Amalia, Ann, Azucena, Daniel, Dean, and Pablo—have been selected as Simon Scholars, a prestigious recognition that speaks volumes about the caliber of education and preparation our students receive at Cristo Rey. This achievement is particularly remarkable when considering the program’s selectivity, as while fewer than 10% of applicants at a school are traditionally selected for this honor, an impressive 50% of our applicants were chosen as Simon Scholars. For a school that began with 69 pioneering students and has grown to 140, this extraordinary success rate demonstrates that our academic program is not only meeting expectations but exceeding them as we scale.
This milestone represents more than individual achievement—it validates our school’s rapid development and growing academic excellence. The Simon Scholars program recognizes students who demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to serving their communities—qualities that are cultivated daily within our school’s mission-driven environment. As Cristo Rey continues to grow, these six exceptional scholars from our founding class are setting a powerful precedent for the expanding classes that follow, proving that our students can compete with and outperform their peers from established institutions.
These scholars join an elite group of students who will receive additional support and scholarship opportunities as they continue their educational journeys, and their selection serves as an inspiring example of what’s possible when students are given the opportunity to thrive in an environment where they truly belong. Their success is a testament to Cristo Rey’s growing reputation for academic excellence and positions our expanding school as a destination where students don’t just access education— they excel at the highest levels.

As Cristo Rey grew from 69 to 140 students, so too had our network of committed corporate partners who recognized the value of investing in our students’ futures. The 2024 – 2025 Academic year marked two exciting new traditions in our Corporate Work Study program that showcased not only the incredible support of our business partners but also the expanding community of leaders who were joining our mission to transform lives through education and meaningful work experience.
Our inaugural CEO Breakfast brought together the leaders of our growing partner network with Cristo Rey students in an exclusive setting that created meaningful connections and opened doors to amazing opportunities.
“I plan to stay with Latham and Watkins (law firm) for the rest of my high school career,” said Ashley, the student speaker at the Breakfast. “I’ve been given the privilege of working with mentors who have given me the best advice and guidance. So, after graduating, I am confident I will get hired by Latham and Watkins because I know they value my hard work, honesty, and dedication.”
Ashley’s concluding remarks were met with a round of applause by those in attendance – over 60 Orange County business and education leaders. These moments of connection demonstrated how our expanding corporate partnership program creates more mentors, advocates, and champions for our students’ futures with each passing year.
Our Draft Day reached new heights as the event moved to Angel Stadium for the first time—a venue that reflected both the growing scale of our program and excitement in the business community. The grandeur of the stadium setting reflected the significance of this moment for our students and their families, as each student was officially “drafted” by their corporate partner for the upcoming year. The move to Angel Stadium symbolized how our partnerships have grown in scope and stature, attracting companies who want to be part of something bigger.
These milestone events embody how Cristo Rey’s growing reputation has attracted an expanding circle of business leaders who understand that investing in our students means investing in the future of our community. When CEOs take time from their busy schedules to connect with students, and when companies celebrate our Draft Day with the enthusiasm it deserves, they’re sending a powerful message: our students matter, their potential is limitless, and their success is worth investing in. As our student body grows, so does our impact—creating more pathways to transformation and attracting even more companies who want to be part of the Cristo Rey story, one student and one partnership at a time.

Our St. Joseph the Worker Award Winner
Rising sophomore Vincent T. exemplifies everything that makes Cristo Rey special, earning the 20242025 prestigious St. Joseph the Worker Award for his outstanding professionalism and dedication in our Corporate Work Study program. Vincent has exemplified workplace excellence at KBS, a premier real estate investment manager in Orange County. He demonstrates remarkable eagerness to learn, curiosity, and integrity that impressed both his colleagues and supervisors.
“Vincent shows a great desire to learn and understand how to keep a business maintained and running at high standards,” said Eleazer Escobedo, Manager of Facilities at KBS. “He is also developing a strong work ethic to accomplish any task put in front of him, and he does not shy away from asking good questions with internal staff and outside vendors.”
Vincent’s journey to Cristo Rey began with his parents’ dream of providing him with a Catholic education that seemed financially out of reach—until they discovered Cristo Rey through their church.
“I wasn’t surprised that he got that award because he’s always a helpful person and a nice person, and he’ll be sunshine to everyone he meets,” said Vincent’s father, Timothy.
That “sunshine” quality his father speaks of is evident in Vincent’s daily interactions where his positive nature and willingness to assist others have made him a natural leader among his peers. One example was Vincent’s attention to detail and understanding the importance of timecards. He would help his fellow students with their own timecards, providing support and a sense of community.
This initiative and follow-through have been so exceptional that he secured a coveted summer position at his work site at KBS—a testament to the professional skills he’s developed through Cristo Rey’s unique approach to education.
“What makes our school special is that unlike other schools, we get unique lessons such as financial literacy, networking, and how to hold a conversation with business professionals,” he explains. “These factors will greatly enhance my success for my future career.”
Vincent’s success story embodies the transformative power of Cristo Rey’s mission, proving that when students are given the opportunity to belong, learn, and lead, they don’t just succeed—they shine.
THE POWER OF TRANSFORMATION:
A Parent’s Perspective
When Erendira Perez first considered Cristo Rey for her sons Pablo and Max, she never imagined her children attending a private high school. As a single mother working as an eligibility technician for Orange County Social Services, the financial commitment that seemed to come with a private school education seemed daunting. Taking a leap of faith, she enrolled Pablo in the school’s founding class. The transformation she witnessed gave her such confidence in Cristo Rey’s mission that she didn’t hesitate to enroll her second son, Max, as the school continued to grow.
Today, as she watches her boys thrive alongside a growing student body that has doubled since the school’s founding, she knows every sacrifice has been worth it, and Cristo Rey’s unique funding model has made this education possible.
“Cristo Rey has delivered on its promises by providing our family with financial aid, giving our children laptops, employing qualified staff who genuinely care about education, and teaching my sons responsibility and accountability,” said Perez. “What’s been amazing to watch is how the school keeps getting stronger each year—more opportunities for our kids, more companies wanting to hire them, and more families discovering what we’ve found here.”
The transformation in her sons has been remarkable and mirrors the growth happening throughout the school. Pablo, a proud member of the founding class, has blossomed from a reluctant 8th grader who did not want to attend Cristo Rey into a confident student ambassador, cross-country runner, varsity soccer player, and worker at Slater Builders. As one of the original 69 students, Pablo has witnessed firsthand how the school has expanded its programs, athletic teams, and work partnerships. Max, a first-year student who joined as part of the school’s continued growth to 140 students, has already seen his grades improve and his confidence soar through his work at Silverwood Landscape. Both boys, who once resisted the idea of attending Cristo Rey, now cannot imagine themselves anywhere else and often talk about how exciting it is to be part of a school that keeps growing and creating new opportunities.
“It takes a village to raise good children, and Cristo Rey plays a key role,” Erendira reflects. “What I love is that our village keeps growing— more families, more businesses, more people who believe in what we’re building here.”
Through the school’s unique work-study program, comprehensive support system, and focus on faith formation, her family has been transformed. The boys now understand and appreciate their mother’s sacrifices because they are working too, and their family dynamic has improved as they have become kinder and more compassionate to each other. As Cristo Rey continues to grow and expand its reach, Erendira sees her sons not just as beneficiaries of this education, but as pioneers who will help pave the way for future classes. Most importantly, her sons are now envisioning their college futures with excitement and hope—a testament to Cristo Rey’s mission of opening doors that seemed impossible just a few years ago, and creating a foundation for continued growth that will benefit generations of families to come.

GROWING BEYOND LIMITS:
The Evolution of Our ¡VIVA! Student Voices
The spotlight fell on 15-year-old Kristy as she stepped to the podium, her voice steady and her smile genuine. Before an audience of over 400 ¡VIVA! Gala attendees, she embodied everything Cristo Rey stands for—not just academic achievement, but profound personal transformation.
Kristy’s path to that stage began in an unexpected place: disappointment. Like many teenagers, she had her heart set on following her middle school friends to Mater Dei. But when financial realities redirected her family’s choice to Cristo Rey, Kristy arrived reluctant and resistant, carrying the invisible weight that COVID-19 had placed on so many young shoulders—depression, anxiety, and a profound sense of isolation that had fractured her social world and mental well-being.
Those early days were marked by fear and loneliness. Kristy had built walls around herself. Yet within Cristo Rey’s halls, something extraordinary began to unfold—the patient, persistent work of transformation that happens when caring adults refuse to give up on a student.
Through the dedicated support of staff, meaningful friendships, and opportunities to grow, she stepped into roles as a Student Ambassador and math tutor where she found her voice—not just in helping others learn, but in learning who she could become.
The Corporate Work Study program became the crucible for Kristy’s metamorphosis. At Placeworks, in their creative department, and at Hoag Hospital in medical education, she’s exploring her fascination with data, art, and the medical field.
Standing at that podium, Kristy spoke words that captured the essence of her journey: “This dramatic change in myself would have never happened if I hadn’t come to Cristo Rey.” Her delivery was calm, confident, peppered with humor—a far cry from the scared, isolated girl who had first walked through our doors.
But perhaps the most beautiful moment came in what wasn’t scripted. Backstage, Kristy had battled pre-speech nerves, finding comfort and encouragement from Valeria, last year’s ¡VIVA! student speaker. As Kristy concluded her remarks, Valeria spontaneously walked onto the stage, flowers in hand, to celebrate her fellow students’ triumph. Both girls stood beaming—one having found her voice, the other choosing to lift it up.
As the applause thundered for both girls that evening, it wasn’t just recognition of Kristy’s remarkable speech or Valeria’s beautiful gesture of support. It was celebration of what becomes possible when we refuse to accept that any student’s story is finished before it’s truly begun—when we believe that every young person, regardless of their starting point, deserves the chance to discover who they’re meant to become.

Valeria continues to exemplify Cristo Rey’s commitment to fostering sustained growth as she excelled in her sophomore year, maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA while serving as Student Ambassador. She continues to grow academically as a Junior and spent the summer at the University of Notre Dame for their Vision summer program—a remarkable achievement that brings her closer to her dream of attending the University. She continued her professional growth by working at Redwitz accounting firm this past summer, building on the experience that opened her eyes to career possibilities she never imagined.

Celebrating Growth Through Belonging
On the Feast Day of St. Joseph, Cristo Rey welcomed renowned author and Jesuit priest Fr. Greg Boyle to preside over our Mass and share insights from his book “Cherished Belonging.” Fr. Boyle’s powerful message resonated deeply with our community as he reminded us that “Cristo Rey is not the place you come to, it was always going to be the place to go from, to imagine a circle of compassion, and then imagine nobody standing outside that circle. And that’s the only praise our exhausted God has any interest in.”
This vision of inclusive compassion reveals how authentic growth unfolds—not in isolation, but through the connections that expand our understanding of ourselves and our capacity to serve others.

What started as a nervous first day—hands shaking, worried about making friends—became the foundation for profound personal development when classmate Chloe noticed they shared the same schedule and simply said, “we should stick together throughout the day.” That small gesture of kindness didn’t just replace Mika’s fear with joy; it planted the seeds for her ongoing growth within Cristo Rey’s nurturing community.
Mika’s development accelerated through her Corporate Work Study placement at St. Joseph Providence Hospital, where each new experience stretched her understanding of her own potential. When nurse practitioner Darcie worked tirelessly to secure Mika the opportunity to observe surgery, she opened doors not just to professional exposure, but to personal growth through mentorship. From learning to scrub-in like a surgeon to spending the day with Dr. El-Bayar discovering the intricacies of hernias and sarcomas alongside invaluable life advice, Mika experienced how growth multiplies when caring adults invest in a young person’s future simply because they believe in their potential.
“None of them needed to help me or talk to me, but they did,” reflected Mika. “The kindness everyone has shown me made me realize that I have found a community that brings me kindness and acceptance, at both school and work.” More than finding acceptance, Mika discovered that growth happens through relationships—each interaction building her confidence and expanding her vision of what’s possible.
Mika’s story perfectly embodies Fr. Boyle’s vision of cherished belonging, demonstrating that growth is never a solitary pursuit but a communal journey. At Cristo Rey, students develop not only through academic achievement and professional experience, but through the daily acts of kindness that transform nervous freshmen into confident young men and women who understand their worth and potential. Each moment of connection—from Chloe’s first-day friendship to Darcie’s mentorship—becomes a catalyst for deeper growth.

In Memoriam Patricia “Trish” O’Donnell
Patricia “Trish” O’Donnell passed away on May 3, 2025, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy of service and generosity that touched countless lives throughout Orange County. Born Patricia Dwyer in 1938, Trish embodied the spirit of compassion and civic engagement. Her lifelong commitment to education and her deep faith made her a natural champion of our cause, understanding that Cristo Rey’s unique model of academic excellence and professional development could transform the lives of young people from working-class families.
Trish’s philanthropic heart extended far beyond our school walls, as she dedicated herself to numerous worthy causes in Orange County. Her generous inclusion of Cristo Rey in her estate planning reflects her unwavering belief in the power of education to break cycles of poverty and create opportunities for our students. Living by her profound motto, “I was born to serve,” Trish exemplified the values we strive to instill in our students—service to others, academic excellence, and faithful stewardship of our gifts.
“She believed that the important treasure you can leave behind is woven into the lives of others. She loved Cristo Rey OC High School for this reason,” said Alanna Psomas. “She knew the main idea was to educate their students’ minds and souls with the tools needed to fulfill their God-given talents.”
While Cristo Rey deeply mourns her passing, we celebrate Trish’s enduring impact on our Cristo Rey family and pledge to honor her memory by continuing to serve our students with the same dedication and warmth she showed throughout her remarkable life. Her legacy will live on in every graduate who walks across the stage, empowered by the educational opportunities her generosity helped provide.

VOLUNTEER
There are many ways you can make a difference whether a one-time event or a recurring commitment, we need your help. Some examples include, corporate volunteer days, Draft Day, Career Day, join a committee, paint a classroom, or tutor our students.

In addition to providing jobs for our students through the Corporate Work Study Program, corporations can support students by underwriting a program, sponsoring a special event, hosting a supplies drive, or volunteering with us.
