MILAN, Tenn.–Milan Police continue investigating a double shooting that killed one person. Police worked to find the answers as to what happened at the house on Southwest Front Street. “Officers responding found one person deceased and the other needing medical attention,” Milan Police Chief Bobby Sellers said.

Travelers will stop their cars to see the horse and many stop him to carry on a conversation about horses. He is proud of his ability to take animals that have desire but needs an education to help reach his potential. Horses naturally have the gift to perform but must have trainers to encourage them to work at their craft. When they are doing what they are born to do horses are some of the most beautiful and exciting animals. West Tennessee is home to many breeds of horses and they all have their special skills. CROWD IN LINCOLN COURTS AREA HURLS FIREWORKS AT POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS SUNDAY MORNING
ONE DIES CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 That grim discovery came after police received a shots fired call around four Friday afternoon. First responders rushed the other victim to Milan General with serious injuries, and the person was air lifted to another hospital from there. Police say they’re still trying to put the pieces together and figure out what happened. “What we do know from witnesses that were inside the house, it appears to have been some type of domestic squabble that went south quickly,” Sellers said. So far, Chief Sellers says there’s a person of interest. “We have one in custody at Milan PD that we’re interviewing right now,” Sellers said, “we’re just trying to figure out what he saw, and what his part is.” Police say this shooting is still under investigation.

JACKSON TN—Police and fire investigators are probing an alleged attack on firefighters, officers and city vehicles Sunday morning in the area of Lincoln Courts Apartments. The Jackson Fire Department responded to a dumpster fire at 33 Carver Avenue. JFD Operations Chief Don Friddle says several fireworks were directed toward Engine 32 which was traveling west on Roosevelt Parkway. A battalion chief and several Jackson police units observed a crowd upwards of 40 people gathering. Friddle says a significant amount of small and large mortar fireworks were hurled at emergency personnel from both departments. One firefighter was injured. Several city vehicles were dented and one windshield was damaged. JFD is working with the JPD to identify the person(s) responsible for injuring the firefighter and damaging city property. “Incidents such as this are very unique to our organization; our personnel are respectful, helpful and always willing to give their all for the community,” Friddle said. “Therefore, we cannot comprehend what prompted the violence against our firefighters. We will not and cannot tolerate this type of behavior toward those that give so much to protect our community.”

SCHOOL BOARD CANDIDATE CURLIN’S CAR VANDALIZED AT Woman Now Charged with Criminal Homicide for Saturday Night’s Fatal LYNWOOD SHOPPING CENTER JACKSON TN—While angst erupted in the community Shooting in Madison over Friday’s mask mandate, school board candidate Rob Curlin had his own frustrations. Curlin posted pictures on his Facebook page of the work of vandals to his car. Running against incumbent Janice Hampton, Curlin was in the process of placing campaign signs in his district. “(I) stopped by Lynwood Kroger on the way home to pick up a few things, and had several signs still in the back of my car,” he wrote. “There were enough of them that they were easily visible walking by.” Curlin said someone who apparently does not like him seeking the seat “had shaken up something and sprayed all over it. (My car was targeted for sure, because not a single one of the 5 cars surrounding it had a speck of anything on it.)” Five school board seats are on the line in the August election. 7/6/2020- Nashville Darlene R. Knight, 48, is now charged with criminal homicide for Saturday night’s murder of Latonia Johnson, 50, who was fatally shot at 9:45 p.m. in the parking lot of Rothwood Apartments on Rothwood Avenue in Madison. The investigation shows that the two women attended a birthday party at the complex and, while there, got into a fist fight. Knight initially left in a vehicle, but returned as Johnson was in the parking lot preparing to leave. Witnesses reported that Knight got out of her car armed with a pistol and began to point it at Johnson. Johnson charged toward Knight. Knight fired. Johnson was hit and died at the scene. Knight fled prior to police arrival.

So far, I have liked what I have seen from our new superintendent of schools Dr. Marlon King. He seems to be checking all the boxes and making the right moves as JMCSS prepares for the upcoming fall semester. Wednesday will be his first official day on the Don Polley with JMC Superintendent of job and I am looking Schools Dr. Marlon King forward to having an opportunity to meet him in person. In a recent photo array, I seen a picture of him and Chairman Pete Johnson and Dr. Eric Jones. I immediately thought of what was, what is, and what might have been. I must confess I was excited about the direction Dr. Jones had in mind for JMCSS. The school board remains a constant and I am hoping that they will choose not to be an impediment to this superintendent. I would like to point out that this is an election year and let us hope that COVID19 has taught us that our actions do make a difference and can have a positive impact on the community. Students will require a lot of reassurance once school starts back again and continuity speaks volumes in uncertain times. I hope that more than 29% of registered voters agree with that this fall.
UNITED WE STAND It is encouraging to see that despite financial uncertainty that the construction of two new schools will be under way this fall. However, a new building will not teach a student anymore than a new Chromebook will enhance learning in the hands of a student that is apathetic. Leadership matters and I think that Dr. King and his staff believe that positivity is contagious. He has surrounded himself with a most impressive team. Everybody loves a winner so let’s hope that this superintendent will gain the support and admiration of his school board, his faculty, along with civic and county leaders as he strives to fill a void that has required attention for too long. Parents, teachers will need your support this fall and after the disruption caused by COVID-19. You should have a different level of appreciation for all they do. Working together this can still be a decade for the history books in the Hub-City despite inauspicious beginnings. Leaders are readers folks and if you want your child to develop a “super power,” encourage them to work on their reading and writing skills. This will translate into a better vocabulary and greatly improve their overall communication skills. Communication is currency in the 21st Century!

MADISON COUNTY CUTS $21 MILLION OFF BUDGET FOR THIS BUDGET YEAR The Madison County Commission passed their 2020-2021 budget with cuts across the board and that has commissioners discussing a lot options. 19 commissioners voted yes and four voted no, with a total of $21 million in cuts. “Not one Madison County Karen Bell Department was picked on,” said Madison County Finance Director Karen Bell. “It was a “have to” case to try to survive in Madison County.Ê I’m very thankful that we’ve been able to keep all our employees aND continue to provide all the services we do.” Like every department, cuts were made to the school and that caused disagreements in whether they were receiving maintenance of effort or not. “We looked at the “maintenance of effort” and reduced that by $416,000.Ê However we increased through their AMERESCO payment, which is a utility bond that we did back in 2009.” “We reduced their payment down to $420,000 which actually gave them an increase in their budget if about $33,091.” said budget committee Chairman Doug Stephenson. Schools Superintendent Dr. Marlon King was in attendance at the meeting, watching as commissioners debated whether schools were getting enough money.Ê “We are actually maintenance of effort for the schools,” said commissioner Mike Taylor. “What most people don’t understand about maintenance of effort is that can ebb and flow up and down with the number of students the County has.” Commissioner Claudell Brown was one of the four people who voted no on the budget.Ê He said it was because of the schools funding decisions. “My potholes are important, but not as important as the young person who has been away from formal learning for almost half a year,” said Brown. Bell warned commissioners and said budget shortfalls are here and they are here to stay. Dr King was unavailable for comments on the newly approved budgets.Ê Commissioners also moved forward on a bill to allow more progress to be made in the “Great Wolf Lodge” coming to Jackson and Mayor Jimmy Harris asked for prayers for Commissioner Billy Spain snd his family, who was hospitalized a while back and still isn’t well.

Gas station employee threatened over face mask July 5, 2020ÊÊStephanie Fernandez - wbbjtv.com JACKSON, Tenn. — A gas station employee has quit her job after being threatened by a customer. The incident happened Saturday morning at the Old Medina Market. Two customers got upset after an employee asked them to put on a face mask. One of those customers became so upset, he went to his car. A minute later he came back wearing a clown mask and threatened the employee by saying there was going to be a “mask murder” because he was asked to put on a mask. This happened one day after it became mandatory for customers to wear a mask before shopping or walking into a business in Madison County. “Tore stuff down in the store, went outside and got full clowns mask, put it on his head and came back in and threatened my employees that there was going to be a killing,” said Old Medina Market Manager Susan Adams. “He will be banned from this parking lot. MASK MANDATE ISSUED FOR MADISON COUNTY July 3, 2020 WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department issued a mask mandate Friday, July 3 following a steady increase in COVID-19 positive patients in West Tennessee. The mandate will go into effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, July 4 and last through 11:59 p.m. Saturday, August 29. The mandate requires everyone to wear a mask while in businesses, organizations or venues open to the public in Madison County, with the exception of places of worship. Children under 2-years-old are not required to wear face coverings, and businesses are not required to supply face coverings. Customers dining at restaurants are not required to wear a mask while eating. The decision comes after a steady increase in positive cases across West Tennessee, including Madison County, causing concern for the amount of space and equipment available at West Tennessee Healthcare facilities. On Friday, Tedford said there were a total of 88 positive patients in Madison County. The mask mandate will be enforced based on complaints filed to the city, county and health department, and business owners will be cited by the codes enforcement department.
