Long time serving Madison County Clerk Freddie Wayne Pruitt age 82, passed away at Jackson Madison County General hospital July 17, with his family by his side. Mr Pruitt went to work in the Madison County clerks office for 10 years as a clerk and then wa later elected as the Madison County clerk and served an additional 39 years. He was an active member of the Lesters Chapel Methodist Church and served as church treasurer and lay leader.Ê He was one of the early leaders of the Madison County Fire Department And held the rank of Captain at station one until his health no longer allowed. He was a graduate of J B Young High School And proudly served in the National Guard.Ê Early in his career he was a clerk for Web Allison grocery store on south highland and later sold insurance. He was survived by 2 sons David W Pruitt wife Maryann And Thomas Pruitt wife Angie both of Jackson.Ê

July 23, 2019 - CSENews Lost prevention at Jackson’s North Walmart detained Jessica “Nikki” Conger, wife of newly-elected Jackson Mayor Scott Conger, last Sunday and cited her for shoplifting. Court documents show that Conger apparently failed to ring up and pay for 28 items at a self-checkout register at the Emporium Drive location around 3 p.m., The cost of the items totaled just over $84. Mayor Conger said in a Jackson Sun interview Tuesday, that his children often place items in the shopping cart, which are normally returned to the shelves. However, the mayor’s wife was not allowed to do so Sunday. ”It’s frustrating and it’s maddening, but I guess don’t mess up at the self-checkout at Walmart,” said Mayor Conger. Jessica Conger was not arrested, but must report to the Madison County Jail for booking and processing before Aug. 2 and will appear in Jackson City Court for her arraignment.
JMCSS ranked 132 out of 140 schools across state By Malorie Paine - CSENews July 24, 2019 - School board members on the Long Range Planning Committee heard last night that the Jackson Madison County School System is currently ranked 132 out of 140 school districts in the state. The LRP committee had initially met to discuss two major topics: the location for a new K-8 school and the district’s long term strategic plan. However, these topics were not fully discussed because the committee was presented with data gathered by Dr. Brent Lay. Lay explained to the committee that JMCSS has gone from performing in the top 50% of the state to the bottom 6%, said committee chairperson Morris Merriweather.Ê Lay’s research was part of a proposal for the school district’s 5-year strategic plan. Lay spent several weeks compiling the data and research into the proposal he presented to the committee, Merriweather said. Lay’s proposals discussed overcrowding in some schools as a contributing factor.Ê “We cannot continue to conduct business as usual,” Merriweather said after considering the information Lay presented. The committee will meet again before the end of the month to more fully discuss the strategic plan, Merriweather said.Ê However, in the meantime, he has several ideas of steps the board must consider to move the district forward in their rankings.Ê The district must make it a priority to hire a superintendent with turnaround experience, Merriweather said. Currently, Dr. Ray Washington is serving as the interim superintendent until the board can identify, interview and hire a permanent candidate. Merriweather also said that he believes the district should combine elementary and middle school grades into K-8 schools where students can have more longterm relationships with their teachers and school staff. “The students move from elementary to middle school and have to start all over with teachers and administration who don’t know them,” Merriweather said.Ê Merriweather believes keeping students in the same school will allow students to be more successful in the long run rather than starting over for middle school then moving again 3 years later for high school. Additionally, Merriweather said the district must make it a priority to also hire administration for the district schools that are knowledgeable in the turnaround process.Ê The LRP committee will meet again next week to continue work on the strategic plan, but Merriweather said he hopes the board as a whole will schedule additional meetings to resolve what he calls a “crisis” within the district.Ê

‘I Beat That N***r Like He Owed Me Money’ New Jersey Cop Faces Up to 40 Years for Federal Charges Including Using Excessive Force ByÊKiersten WillisÊJuly 20, 2019 - An FBI investigation into several police officers in Paterson, New Jersey, has led to a seventh one being charged. On Tuesday, Frank Toledo pled guilty in U.S. District Court in Newark to conspiracy to violate people’s civil rights, using excessive force, and filing a false police report, the Paterson TimesÊreported. (Photo via Patterson Times) “The U.S. Attorney’s Office and our law enforcement partners remain committed to identifying and prosecuting corrupt police officers who violate the civil rights of our people,” U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito told the publication. “We will continue to aggressively pursue these cases, and we are grateful to our counterparts at the FBI, the Paterson Police Department and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, for their dedicated assistance on this investigation.” On the false police report charge, Toledo, 30, would work with fellow officers Matthew Torres, Eudy Ramos, Daniel Pent and Jonathan Bustios — who have also been charged in the probe along with two other officers not involved with Toledo — to stop and search vehicles without justification. The officers would loot the vehicles of valuables and cash, splitting it among themselves. And stealing money wasn’t just Frank Toledo reserved for traffic stops. The newspaper also reported they’d stop and frisk people on the street and steal their money. To conceal the cash they took during stops, Toledo and his comrades would file false police reports. One example of that came on Dec. 2, 2017. Then, Toledo and Ramos stopped and arrested a person in Paterson and kept $1,000 in cash for themselves. In the false arrest affidavit, the officers did not include the money they took from the detainee. Such activities were communicated through text messages using “mango” as a code word for cash. “Yo what the f— are you doing? I’m tryin’ to go mango hunting. Let’s goooo!” Bustios texted Toledo on Nov. 6, 2017. There were also apparent admissions of using excessive force on residents, which resulted in three charges. In one case, Toledo texted Bustios about chasing down an arrested juvenile. He also shoved the juvenile to the ground and punched him several times. “I’ve been borderline blacking out when I catch these n—ers,” Toledo told Bustios as he recalled the chase and beatdown. “I beat that n—-er like he owed me money.” He added to Bustios that when he unleashed on the juvenile he “was no longer a cop.” Another incident saw Toledo and Ramos chasing and tackling a resident and hitting the person multiple times in an incident that was captured on video and uploaded to YouTube. The individual was later released without charges. A third use of force incident came when Toledo and Torres arrested someone, handcuffed the person behind his back, and placed them in the backseat of their squad car. Driving the detainee, Toledo pressed the brake pedal into the floor, which slammed the person’s head and body against the car’s divider. Toledo captured the moment on his phone and sent it around. For Toledo’s alleged crimes, he faces up to 40 years in prison. Toledo, who admitted to investigators that he gave false statements, is scheduled for sentencing on Oct. 22, 2019.
CROCKETT COUNTY SEES INCREASE IN DRUG RAIDS July 19, 2019ÊÊAli Mason - wbbj-tv.com ALAMO, Tenn. — Crockett County has noticed more drug raids occurring in the area. Sheriff Troy Klyce says that, in a way, they have increased. “What we’ve done is change some personnel around and take advantage of what some officers do really well,” Klyce said. “It’s turned out well for us.” Currently, the sheriff’s department is fully staffed so they have the ability to move officers around. Klyce says it’s about maximizing officers’ skills. “We have some guys here that have been on the drug task force, currently still are, but they’re assigned here,” Klyce said. “They’re doing different things, and they’ve been able to step up and help, too.” While they have the manpower to do more raids, he also says that they’re seeing more meth ice in the county. “We’ve made several ice arrests, mostly dealing with people who are selling,” Klyce said. He also says that the drugs are coming into Crockett County from other areas of West Tennessee. Most of the raids resulted in busting what the department calls midlevel drug dealers. MAN INJURED, FACES MULTIPLE CHARGES FROM DRAGWAY INCIDENT At approximately 11:30 Saturday night July 20th, MCSO Deputies responded to a call to Jackson Dragway, 79 Ranger Road concerning a wreck with injuries. The driver, Mr. Jerry Oliver was laying on the ground, next to the driver’s side of the car. EMS arrived on the scene and took control of his medical condition. Because of the severity of Mr. Oliver’s injuries he was airlifted to the Memphis Med. All witnesses gave similar accounts, that Mr. Oliver ”jumped” or crossed over a ditch at the east end of the dragstrip. It was at this time that he hit a vehicle, causing significant damage. He then proceeded to drive east down the dragstrip, which is the opposite direction of travel at a high rate of speed. He then crashed into a concrete barrier that held the “starting tree”, where there were two vehicles with crew members ready to start the next race. Mr. Oliver was charged with D.U.I, 8 counts of Aggravated Assault, and open container. At 2:43 am Sunday July 21st, Mr. Oliver’s condition at the Med was still critical.

Former convict finds life calling through sharing his past By Malorie Paine - CSENews Timmy Turner, Sr. is an infamous name in Gibson County and much of West Tennessee, but it wasn’t always for positive reasons.Ê Turner, now a motivational speaker, describes his past as one full of trials and tribulations.Ê “Everyone knew who I was,” Turner said of his younger self. Turner spent 5 weeks in a coma in 1987 after an attempted suicide, he spent time in prison, in a psychiatric ward, and was even homeless for three years. Despite all these things, Turner has not let his past dictate his life. Instead, he has used his past to fuel a more positive future for others. “My experiences weren’t just for me to hold them in,” he said. “I felt like I had to share with people.”Ê Turner said he was motivated to share his story with people because he did not have anyone to do that for him when he was younger, but felt it was necessary to help make sure people get on the right path.Ê “Our kids needs us,” Turner said. “I’m grateful that God gives me the words to reach the kids. I was overwhelmed from how the kids reacted when they heard my story.” His messages are always centered around one main point. “My message is that we all have two things God has given that no one can take away: choices and decisions,” he said. “Think about what you’re doing before you do it.”Ê Turner said this message is one he learned honestly, but a lesson he’s not ashamed of sharing anymore. “Choices and decisions are what we’ve got, but we’ve got to pay the consequences,” he said. Turner spends much of his time speaking to youth through church and community events. However, he said his message is one he’s willing to share with anyone in the community who will listen.Ê “My message is for everyone,” he said. “People who grow old, but never grow up, could be someone homeless, could be someone older or even the kids.” Turner said he’s grateful to be able to motivate others through his experiences, unlike many he knew from his younger days. “Many of my old friends are either locked up or dead and gone,” he said.Ê Turner said he’s made new friends though, and he wants to show youth another way of looking at the system he hated for a long time.Ê “The ones I had grudges with back in the day –police, sheriffs, district attorneys– are now some of my best friends,” Turner said.Ê Turner attributes making the right choices to his new found success. He now has a close-knit family and says his wife, Rebecca Paschall Turner, has been his biggest supporter in turning his life around completely. Turner says he plans to continue sharing his story with the community and showing what is possible when a person considers their choices and decisions. OPINIONS and such COLD PIZZA by Elvis RogersÊ Ê Ê How would you feel if you were sitting on the couch eating pizza and watching Leave it to Beaver and 30 minutes later you found yourself in the basement of a police station being questioned about a grisly triple homicide? I’ll tell you how I felt, but first here’s a little background to the story. Ê Ê I was scanning someÊ old newspaper articles when I came across this: “Ronald Ward dies in prison hospital at age 37” On April 12,1985 Ronald Ward was a 14 year old West Memphis Ark. child in the mid-term of repeating 7th grade for the 3rd time. After school on that day he went 2 blocks from his home over to his best friends house. After that things went hay wire. Ronald stabbed to death his 12 year old friend and the 2 great-aunts that his friend lived with. They were ages 72 and 76. Weapon of choice (or opportunity) was a butcher knife. It was a bloody mess. Multiple stab wounds to each. Afterwards it would take a West Memphis jury only 2 hours of deliberation to make Ronald the youngest prison inmate on death row in the nation at that time. His sentence was later changed to life without parole. He died 21 years later in prison from a medical condition. How does this connect to me? I was living in West Memphis and at the time was managing a retail store. When the police knocked at my door I assumed they wanted me to come to the station to probably discuss an employee or some incident related to my business. Upon arrival there I was directed to the basement where I was asked a series of questions by theÊ the investigators. Many of the questions were about my mother. Where was she? What kind of car does she drive? Where was I at the time of the crime? Do I know this person or that person? I answered the questions calmly and politely. (1) My mother is in Mississippi (2) She has no car. She does not drive, (3) I was at work. At least 100 people can verify that. I am also on camera all day long. (4) I have never heard of these people you mention. It became evident very quickly that I knew nothing and I was thanked and set free. I did not get angry at, or bad mouth the police. They have a serious job to do. They go about in a detailed and systematic way. That is how it has to be done for justice to be served. I did find out what had happened. It seems that they had picked up a suspect and while riding in their police car the suspect pointed to my house and in a totally random gesture had said “I was in that apartment that night”. I have no idea why he did that. He did not commit the crime, but apparently had been somewhere he didn’t want the police to know about. Go figure.Ê I missed the rest of Leave it to Beaver, but I do know that in this episode The Beaver was sent to bed without dinner for skipping school. I missed my dinner too. I suppose Ronald Ward did as well. There are lessons that I learned from this experience. What they say about “If you didn’t do anything wrong, you have nothing to be afraid of” is true. Also, “Don’t skip school”. In only a few years this event would be overshadowed by an even bigger event in this same neighborhood: the Robin Hood Hills Murders. They had to check their security cameras to see if I took the bag in question. charges They concluded the person behind me had CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 It’s not our best parenting decision, but we pick our battles and toddlers have a lot of battles.Ê On this particular day, Nikki was having issues with self-checkout and had called the staff over several times to make sure things were ringing up correctly. She was also scanned the same item (craft glue & ribbon) multiple times for the same item instead of scanning them individually. The cashier had to void several items, too. It was a bit of a mess and having a toddler doesn’t help the process go smoothly. People that are trying to steal, don’t usually ask for help during the act. She placed $200 worth of items that she paid for in bags and left the items she did not want to purchase in the buggy to be put in the unwanted items cart. She walked over to apologize to the staff for needing so much assistance and they quickly escorted her to a separate room with our daughter for questioning. They were detained for hours. My daughter was not allowed to use the restroom and had an accident. She was hungry because it was lunch time and was not allowed to eat. My three-year-old was a prisoner of Walmart.Ê Two months ago the city told Walmart that JPD would no longer be taking accused shoplifters to jail. This particular Walmart has a very strong anti-theft policy and they can be overzealous with their accusations. This would not be a story if she wasn’t my wife.Ê We will be going through the booking process, just like everyone else. I thank you for your compassion during this misunderstanding. In the meantime, I hear Kroger Grocery Pickup is fantastic.

Le Bonheur installing critical child transport unit and crew in Haywood BROWNSVILLE, Tenn.—Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital has received the okay from Haywood County government to station a Mobile Intensive Care Unit and Pedi-Flite crew in Haywood. At the County Commission meeting on July 15, county commissioners unanimously voted to provide Le Bonheur with a waiver that would allow them to set up base in the county. According to Chris Lea, director of the Haywood County Ambulance Authority, Le Bonheur will base a ground unit and crew in Haywood County “around the clock, 24hours a day.” The unit is a “specialty unit to get sick and injured children to Le Bonheur…” The Le Bonheur crew is also trained as a Pedi-Flite team. “If it’s a flight that’s being requested that involves a child or neonatal infant, then this crew will go with the Hospital Wing pilot to the hospital instead of the other nurses that fly.” “It’s an extraordinary asset to Haywood County,” commented Lea. “Not only do we have Hospital Wing here, but now we’ve got Le Bonheur’s neonatal transport unit and a crew here as well. It’s an extraordinary feat for Haywood County and it helps other counties by them being centrally located in West Tennessee.”

Notice is hereby given that on July 16 of 2019 Letters Testamentary (or of Administration as the case may be) in respect of the estate ofjeffery RICKY LEE STEWART, who died May 6, 2019, were issued to the undersigned by the Probate Court of Madison County, Tennessee. All persons, resident and non-resident, having claims, matured or unmatured, against the estate are required to file the same with the Clerk of the above-named Court on or before the earlier of the dates prescribed in (1) or (2) otherwise their claims will be forever barred (1) (A) Four (4) months from the date of the first publication (or posting, as the case may be) of this notice if the creditor received an actual copy of this notice to creditors at least sixty (60) days before date that is four (4) months from the date of the first publication (or posting); or (B) Sixty (60) days from the date the creditor received an actual copy of the notice to creditors, if the creditor received the copy of the notice less than sixty (60) days prior to the date that is four (4) months from the date of the first publication (or posting) as described in (1)(A); or (2) Twelve (12) months from the decedent’s date of death. Lane College Announces 2019 Football Schedule - Lane College to play 4 home games at the New Lane Field; - Media credential deadline for 2019 football season is August 23 JACKSON, TENN (July 9, 2019) – Lane College’s Office of Intercollegiate Athletics today announced the complete details for the 2019 football season. Lane will face teams from 8 different states beginningÊSeptember 7 ÊNovember 9.ÊÊThe SIAC Championship is scheduled for November 16. The Dragons will test their skills against some of the most renowned HBCU programs around the country in the competition that includes 2 NCAA Division 1 programs. When the season opens on September 7, the Dragons will play their first regular season game when they face NCAA Division 1, MEAC, South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, SC at 3:00 p.m. (CT). In Week 2 of the 2019 season, Lane College will travel to Tyler, Texas and face Texas College at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium on Saturday, September 14 at 11:00 a.m. (CT). The moment the impassioned football fans of Jackson have been waiting for arrives on Saturday, September 21 at the New Lane Field, when the Dragons play their 2019 home opener. Lane is set to face Edward Waters College of Florida at 2:00 p.m. with tailgate starting at 12:00 p.m. There will be food, liveÊmusic,Êand activities for children. The 2019 season also brings the opening of the new Lane Field. Our 100year-old stadiumÊisÊbeing updated to improve fans experience.
