FISHING WITH KEN Kenneth Jones has West Tennessee roots but now lives in Nashville. Like many West Tennesseans who live other places he often returns for a visit to the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee for recreational activities. Although big cities have water, fish and all the other fun activities that we have, there is nothing like playing in the back yard where you grew up. That is exactly what Ken did this weekend and he had much success catching bass, catfish and blue gills. He was popping bass on jigs and crank baits while blue gills and catfish were hitting those crickets. West Tennessee offers a serenity that is hard to match when you get to these off road lakes where you don’t hear car traffic, horns blowing and people talking you know what I mean. The only sounds you hear are in nature such as birds chirping, turkeys calling, bass popping the water and your fishing buddy trying to ease a fish out of the water without you hearing it. The good thing about all of this is that you can get your pole and your kids and head straight to the lake to enjoy the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee any time you want to. We have gold in our own back yard and people like Ken knows it and you should too. PHOTO IS KEN JONES WITH A NICE CATFISH.

At approximately 7:35 p.m., officers were dispatched to a shooting in the area of Roosevelt Parkway and Carver Street.Ê Responding officers located a juvenile that was suffering from a gunshot.Ê The juvenile was transported by Emergency Medical Services to a local hospital and later died from the injury.Ê Jackson Police have a person of interest in custody and are not looking for any other subjects at this time. TYREECE MILLER UNITED STATES MARSHALL NOMINATION MOVES OUT OF COMMITTEE United States Senator Marsha Blackburn announced the nomination of Jackson Police Department Deputy Chief Tyreece Miller has moved out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He’s now one step closer to confirmation as the United States Marshal for the Western District of Tennessee. His nomination now will be taken up on the full United States Senate for confirmation.
The recorded conversations of Gilmore, Piner and Moore were discovered June 4 during a routine audit of Piner’s in-car camera, according to documents released by the police department. “The conversations included disrespectful language, hate-filled speech and referred to Black people as the Nword,” the police chief said, adding that the officers also criticized him, several Black officers within the agency and made negative comments about individuals outside of the agency.

ROADMAP TO SCHOOL NEW NORMAL INITIATIVE Moving forward we have decided to provide a Roadmap for our School New Normal Initiative to have a one-stop-shop to house all of the information around our plan. Currently, the Roadmap has all of the information that has been presented thus far. The Roadmap is our way of being transparent and communicating with stakeholders as often as possible as we navigate these unprecedented times. This month, the state board of education passed a policy around a Continuous Learning Plan (i.e., CLP). This plan will ultimately drive what schools look like in the Fall. While we are uncertain of when school will start, please know that we are doing every thing within our authority to prepare for a safe and on schedule return, we must continue to observe guidance from the national, state and local levels. Now, putting on my parent hat — my wife and I are facing the same struggle as many. Our jobs require us to report to work daily while we must decide what do we do with our son. So where does that leave us? Imagine that! You thought it was just hitting your house. I share all of that to say, I will always consider both sides, leader and parent, as I think through situations, issues and/or crises. In my past experiences as a superintendent and a parent of a child who experienced the life of public schools, families have appreciated my decisions around schools and students.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announces the appointment of Dr Logan Hampton, President of Lane College, to the Tennessee State Capitol Commission to the West Tennessee citizen seat. Governor Lee also announced Finance and Administration Commissioner Butch Eley will serve as the commission chairman, filling Stuart McWhorter’s vacancy. “Dr Logan Hampton is a thoughtful leader of a respected Tennessee institution and I am pleased to appoint him to the State Capitol Commission” said Governor Bill Lee, “I thank him for accepting this role and his willingness to serve his fellow Tennesseans” Since 2014 Dr Hampton has served as President of Lane College , a Christian Methodist Episcopal Church affiliated institution.Ê

PANDEMIC EBT PROGRAM - DEADLINE EXTENDED Because schools were closed due to COVID-19 and our district participates in the USDA Community Eligibility Provision, all children in Jackson-Madison County Schools are eligible for $5.70 per child for each day during the months of March, April and May in food benefits through the Pandemic EBT program. A message went out on June 15th from the school district on how to apply. We are in the middle of the open enrollment period for households to apply. Families will get up to $5.70 per child on their P-EBT card to use on food and groceries. If you already have this card, you do not need to apply online. The amount will be automatically placed on your P-EBT card. Those families who wish to apply can go to http://www.tn.gov/humanservices or call 1-833-496-0661 and select option 3 for assistance. The deadline for applying has been extended until Monday, July 13th at 4:30 pm.

Though the trial was truly horrific, it was also formative. Truths I had been sharing with others for years became more precious to me as I had to rest on them every day for nearly three years. My initial prompting was to keep a detailed journal that I could one day present to my son so that he, too, could benefit from the hope we found during his illness. Though the idea frightened me initially, I could not shake it. Despite my apprehension for sharing these intimate details from our journey, a profound sense of responsibility and stewardship emerged. God’s investment in me, it seemed, was not justÊfor me.Ê Hope When Life UnravelsÊis more than a book. NAACP ENCOURAGED BY “COMMUNITY CONVERSATION” The focal points of Rasim and Confederate symbols where the topics of discussion when the Jackson Branch of the NAACP held a “Community Conversation” at the AMP last week. As expected the first item discussed was a confederate statue that stands on the north lawn at the Madison County Courthouse. A petition that has generated over 8,000 signatures is circulating to have the statue removed not demolished - but the reasoning is taxpayers are paying taxes on the property. Several of those in the crowd of about 100 people spoke enthusiastically about personal encounters with racism, police brutality, education and jobs. “The turnout was fine,” said Harrell Carter President of the Jackson Madison County NAACP. “We had energetic people and as you seen they spoke with their minds. You could feel their pain and suffering in their voice because they know even during the pandemic, the likelihood of things changing for the better is not necessarily ready made.Ê It’s something we are going to have to fight for - it’s the freedom.” “Black folks in the country have always had to fight for every piece of freedom they have they’ll continue to do that,” added Carter. “We do have our white brothers and sisters, Asians and if we have a people’s movement, there’s no power that can stop us. I think this is the beginning, the birthing of a coming together of a community that has big ideas and make some big changes in the future,” Carter said. Carter emphsized that he was dismayed because Mayor Scott Conger and County Mayor Jimmy Harris were not in attendance.Ê “This is a time when you would think elected officials, ministers and community leaders would be here, but it’s their choice and I think we are in a period of time to say; who does represent our causes who does and who don’t.”

Morant wrote “want dat on my jersey fr” on his tweet and also shared the image on his Instagram story with a similar message. He later deleted the posts andÊapologized via a statementÊto his Twitter account.
