July 13, 2020 WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff HENNING, Tenn. — Authorities have arrested Officer Trayvon Lee for attempting to introduce contraband into the West Tennessee State Penitentiary, according to a news release. The release states on July 12, Captain Clay Taylor and Internal Affairs Officer Thomas Shell conducted a search of Lee and his vehicle after receiving a tip from an officer on duty that noticed a strong odor of marijuana on Lee when he arrived for his shift. Lee denied smoking or possessing contraband, the release states, and consented to a search of his vehicle following a pat search. During the search, investigators uncovered 13 ounces of marijuana and 10 ounces of tobacco wrapped up in packages in the trunk of the car, according to the release.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT CONFIRMS THIRD COVID-19 RELATED DEATH IN MADISON COUNTY JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department received positive test results for 11 more confirmed cases of COVID-19. We now have 433 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Madison County. An 82-year-old male Madison County resident died Wednesday, July 8 due to complications from COVID-19.

Bureau.Ê Trump said his administration and Congress are currently negotiating the exact amount included in the next round of coronavirus relief. Five guns used, 50+ bullets fired during deadly Mississippi concert shooting by:ÊEryn Taylor,ÊJoneé Lewis-wreg.com - Posted:ÊJul 13, 2020 PANOLA COUNTY, Miss. — Two people are dead and at least six people were injured after shots were fired into a large crowd at a concert in Panola County over the weekend.Ê District Attorney John Champion said a large group was gathered at the LPS Ballpark on Hunter Chapel Road in Como, Mississippi, when at least 50 shots were fired into the crowd around 1:30 a.m. Sunday.Ê Champion said an estimated 500-1,000 people were at the event. An earlier estimate said there were around 100 people. An event flyer showed Memphis-based rapper Big Boogie (right) was scheduled to perform at the venue that night. One male victim was found dead at the scene, while a woman was airlifted to a hospital in Memphis, where she died, Champion said. He did not release the names of the victims.Ê Three people went to nearby hospitals for treatment for gunshot wounds, and three more were run over and hurt during the chaos that ensued after bullets started flying, he said.

TWO FEUDING NEIGHBORS CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED ASSAULT AFTER GUNFIRE INJURES WOMAN 7/10/2020 - Nashville Two feuding neighbors are each charged with aggravated assault after a Friday afternoon argument Joe Cole Kechon Freeman between the men led to gunfire which injured a woman. Joe Cole, 25, and Kechon Freeman, 21, who live near each other in the 100 block of Tuckahoe Square East, got into an argument. During the initial dispute, Freeman was armed with a rifle. Cole is then alleged to have retrieved a rifle from his residence, firing shots into the air and then into Freeman’s residence, striking Freeman’s 20-year-old girlfriend in the arm. She was transported by private vehicle to Skyline Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

The release states Lee has been terminated from employment at WTSP. “The introduction of contraband into one of our prisons by anyone is a felony offense and a threat to the safety of our team, the offenders we supervise and the public,” TDOC Commissioner Tony Parker said. “We remain committed to working with local law enforcement to vigorously prosecute anyone who attempts to bring in contraband whether it is an inmate, visitor or staff.” TDOC encourages anyone with information about potential concerns to call the department’s 24-hour anonymous tip line at 1-844-832-3463.

Weekly Update from Superintendent Dr. Marlon King School New Normal Initiative - South becomes the epicenter for COVID-19
Superintendent Welcome Ceremony My wife, son, and I are sincerely appreciative of the support shown to us last week at the Welcome Ceremony. It meant a great deal to me and my family to see so many board members and stakeholders come out as early as 7:30 a.m. to show support to this administration. I look forward to a strong partnership with this Board, as we make JMCSS the greatest system in the state of Tennessee. Let’s WIN! I want to thank our teachers, staff, community, and all other stakeholders for being so patient around our New Normal Initiative rollout to start school in the Fall. I realize that we, including myself, are all anxious to land on a start date, but as I have often said, we must be equally concerned about the potential stop date. With the South becoming the epicenter, particularly in the southwest region of the nation, of the COVID-19 pandemic, we must create a tight plan to ensure that learning is continuous. Safety, however, is our top priority. Take a look at the graphic below that was published in USA Today around COVID-19 cases. Last week our work teams met and there were great discussions. This week, teams will meet to continue the effort around school re-entry. I am hoping to learn more around the options and opportunities that we will provide families regarding the safest path that they deem necessary for their children. In our board meeting last Thursday, I shared that I believe that teachers need an additional week to plan and prepare. To bring teachers back only a week before students start would not adequately allow our teachers time to prepare for our New Normal Initiative. After all, many of our teachers didn’t have to break down their classroom, store away files, etc., due to the immediate closure of school. Below take a look at our latest update (i.e., survey results from families and teachers) in the Roadmap to Our New Normal Initiative and also listen to our message from chief of staff and public information, Greg Hammond.

TAMEKA NOEL WANTS ANSWERS (Jackson, TN) School Board candidate Dr. Tameka Noel has some serious questions for Jackson-Madison County School System (JMCSS) leadership as plans move forward to re-open during the largest spike in COVID19 cases in Madison County. Dr. Noel, a parent of two JMCSS students, wants answers to some of the following questions, among others, “before I am convinced that it is safe for my children, or anyone else’s child or grandchild, Dr. Tameka Noel to return to school”. And she is not alone. • What are the logistics concerning screening students and teachers upon initial re-entry and day-to-day? • How will positive screenings and any positive tests be handled? • What is the plan for the required continuous cleaning and sanitizing of classrooms, equipment and administrative spaces? • With the recent budget cuts, will the necessary funds be available for continued screening and testing, as well as, for procurement and PPE for students, teachers and staff? - CONT’D ON PAGE 14

Jackson’s Chief of Police Julian Wiser said “when we look at our use of force policy and reviewed those, we are already in compliance.” Governor Lee suggested protocol says use of force policies should be reviewed and updates to make sure choke holds are not used as a technique. Chief Wiser says, “choke holds are prohibited at the Jackson Police Department.Ê Under the JPD guidelines, police officers are obligated Chief J. Wiser to report incidents of misconduct.” “The Governor’s recommendation is that the policy reflects the officers intervene, so we did revise.Ê That was our only policy change that we had.Ê We revised that policy on July 7,” said Wiser. Chief Wiser says deescalation training is important to take control of a possible confrontation. “It’s been the goal of the police Department to have each one of our officers attend crisis intervention training.” Wiser said “ he fired a police officer for excessive abuse of force” He appealed the firing to the civil service commission and the civil service board upheld my decision after the hearing.Ê It’s not really a common occurrence in the City of Jackson,” Wiser said. “Each patrol Captain looks at each use of force that comes in everyday and reviews body cam and in-car camera footage.” Governor Lee’s Law Enforcement Reform Partnership says duty to intervene policies should be reviewed and updated to require officers to act to prevent or stop any act, even by officers that violates law or policy.
HOSPITAL “OVERWHELMED” - CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 The hospital has already expanded its 12 bed COVID-19 intensive care unit to 18 beds and expects to add six more beds in the coming days.Ê As of Thursday, JMCGH was treating 47 patients for the coronavirus virus , 16 of whom were in ICU. In efforts to place less of a burden on any single employee, the hospital has brought back every furloughed clinician staffer.Ê Officials are also working through several plans to stretch the number of patients intensive care nurses can treat and possibly add more staff. JMCGH can staff up to 77 ICU beds based upon its current nursing capacity.Ê However, Thelen said the hospital is looking at ways to eliminate some of the more menial tasks intensive care nurses deal with and allow non ICU nurses to perform them, freeing up time.”Ê Overall the hospital is prepared to treat up to 78 COVID-19 patients - 24 ICU and 54 non ICU before moving on to its next emergency plans.Ê As of Thursday, 553 of 647 hospital beds were in use, an unusually high number of patients for this time of year.Ê Hospital officials attribute high number not just to the coronavirus but a spike in hospitalizations for a wide variety of illiness and injuries” Thelen said “the hospital could not pinpoint it to a single cause, but added the coronavirus COVID-19 has added to an unusually high caseload for other illnesses stretching the hospitals resources “ Active coronavirus cases and hospitalizations have been steadily rising across the 19 rural west Tennessee counties with 1,298 active cases recorded Friday.Ê West Tennessee has also more than doubled the amount of COVID-19 hospitalizations it sees per day.”

They assisted Southwest Agency with distributing meals to students and donated cleaning supplies for Gabriel’s Learning Center. Madison County has seen its largest increase in COVID-19 cases within the last several weeks. Jackson-Madison County General Hospital is “overwhelmed” at almost 90% capacity. City and county government, in conjunction with the Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department, has issued a mandate requiring masks to enter public businesses amidst rising COVID-19 cases - and as of July 14th, there are 504 confirmed cases, 33 more than the previous day. To many parents, a “forced” re-opening by the federal government is not only impractical, but dangerous. Dr. Noel is a candidate for the Position 1 seat in District 5, which covers most of Northwest Jackson, Downtown, LANA, and part of South Jackson. Originally from Texas, Dr. Noel attended Xavier University of Louisiana and Duke University School of Medicine before completing her residency and fellowship training at UTSouthwestern at Dallas and the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, respectively. Haywood County Schools announce reopening plans for upcoming school year

July 13, 2020 Corallys Ortiz - wbbj HAYWOOD COUNTY, Tenn. — For students who attend the Haywood County School System, many changes are expected to take place when schools re-open on August 17. Haywood County Schools Superintendent Joey Hassell says students will have learning options this school year. “We are offering our families a choice, they can do inperson or virtual,” Hassell said. For students that attend in-person, the school system will be following guidelines to ensure social distancing and sanitation procedures. Grades Pre-K to 12 will be divided into groups, with each following different schedules. “Our Pre-K [through] 2 students will be in small groups for the first few weeks, and then they’ll scale up to be assigned an even or odd day,” Hassell said. “Grades 3 to 8 will have their days staggered on even and odd days during the months.” High school students will also be divided into groups, so they can limit the amount of students in the building.

DRAGONS PLACE 67 STUDENT-ATHLETES ON COMMISSIONER’S ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM ATLANTA, Ga. |ÊA record high 1,355 student-athletes were named to the 2019-20 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Commissioner’s All-Academic Team for maintaining at least a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average throughout the 2019-20 academic year. Student-athletes with a 3.2 or higher were considered for all-academic team honors. The number of student-athletes selected in each sport is determined by the number of positions usually involved in that sport. Sixty-seven of the 1,355 student-athletes recognized were from Lane College and 11 teams were represented on the Commissioner’s list. One addition to the list was Jazmyne Jones of Volleyball and Track and Field who carried a 3.8 GPA this past academic year.
