Hummingbirds provide many enthusiast in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee hours of pleasure watching with Ray Jones these feisty birds zoom in to SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO feed then vanish like Superman numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614. into the airways. Most of them migrate to Central America and Mexico in winters and return to the Southern United States in February for breeding. But not all. Some actually stay in West Tennessee the entire winter season. These crafty birds can fly up to 23 miles in a single day and flap their wings up to 80 times a second. You often see red feeders in yards around West Tennessee and they provide hours of enjoyment watching them operate. Some are territorial and will only feed one at a time while others get along with each other and feed several birds at one time. They have personalities and it gets to where you get to know them and give them names because they become like pets and visit you around the same time daily. To attract them to your yard just get some feeders and add one part sugar to four parts water. Do not use food coloring, honey or artificial sweeteners because it can harm them. They get their vitamins naturally from plants and other nectar sources. If you want to add some excitement to your yard get started right away so you and the kids will have enjoyment of hummingbird watching for years to come.

Man faces murder charge in stabbing death of UT Martin student Decora Alexander May 27, 2019ÊÊWBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff OBION COUNTY, Tenn. — A man has been charged in the stabbing death of a University of Tennessee Martin student at an Obion County home. Tony Mosley, 31, of Union City has been charged with first-degree murder in the May 11 stabbing death of 20year-old Decora Alexander, according to the Obion County Sheriff’s Office. Mosley was arrested Sunday afternoon in Memphis on a probation violation charge and transported to the Obion County Jail. Alexander, of South Fulton, was found stabbed to death in Mosley’s home on Joe Fry Lane in Obion County, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities say Mosley is awaiting arraignment on both charges.

Suspect in custody after Humboldt standoff May 24, 2019ÊÊWBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — A standoff in Humboldt Friday morning has ended peacefully with one suspect in custody. Ê According to the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast Regional Task Force, a subject was barricaded inside a home in the 1300 block of Bradford Drive.
U.S. Marshals have identified the man as Kenneth Price. Price was wanted on a federal warrant for violation of supervised release and state charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. U.S. Marshals along with the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, Humboldt Police Department and the 28th Judicial District Violent Crimes and Drug Task Force came to the scene and convinced him to come out. Two others were also taken into custody. Angela Harris and Derrick Harris, who lived at the home, both were arrested on charges of possession of a weapon during the commission of a dangerous felony, accessory after the fact, possession of schedule I drug ecstasy, and possession of marijuana with intent to sell.

731-424-2250 2 charged with abuse after baby tests positive for drugs May 24, 2019ÊÊWBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. — A man and woman previously arrested on drug counts now also face child abuse charges after a baby tests positive for drugs. Jennifer Barner and Daniel Thomas wereÊarrested May 14Êwhen deputies with the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department executed a search warrant at a Dresden home. Investigators found methamphetamine, marijuana, hydrocodone pills, Valium pills, digital scales and a loaded 9 mm pistol, according to the sheriff’s office. The Department of Children’s Services took two children from the home who were then given a hair follicle drug test. One of the children, who is younger than a year, tested positive for amphetamine, methamphetamine, cocaine, benzoylecgonine and marijuana, according to a news release from the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department.

Local mother seeks to inspire others through book By Malorie Paine - CSE News When one woman’s life changed entirely, she says she turned to gratitude journaling to endure the situation. Now, she’s hoping to inspire others get through their own difficult times. Myrtle Russell co-authored “The Stroke that Touched My Heart” to recount the struggles she and her daughter, Mia Russell, experienced following a traumatic stroke. Mia Russell was 37 when she suffered a stroke leaving her unable to use much of the right side of her body. Myrtle became Mia’s caretaker at that time, and she says the year following the stroke was a challenging one. “It was devastating,” Myrtle said. “The laws of nature say that I would be the more likely of the two to have a stroke.” Myrtle wrote a book that she hopes will reach women who are not only suffering from medical disorders, but also women who experience other life changing events, such as become a care-taker again later in life. She says the book isn’t just for those affected by a medical disorder, and the book can be helpful for anyone struggling. Mia had been a nurse for four years prior to the stroke, but suffered memory loss afterwards. She had to relearn the alphabet as well as how to read Mia and Myrtle Russell and write. “The language piece of her brain was affected,” Myrtle said. “We had to use activity books for 3-year-olds. She’s now reading at a fifth or sixth grade level. Her memory isn’t as good as it was.” Myrtle said one thing helped both her and her daughter get through things: gratitude journaling. Gratitude journaling has become a recent trend in positive psychology and helps those who participate in the activity rewire their brains to focus on the joys rather than the worries in their lives. Myrtle said that through the process she had to help Mia learn to be grateful, and this book will help others do the same. The book features examples of gratitude Mia and Myrtle learned and questions to help guide others through the process of learning gratitude. Mia’s longterm goal is to return to school and become a nurse again, but she’s not quite to that stage yet, Myrtle said. “The Stroke that Touched My Heart” is available online now at Amazon and Book Baby, and it will be available through additional retailers after June 8. Myrtle will host a book signing June 8 from 12-5 p.m. at the Double Tree Hotel. The book release is just in time for Mia’s 40th birthday on June 12. Myrtle says the release is a birthday present for her daughter. NMTC Allocation Announcement To: Eric (Jones), The NMTC allocation announcement was made yesterday and 73 CDE organizations around the country received allocations. They in turn can contribute to projects of their choice that are also consistent with the mission of their organization. Typically they will take between 30 and 60 days to evaluate the projects they look at before making a commitment. Of the several CDE’s that have expressed interest in our school project to date project, three of them have received an allocation of between $35,000,000 and $60,000,000 each. Our consultant, Joel Superfon of the Solaris Group, is reaching out to them today to affirm that our project is on track and moving forward. He is also contacting other awardees that have uncommitted available funds to introduce them to our project and offer them the opportunity to participate with us in improving the educational opportunities in Jackson Tennessee. There is a national NMTC conference on June 6 in Washington D.C. Groups from all over the county will be pitching their projects to the CDEs, hoping to attract interest and pledges of support. Our representatives will be there, hopefully with the commitments in hand from the school system, the county and the city to assure prospective New Market Tax Credit investors that we have a viable project that is moving forward to a successful outcome. I have asked our consultant to provide a more formal update for the review of the budget committee, but I wanted to forward this information to you as soon as possible.
