Furthermore, we are relying on what Dr. Bates is advising on us to do on testing, since he handles the medical for our jail.

With all the rain it has been difficult for some gardeners to get started with their favorite outdoor activity. However, there are still some preparation activities that can take place while waiting on the soil to get right for planting. What is good for tomatoes may not be what is necessary for optimum growth for peppers and other plants. Not all fertilizers are the same while some are too rich for certain plants and can burn them as opposed enriching them. There are guides available on line that can navigate you through your journey to a great garden. With these uncertain times this is a great time to focus on gardening in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee. Most people like to plant their garden after Good Friday but you don’t want to let too much time go by because you risk summer heat and pest over taking you hard work. Two men wanted after pregnant woman, child shot in Arkansas, police say by:ÊMitchell Koch - WREG.COM Posted:ÊApr 21, 2020 / 07:41 PM CDT/ MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Authorities are searching for two men after a pregnant woman and a girl were shot Tuesday afternoon in Helena-West Helena, Arkansas. Helena-West Helena police said they are looking for Kourtney Gamble, 19, and Daron Williams, 20, after the child and pregnant woman were shot around 3 p.m. April 21 in the 500 block of Elm Street. The pregnant woman was taken to Regional One Hospital in Memphis in possible critical condition, as she was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound in her lower abdomen. The child was taken to the hospital in noncritical condition. Police did not say how old the girl is. Police said at the time of the shooting, the suspects were in a four-door gold Chevrolet Impala with no license plate.Ê Gamble and Williams were named as persons of interest in the investigation by police. The investigation is still ongoing.Ê Anyone with information on their whereabouts should contact the Helena-West Helena Police Department atÊ870-572-3441.

This is the first COVID-19 death within the sheriff’s department.

Family identified him to WREG as Jeremy Smith, who worked with detainees at the Shelby County Jail.Ê The sheriff’s department said the jailer was one of the 31 employees who the sheriff said last week had tested positive for COVID-19. Twenty-four of those are correctional deputies. Three have been deputies and one reserve officer. As of Tuesday morning, three employees are hospitalized.ÊBut the department said he was not among the three hospitalized workers. They are trying to determine when Jeremy Smith went to the hospital. Sheriff Floyd Bonner talked last week about what they were doing to keep everyone safe.“We have all our employees that wear masks and gloves each and every day. The jail is sanitized each and every day on two shifts. And even on the midnight shift the common areas are being sanitized,” Bonner said.But some are questioning whether things are as safe and clean as they should be. WREG has received complaints about inmates who are supposed to be in quarantine out among others and using the same facilities.ÊOne woman, who did not want to be identified, said her father has been at the jail since last fall, and now she is concerned about the safety of everyone there.Ê “People who are healthy are dying. There is no rhyme or reason to why they are dying,” she said. “It is just gonna be an endless cycle with mass casualties on both parts.” County authorities asked for everyone to remember Smith’s family and friends in their thoughts and prayers.

Are new persons who are arrested and jailed tested for the coronavirus? If not, why not? New intakes are not tested unless they display symptoms.Ê When a new inmate comes into the facility they are met in the sally port and have their temperature taken. They are also ask a series of questions that the CDC and the Health Department has published before entering the building.Ê If the inmate has a temperature but doesn't go over the threshold of 100.4 that the Health Department advised they are still placed in a single cell and are monitored to see if their temps go up.Ê We have not had an inmate whose temperature has risen since coming in and even if their temperature comes down we still continue to monitor them for 24 hours afterward.Ê What does the Sheriff do if/when an inmate complains of coronavirus symptoms, (i.e. what is the procedure to address this problem)? Have any inmates complained about having suspected coronavirus symptoms? If so, how was it addressed? The staff is on the pods 24 hours a day and do regular checks of the inmates.Ê Also the nurses do Medication pass three times a day and communicate with the inmates at that time.Ê Any inmate can turn in a sick call request and they will see the nurse or the nurse practitioner depending on what is the complaint.Ê We have had some inmates say they have the Covid-19.Ê They are immediately removed from the housing area and taken to medical where they are screened.Ê Of the ones that have complained, none have displayed any symptoms or an elevated temperature.Ê We still move them to a single cell and monitor them.ÊÊ We have kept cells available in intake to be able to isolate anyone we felt may offer a threat to the population.Ê We have also kept open a housing area in the jail that we could use as an isolation area if it was needed.Ê So far only the cells in intake have been utilized.Ê Once an inmate is cleared from one of those cells it is completely sanitized before being used again as a precautionary measure.Ê The only inmates that have been in those cells so far are ones with slightly elevated temperatures. What is the present jail population? - CJC population - 313 What is the racial makeup (in numbers and percentages) of the present jail population? African American - 215 (68.69%) - Caucasian - 98 (31.31%) What is the gender makeup (in numbers and percentages) of the present jail population? - Males - 265 - Females - 48 What is the inmate capacity of the jail? CJC capacity - 303 To address overcrowding of the jail and community spread, will the Sheriff release non-violent, low-level jail inmates during the pandemic? If not, why not? If the answer to the prior question is no, Êto address overcrowding of the jail and community spread, will the Sheriff petition the General Sessions and Circuit Judges to release non-violent, low-level jail inmates during the pandemic? The Judges are the only ones who can release anyone from the jail and that would come from the District Attorney. The Sheriff is not going to petition judges for any release.

As I slowed for the red light I saw the man holding the sign. I usually don’t pay a lot of attention if the sign says “Will work for food” or “Trying to get home”, but this one was different. This one said “JUST PLAIN SCREWED”. Simple, brief, bold - I thought it expressed his moodÊ perfectly. I wanted to give him a few bucks and tell him “I know just how you feel”, but I couldn’t. I missed the opportunity to follow up on that impulse because he had picked a place to stand that made it almost impossible to interact with him. He was standing outside a turn lane at the bottom of a ramp. Cars almost never come to a complete stop at this light, not if they are turning. It might have been his last bad decision in a series of bad decisions. I’ll never know. I do know that he didn’t have the look of a dedicated panhandler. His clothes fit. He wasn’t overly dirty. His shirt tail was tucked in. He carried a back pack but it was a small one. He looked like one bad night, not a series of bad nights. Maybe he was a hitchhiker that got put out on the highway. Maybe he was one of those people that sets out to drive from Raleigh to Phoenix with barely enough money for gas and food....and then the car breaks down. Maybe he was just making a preemptive strike against permanent homelessness and desolation. I’ll never know. You’ll never know. I hope by now he is far away and in a place he wants to be. Ê Ê We don’t like to admit it but we all take a little comfort in knowing that there are people that have it worse than us. These people are easier to find now. When the traffic disappears and the people stay home that is probably about the worst that can happen if that supply line is what you depend on. We might hate being restricted to our homes but there is worse. Worse is wanting to be home but you can’t be. The pandemic reminds us of that. by Elvis Rogers Guest ColumnistÊ

The Jackson Madison County Regional Health Department completed another COVID -19 drive through testing at the Jackson Fairgrounds Saturday and Sunday. According to Mallory Cooke, Public Information Officer with the Health Department confirmed that 875 people were tested Saturday April 18 and another 519 people were tested Sunday with a total of 1,394 for this testing period. The Jackson Madison County Regional Health Department has received positive test results for three more confirmed cases of COVID-19 with a total of 100 confirmed cases in Madison County as of Monday. The health department’s epidemiology staff are trying to reach some of these patients, so hospitalization status is not known at this time.Ê We are reaching out to people who had contact with these patients. The Health Department expresses their appreciation to the public for their cooperation and assistance during this testing process.Ê The Tennessee Highway Patrol, Madison County Sheriffs Office, Jackson Police Department, Madison County Fire Department, Medical Center EMS, and first responders were instrumental in providing safety,Ê security and traffic control for the testing events.
