“BIG TEXAS” Skills learned in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee have stretched all the way to Fort Worth, Texas. Andrew “Big Texas” Douglas grew up in the Toone community where he learned to hunt and fish. He became quite skilled in many areas such as training coon dogs, bird dogs, and beagle hounds. He perfected his fishing skills by spending many hours on area lakes including Pickwick Dam. In addition to his skills at hunting and fishing Andrew developed a love for saddle repair and shoe shinning. After traveling to Texas during rodeo season eventuallyÊhe landed a job as the main shoe repair man at a major boot store where all the big time cowboys in the Dallas area come to buy their gear and have their shoes shined. If that’s not enough he is in high demand for his talentsÊin food catering services also.ÊAlthough he honed all those skills in West Tennessee one thing he didn’t learn here was a newly developed love for wild hog hunting. West Tennessee is where he learned to love the outdoors and he took those roots to Texas and is now one of the best Outdoorsman in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. TN GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM By: Kirstin Garris Updated:ÊMar 5, 2019 - 11:13 PM MEMPHIS, Tenn.Ê- Almost 77,000 criminal offenders are under community supervision across Tennessee— that is something a Shelby County man knows all too well. This week, Governor Bill Lee announced plans to increase funding the Electronic Monitoring Indigency Fund and add the usageÊof GPS monitoring to help low risk offenders stay out of jail.Ê “A lot of times you’re in jail because you can’t make bail or bond,” said Bennie Cobb, who is a retired captain with the Shelby County Sheriff’s office.Ê Cobb said this proposal would reduce overcrowding and annual at the correctional facilities. According to Shelby County’s most recent budget, it cost the sheriff’s office nearly $89 million to house adult inmates at 201 Poplar and Jail East. “The ability for someone to get out of jail, frees up bed space, it’s cost effective to the county,”ÊCobb said.Ê“They can go and provide for their families or continue with their careers or their lives.” Gov.ÊLee also issued an executive order to establish the Tennessee Criminal Justice Investment Task Force. Over the next two legislative sessions, the task force will develop legislative and budgetary recommendations for public safety issues.

One injured in a shooting in east Jackson March 5, 2019Ê-Êwbbjtv7 JACKSON, Tenn.–Jackson police officers said they responded to reports of a shots being fired in east Jackson just afterÊ 6 p.m., Tuesday evening. Investigators said shots rang out on Highview Street, just off of North Royal Street. Police cars blocked off the road along with crime tape while officers investigated the area. Investigators said when they arrived, they found one person suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers said that person was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Former McDonald’s employee arrested for taking photos of February Cordova customers’ credit cards 2019 CORDOVA, Tenn.Ê- A former employee at a McDonald’s restaurant in Cordova admitted to skimming customers’ credit cards over a three-month period.Ê
And now, Shelby County deputies located and arrested her.ÊÊ Shanita Railey, 27, admitted to detectives that she took photographs of individuals’ credit and
debit cards for “personal gain,” according to SCSO. Deputies said anyone who visited the McDonald’s at 1206 Houston Levee between December 2018 and
a n d noticed suspicious activity o n their Railey bank account is asked to call detectives at 901-2225600. The Shelby County Sheriff ’s Office did not specify how much money Railey stole from customers over that period. Railey is facing charges of fraudulent use of a credit/ debit card, theft under $1,000 and identity theft.

March 1, 2019 WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — A 27-year-old Maury City man is accused of selling marijuana-oil vape pens at a local high school and advertising it on social media. Undercover agents arrested Edmundo Hidrogo by setting up a fake drug deal at a parking lot in Alamo. Hidrogo is in the Crockett County jail on felony charges for the sale of marijuana. Special Agent Johnnie Carter says the investigation began 10 months ago after complaints of the vape pens being sold at Crockett County High School. Carter says Hidrogo was advertising his sales on Snapchat. According to a release issued by Drug Task Force, Hidrigo was arrested without incident.

JMCSS mourns loss of educator Tiffani Harris March 2, 2019ÊÊWBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson-Madison County Schools was saddened to learn about the loss of a member of their district family. Tiffani Harris was a dedicated educator who believed in the students, teachers, and community members that she served. Her impact on education in JMCSS will be felt for years to come. According to a press release from JMCSS, Harris passed away overnight Thursday, February 28. She was married for almost five years to Vincent Harris and Tiffani Harris they share a four-year-old daughter, Karter. “I had the privilege of working with Tiffani for several years,” said superintendent Dr. Eric Jones. “She was a dedicated educator and valuable member of our community. She will be greatly missed.” Harris joined JMCSS in 2001 as a math teacher and served the district for 16 years as a teacher, math coach, assistant principal, and consulting teacher, according to the release.

JACKSON CITY ELECTION CAMPAIGNS IN FULL SWING The City of Jackson’s upcoming May election for a new city Mayor and nine city council members is in full swing. Candidates campaigns have started putting up signs, taking political ads and making every possible public event to make their case to the people.

For Pete’s Sake Last week’s meeting of the Jackson Madison County School Board’s Long Range Planning Committee was yet another debacle in the ongoing saga surrounding the local school system. This time board member James ‘Pete’ Johnson - not committee chair Morris Merriweather- served as the spark that lite the fire. Johnson, who represents District 1 which includes South Jackson and the Denmark area made a motion to reopen the former Malesus Elementary School and make it an additional hub for the system’s PreK program. Currently there are only two Pre-K classes serving the entire district; one classroom at South Elementary and one classroom at Denmark Elementary. That is a total of approximately 40 seats for an area of the county that has a population bursting at the seems with students in need of attending a Pre-K program. “I made a motion, after very careful consideration,” said Johnson in a recent telephone interview with The CrimeSEEN. “Pre-K gives kids a critical leg up by giving them the tools they need to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.” It may not be known by all, but it is no secret that the Jackson Madison County School System ranks in the lower 10 percent in the state when it comes to insuring students are equipped with the skills they need to read and write by the third grade. Those skills are a critical component of the Pre-K curriculum. Contrary to the thoughts and beliefs of some, Johnson says the LRP Committee had discussed the matter in a board retreat in the Fall of 2018. “It wasn’t a last minute motion or something proposed at the spare of the moment,” said Johnson. Johnson says even though his original request was for an additional 10 classrooms, he realizes that the estimated cost of each class room (about $100,000) might be a bit of a stretch for the system. “I thought that by making the motion and getting the ball rolling -so to speak- we’d be ahead of the game if and when additional funding became available for the Pre-K program,” added Johnson. “Malesus school could help the system improve it’s education equity for students by helping to address the need for more Pre-K classrooms for under-served kids in the district.” This is something Johnson believes is more important than the construction of news schools. Malesus Elementary School was closed three years ago along with a handful of other schools as a part of the school system’s Vision 20/20 Plan. “The Vision 20/20 Plan was very detrimental to the kids in our district,” says Johnson. “Schools were closed haphazardly under the guise of saving the system money. Malesus should have never been closed.” Getting Malesus back up and functional shouldn’t be that big a task either, reasoned Johnson. The roof and HVAC system is relatively new. “Except for a bit of expected maintenance and repairs the building could be fully functional when the funding is in place,” Johnson said. The only thing that might become an issue is the fact that the cafeteria equipment was sold off as soon as the building was closed; which is something in Johnson’s estimation that “never should have happened.” If improving the system is a top priority, make this happen; not for Pete’s Sake, but for the kids. Wallace seeks District 7 City Council Seat JACKSON, Tenn.–Another candidate has thrown her hat into the ring for City Council District 7 seat. Marda Wallace took her petition into the Madison County Election Commission, Tuesday morning. Wallace went in with a small group of supporters. Andre Darnell announced Thursday that he is running for the Jackson City Council seat in District 4, which includes a portion of east Jackson. Darnell, who is from Jackson, hosted a campaign Andre Darnell kickoff in east Jackson this evening. “Basically, I saw the lack of attention that’s happening in the district, I wanted to bring that voice; I wanted to be a voice of the community. The people in the district that have been talking about the lack of businesses, the lack of affordable homes, and I wanted to be a voice for that,” said city council candidate Andre Darnell. Darnell will face incumbent Harvey Buchanan for the District 4 council seat.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (March 2, 2019) - Senior guard A N T R I C E ␣ M C C O Y saw time winding down on the shot clock, drove the lane and, as she was fouled, threw up a prayer. And, someone answered it. After converting the old-fashioned three-point play, Lane College women’s basketball team had a six-point cushion against Kentucky State with 43 seconds remaining as the Lady Dragons downed the Thorobreds 44-42 to win their firstever SIAC Conference Championship on Saturday evening on the court of the Bill Harris Arena at the Birmingham Crossplex. ”I heard my teammates yelling ‘shot clock’ so I’m hesitating, I did a move and went by her and she fouled me and I just threw it up,” McCoy said. “I looked up and it was in the goal. That was it. It was a big play and that’s what got us that lead.” McCoy finished with 11 points, three steals, and four rebounds. The other senior on the squad, guard ADDIE MCNEELY finished with a game-high 14 points. She added three rebounds, a block, a steal and an assist in the win. McNeely␣ said she knew the Lady Dragons were going to win a championship, she just didn’t know it would be her senior year. “I knew that we were going to get here eventually,” McNeely said. “We’ve been working real hard these past three games up till now. We deserved it. The team that worked the hardest got the W.” ALEXIS HARRIS finished with seven points five rebounds and a game-high five steals. She said she knew the team was bringing home the trophy before the season even started. “I am so happy,” Harris said. “I didn’t play last year and I told the president, I said, ‘This year I’m playing and we’re getting a ring and that’s what we did.” CHASITY MOORE also is in her first season with the Lady Dragons. She said the struggles the team had earlier in the season were just preparation for this tournament. “I’m at a loss for words right now,” Moore said. “We had a losing season so for us to come and play like we did in the tournament with no losses, I think our season prepared us for that. Didn’t anybody expect us to come out and play like we played and to come hungry. When we lost all those games it gave us something to fight for in the tournament. And that’s what made the difference.” Both McCoy and McNeely were named to the All Tournament team while their teammate, PORCHE’ HANNAH was named Tournament MVP. For her, it was all about proving herself in her first year eligible for play.

For her, all glory is given to God. “From the beginning, I knew I had something special,” Anderson said. “But I also knew it was going to be a challenge.␣ “But, through my faith, I try to inspire them through my beliefs. And, by me studying God’s words, I think that helped me. Because I’m not just dealing with young ladies on the court, I’m dealing with in life.
