HAYWOOD COUNTY DRUG BUST Agents were hard at work in Brownsville / Haywood County on Tuesday where more than 4 pounds of marijuana, a loaded handgun with a spare magazine, scales, a large amount of paraphernalia and proceeds of the sale of marijuana were seized pursuant to an investigation and search warrant on Oak Ct. one male and one female are / were in the custody of Sheriff Garrett. The male is a convicted felon with prior drug felonies and prohibited from possessing firearms.

JACKSON, Tenn. Community members met a celebrity at a local college Friday. Radio personality and stand-up comedian Rickey Smiley was at Jackson State Community College Friday morning, meeting and greeting everyone from the community. “I am on the radio here in Jackson and wanted to come and just be out in the community,”Smiley said. “With being switched over to Urban AC, a new demographic, so I am excited about that.” Smiley is slated to take over the Tom Joyner Morning Show, as Joyner retired Friday. At the event, Smiley was presented the key to the city by Jackson City Councilman Johnny Dodd. The big buck stayed hidden for a long time before he was able to finally time the meeting just right. Cory hunts for trophy bucks and often lets smaller bucks walk in order to help them mature into dominate bucks for future hunting. Mature backs like this one travel at times when you are least expected and take routes not used by other deer. In order to harvest him Cory had to think outside the box by figuring out his pattern and capitalizing on it. BROWNSVILLE POLICE IDENTIFY MAN KILLED IN MORNING SHOOTING CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Brownsville Assistant Police Chief Kelvin Evans says the shooting may have been caused by a fight on Facebook. “Apparently, it was some ongoing situation between the two, and it ended up with this here,” Evans said. “Xavier Morris received one gunshot wound to the chest area.” Evans said officers responded to the home around 9 a.m. Tuesday, and found several people inside the home where the shooting happened. Police say those witnesses who were in the home were able to identify 32-year-old Michael Shutes, Jr. as the alleged shooter, and told investigators he ran from the house after the shooting. The gun investigators believe was used in the shooting was found underneath a house during a search of the area. “We don’t know the exact caliber yet, may be a smaller caliber, but we’re not sure until the autopsy is done,” Evans said. Evans said the shooting has been ruled self-defense, and Shutes is not expected to face charges in connection with Morris’ death. No other injuries were reported in the shooting.

Police say Allbrightís death is connected to two other shootings late Monday night and early Tuesday morning. In a news release, police say officers responded to a shooting at a home in the 200 block of Walnut Street around 11:50 p.m. Monday. Police say 26-year-old Shartavis Rollins, of Jackson, was injured in the shooting. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, according to police. Police say officers then responded to a report of shots fired on Foxlea Cove around 3:50 a.m. The release says there was damage to the home from the shooting, but no one inside was injured. Investigators say they believe the three incidents are connected, and are not random. The investigations remain ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call the Jackson Police Department at (731) 425-8400 or Crime Stoppers at (731) 4248477.

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. - A Brownsville woman has been charged with TennCare fraud and identity theft. Tamaria Whitley (RIGHT) , 21, has been charged with TennCare fraud and identity theft after allegedly allowing another person to use her TennCare card, according to a news release. The Office of Inspector General, along with the Brownsville Police Department, announced the arrest Tuesday. Investigators say Whitley allowed a person who was not enrolled in TennCare to use the card to receive dental services, according to the release. The release says Whitney allowed the person to use the card on 12 different occasions, leading to a total of approximately $7,500 being paid in Whitley’s name. If convicted, Whitley could face up to 24 years in prison, the release says. If you suspect TennCare fraud, call 1-800-4333982, or visit the Office of Inspector General website and click “Report TennCare Fraud.”

SHOP WITH A COP 12-year-old Taeshon Bowers was partnered with Jackson Police Department Investigator Kyle Hamilton in ‘Shop with a Cop’, Tuesday, December 10. He chose to get gifts for the homeless that night. Because of Bowers’ decision, members of the JPD CID unit decided to surprise him by putting their own money together to buy over $500.00 worth of gifts, including clothes and toys, for him, his brother and sister. Bowers was very appreciative of the gifts from our Jackson Police Departmentís CID unit.

AS 2019 COMES TO A CLOSE LET’S CELEBRATE HOW FAR WE HAVE COME AT JMCSS! It is so easy to highlight those things that went wrong this past school year. Optimism is contagious and students currently enrolled in Jackson Madison County schools have much to celebrate as Christmas break approaches. The majority of the schools improved their state accountability scores. There are significant achievement advances in Math as the number of schools meeting expectations increased from 8 to 13. Significant gains have been made over the past two years. Progress takes time as you only have to see the excitement of both students and teachers as they respond to the new reading curriculum across the school system. If given time the advances in reading scores will reflect progress in all areas as students moving from third to forth grade will be equipped with the ability to be able to learn how to learn. Trust the process. “Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education. The human mind is our fundamental resource.” ~John F. Kennedy When we begin to learn lessons from the past then we can move forward together! If you want to find out how JMCSS is gaining traction to move forward in a positive direction; ask a teacher. Stop by the central office and speak with the team that has made adopting a high-quality curriculum a top priority. Ask a principal how continuity is working for their students in their schools. There are 200 days in the school calendar. That means there are 165 days that these students will need the support of parents, family, and community to continue in the right direction in their academic journey. Where were the parents? I attended the school board meeting on Thursday evening and listened to Mr. Torres from the TSBA. He stated that they had held 5 community meetings of which 116 attended. That is less than 25 in attendance per meeting. He also mentioned the number of respondents to the online survey to solicit opinions from parents was 159. After listening to the discussion for the recommended qualifications for the next superintendent had been met and exceeded by the previous superintendent. Perhaps the best course of action is to slow down as Mr. Washington continues to communicate, advocate, and promote the current plan. The teachers have expressed a desire for continuity and support and there seems to be considerable evidence to indicate that this is showing significant gains for both the school system and the community. What is the rush? Take the time and effort to find out what over a thousand parents think instead of a few hundred. Notice is hereby given that on November 21 of 2019 Letters Testamentary (or of Administration as the case may be) in respect of the estate of EULA V. YARBROUGH, who died February 24, 2019, were issued to the undersigned by the Probate Court of Madison County, Tennessee. All persons, resident and non-resident, having claims, matured or unmatured, against the estate are required to file the same with the Clerk of the above-named Court on or before the earlier of the dates prescribed in (1) or (2) otherwise their claims will be forever barred (1) (A) Four (4) months from the date of the first publication (or posting, as the case may be) of this notice if the creditor received an actual copy of this notice to creditors at least sixty (60) days before date that is four (4) months from the date of the first publication (or posting); or (B) Sixty (60) days from the date the creditor received an actual copy of the notice to creditors, if the creditor received the copy of the notice less than sixty (60) days prior to the date that is four (4) months from the date of the first publication (or posting) as described in (1)(A); or (2) Twelve (12) months from the decedent’s date of death. All persons indebted to the above Estate must come forward and make proper settlement with the undersigned at once.

LIVING HER DREAM Real estate for Tara Skinner is more than a job, “it’s my passion,” says Skinner an agent with Century 21 Reality of Jackson. Skinner is spearheading the movement to bring more new and affordable homes to East Jackson. “I grew up in the Douglas Court area of Jackson,” said Skinner. “I grew up near the ‘Onion Field.’ We had a lot of love for one another and for our neighborhood. There was a lot of pride in ‘the bottom.’” Skinner says one day while playing outside, she made an discovery that literally changed her life. “We were playing and I ran across an old doll house,” said the East Jackson native who once dreamed of selling new homes in her old neighborhood. “I must have been maybe 9 or 10 years old at the time. I remember dragging that doll house home and thinking that one day I was going to build houses in my neighborhood,” said Skinner with her signature smile. Even then she knew that she wanted people who loved their neighborhood to be able to become homeowners. “I wanted people who qualified to purchase a home to be able to build news homes affordable to their incomes- in the neighborhood they love,” “I’ve been on this journey for sixteen years now and it hasn’t been an easy process,” added Skinner. “It’s one thing to sell homes that were built years ago, they’re all over the place. But for me to sell a newly constructed home in the area of town where I was raised is another story. That’s why I became a real estate agent,” she stressed.
