Introducing Dr Thomas Meikle – Crieff Hydro’s 1868 founder. Hailing from Melrose, Thomas first honed his skills alongside his father at Loch-Head Hydropathic in Aberdeen. Driven by a vision to open his own “Hydro”, Dr Meikle scoured the country for an ideal site before finally settling on the Strathearn Valley. Crieff was considered perfect thanks to its central location, new railway connections, fresh air and lovely countryside. Most important was the quality of the springs – the essential ingredient for Meikle’s “hydrotherapeutic” practice. To this day we draw our own water from the estate; this restaurant bears Dr Meikle’s name and his fine establishment has remained under the care of five generations of the same family ever since.
