In 2023 we saw the revival of the Junior Rugby League within Moorends, Thorne and surrounding areas.
From what was a 10-year absence, the journey began when Gavin Brittan formed a junior team so his son could play for his hometown club with his friends. This quickly gained momentum and the team went from strength to strength, resulting in the under-15s being crowned 2024 Yorkshire Division 4 Champions.
The newfound interest for Junior Rugby League in Moorends then attracted new volunteers, which led to the introduction of other age groups such as the under-13s, under-9s, and finally the minis section - four-to six-year-olds.
In addition to the children, they now have a thriving open age and masters team aimed at the older generation.
The club is also proud to celebrate the launch of its newly formed under-14s team, led by coach Graeme Swift, which looks forward to arranging friendly fixtures throughout 2026 as the team continues to grow.
All sections of the club are amalgamated into one club under the leadership of Club Secretary Gavin Brittan.

The First Team reignited in 2024 with coach Dan Hornsby primary objective being to create a fun environment for locals to make friends and stay healthy.
After a series of successful friendly matches, the First Team have now competed competitively in 2025 for the first time in four years and are pleased to have been accepted into the league again for 2026.
Masters Rugby League is led by club veteran Ivor Chowings and is strictly a social version of the sport for players aged 35+ for Men’s Masters.
The club is everything that the community stands for - they are run by volunteers for the local people of Moorends and surrounding areas.
Its ethos is to keep fees to an absolute minimum and maximise the enjoyment for local children and families.
Everyone is welcome to join their team regardless of ability. Training times and coaches contact details can be found via their Facebook page: Moorends-Thorne Marauders RLFC

This year’s fayre will take place on Saturday 15 August from 11am at East Lane Playing Field, Stainforth
Friends of Peacock Park began four years ago quite by chance. Chris Waite attended a meeting with Shaping Stainforth, where it was suggested she would be a great person to help with the local park. Chris invited her friend Lisa to come along, and from that simple step, the group was born.
Chris, along with Lisa Giggins, runs most of the park’s day-to-day operations. They have often struggled to find extra help, but this year they were pleased to recruit Jemma and Margaret, who have been fantastic.
This year’s Summer Fayre will take place on Saturday 15th August, starting at 11am exclusively for SEND families.
They introduced this approach at their first gala, and many other groups have since adopted it, as it creates a calmer, more accessible experience for families with disabilities.
The event will open to the wider public from 12pm.
The event is a highlight of the community calendar, bringing people together in a fun setting and giving children a break from screens for a few hours.
There will be plenty to enjoy throughout the day, including free hair braiding and face painting, more than 50 stalls selling homemade goods and bakes, a funfair, and games for all ages.
They are also hosting their second Colour Run, entry just £2, following the success of
last year’s event. Anyone can take part with participants completing one lap of the new field path and getting covered in paint at three points along the route. Simply arrive 30 minutes before the start to register.
Last month, they started a marching band that will not perform at this year’s gala, but will be on display with their uniforms and instruments as they look to recruit members. They welcome everyone, regardless of age or ability, and in just five weeks, they have built a group of around 15 members, ranging from age three to 17 and are especially looking for older members who can help learn and play instruments, particularly drums.
