Enhancing lives through friendship
In December 2016, Emma Waistnage was told she was being made redundant the following March from her position as a Befriender with the charity Sue Ryder. She told Thorne and Moorends Local: “I was devastated! I didn’t want a new job. I cried for days. My manager approached me and suggested I set up my own befriending service but I was so full of self-doubt. It was actually my service user who persuaded me to do it.” So in 2017 Friends With Emma was born. Friends with Emma is a social service, which helps get socially isolated elderly and vulnerable adults out into the community, whether that’s to a favourite cafe or a trip to the hairdressers.
Emma continued: “I just wanted to continue doing something I really enjoyed whilst earning enough to support my family.” Friends With Emma now has four employees and one who provides ad-hoc services too. Their small team is equally kind, caring and passionate about delivering a continuous, reliable safe service. Shortly, they are becoming a limited company and they will add a community group, Amity to run alongside their service. Amity will have pop up ‘lonely tables’ where they will invite people to join them in a cafe for a free cuppa and a chat. Keep an eye out for more exciting new community projects coming up.
