We hope you are having a brilliant summer! The school holidays will soon be coming to an end and we hope all our little readers are looking forward to starting a new school year. But fear not, autumn isn’t here just yet, we will hopefully have a few more weeks of sun!
In this edition, we promote Glow Walk 2026 - can you go the extra mile for Lindsey Lodge this year and help them fund another year of care?
We also speak to Julie Johns, from Messingham, who will be skydiving at Skydive Hibaldstow on Saturday 3rd October in memory of her brother, and in support of Lindsey Lodge Hospice. Tell us about Lindsey Lodge Hospice?
The Hospice has been in Scunthorpe for 33 years, and receives amazing support from our local community – some of the volunteers who helped raise the initial money to build the Hospice are still helping us now! We have become a valued resource in our area, and aim to support as many families as we can. Situated in the heart of North Lincolnshire, Lindsey Lodge Hospice and Healthcare provides high quality, specialist palliative care and wellbeing services to local people and families living with progressive life-limiting illnesses.
What happens in the Glow Walk?
The Glow Walk is an annual five-or 10-mile walk around Scunthorpe, where participants pledge to raise at least £50 per person in sponsorship to support Lindsey Lodge Hospice.
Each year we are blown away by the wonderful community spirit displayed on the evening along with the generosity of the people in our area.
Last year we had 860 people sign up to take part and raised an incredible £61,700!
Why is the Glow Walk important to the community?
It costs £5.2 million per year to run the Hospice, with only 30% of that coming from the government. Therefore, we rely on fundraising and retail to raise the additional funds required to keep our facility operational. We offer end of life and palliative care for everyone in North Lincolnshire, and every penny raised really does contribute towards the care.

Julie Johns, from Messingham, will be skydiving at Skydive Hibaldstow on Saturday 3rd October in memory of her brother, in support of Lindsey Lodge Hospice
Julie was born in Messingham, and grew up there, enjoying a wonderful upbringing and loved village life.
She attended Frederick Gough School and then studied at North Lindsey College.
Julie sadly lost her mum to pancreatic cancer in April 2014 and her brother passed away from a brain tumour in May 2014. It was a devastating experience and she has since gone on to raise funds for different charities.
Julie’s brother, Michael Lockwood, joined the army at 19 and never looked back. He served as a Staff Sergeant with 1 Royal Horse Artillery and completed several tours in Afghanistan and Bosnia before passing away at 36.
Brave fundraiser supports Hospice through
He was diagnosed with a grade 4 astrocytoma brain tumor two years before he passed away. Treatment could only extend his life for a short time. He married after his diagnosis and had two beautiful girls with his wife, Laura Lockwood.
She told Scunthorpe Journal: “I am doing the skydive because my brother was lovingly cared for in a hospice down south - but I wanted to keep the fundraising local.
“A skydive has always been on my bucket list! I have thought about doing it for the last few years and saw it again this year for Lindsey Lodge Hospice and thought this is the perfect time.

“My motto is every little helps and even if I don’t raise much I will get a real sense of achievement that I may have helped at least one person.
“I am doing this amazing challenge to help Lindsey Lodge Hospice continue to provide vital end-of-life care to patients and families within North Lincolnshire.”
Julie is also a volunteer on an app called ‘be my eyes’ - this is for people who are blind or have low vision and need assistance.
Julie has previously raised money for Brain Tumour Research, Pancreatic Cancer UK twice, and Dementia Care.
