This month, we announce the winners of this year’s Goole and Howdenshire Business Excellence awards. A huge congratulations to all the winners, it’s such a great event that brings so many brilliant local businesses together to celebrate everyone’s success and we cannot wait for next year’s already.

A new era begins: Howden Social Club opens its doors with revitalised leadership

Howden Social Club is where the community comes together. It’s the heart of the town, a place to meet, connect, and enjoy good company. Members gather to socialise, share stories, and build lasting friendships

Howden Social Club has reopened and is now an exclusive destination for snooker enthusiasts, featuring the town’s only full-size snooker table reserved for members.

They can host unforgettable events in their spacious function room, complete with a stage, dance floor, and seating for over 100 guestsavailable for hire exclusively to members. Rachael, Events and Bookings Manager told Our Goole: “The previous committee worked very hard to keep the club going, however, with limited numbers and nobody coming forward to help with the running of the club, they had no choice but to close the doors. We need to really appreciate the efforts of the old committee.

“After the club closed, an emergency meeting was held with people who had since come forward and shown interest in joining the committee.

“We then had literally seven days to form a new committee, order stock, sort equipment and organise training to get the doors back open that weekend.”

With exciting times ahead, get ready for weekly live music, energetic party nights, fun quizzes, and, fingers crossed, the return of bingo!

Become a volunteer and support pet owners in your community

The Cinnamon Trust are currently looking for new volunteers in Goole and the surrounding area to help them provide vital support to local pet owners

The Cinnamon Trust is the only national charity helping older people and the terminally ill to care for and plan for the future care of their pets.

With the help of over 20,000 compassionate volunteers across the UK, they help owners keep their pets for as long as possible, providing practical support such as dog walking, cat brushing, cleaning litter trays, taking pets to the vets, and offering shortterm foster care during hospital stays.

Besides the practical support, they also offer all pet owners the chance to plan ahead for their companion’s future. Through their pet profiling service, owners can entrust their pets in their

forever care, and take comfort in knowing their pet will always be cared for in a loving home when the time comes.

They are currently looking for new volunteers in Goole and the surrounding areas to help them provide this vital support to local pet owners, support that can be the difference between someone keeping their furry best friend or having to say goodbye. Volunteering with The Cinnamon Trust is flexible, and they welcome anyone who can offer as little as an hour or two a week.

FROM A POLICE PERSPECTIVE: Tools to tackle anti-social behaviour

This month, Goole policing team highlight how antisocial behaviour is not a low-level offence and how it devastates the lives of victims and communities and can be a precursor to more serious crime.

PC Emma Campbell and PC Joanne Skinner assist in reviewing ASB incidents across the force to reduce repeat victims, protect those who are most vulnerable, as well as targeting prolific and repeat offenders. They have a key aim:

“We want to reduce or remove anti-social behaviour, developing long term strategies to manage any issues. We’re constantly looking at ASB remedies both locally and nationally to identify techniques.”

The most common misconception is that anti-social behaviour is only committed by young people, but issues such as homelessness, street drinking, neighbour disputes and mental health issues all contribute to antisocial behaviour issues.

Having a strong partnership working with local authorities, housing associations, victim support and youth justice to name but a few and information sharing has enabled us to improve the way we deal with antisocial behaviour and the results we get.

So, what tools do we have at our disposal?

Criminal Behaviour Orders (CBO)

Replacing ASBOs in 2014. CBOs were brought in to prohibit crime and anti-social behaviour and robust partnership working to assist with diversion to external support such as drug and alcohol services referrals.

Community Protection Notices (CPN)

Issued to prevent unreasonable behaviour that negatively impacts the community’s quality of life.

Closure orders

A closure order is a legal action to deal with issues at a specific property. It can prevent access to a property for a maximum of three months, intending to provide relief and protection to victims of persistent anti-social behaviour.

Numerous closure orders have been issued on properties such as business premises or residential properties across the Humberside Police force area since 2026.

This aims to prevent repeated behaviours that can intimidate neighbours, and communities, who end up living in fear or have been too scared to report things to the police.

The winners of the 2026 Goole & Howdenshire Business Excellence Awards were announced at a sell-out black tie awards ceremony on Friday 10th April

With over 110 entries this was the most successful year ever. Around 339 people attended the dinner where the winners were announced.

Trump’s military ‘adventure’ unleashes mortgage mayhem

The Iran war and the consequent fear of rampant inflation has led to mayhem in the mortgage sector with knock-on effects for the housing market.

Data from independent service Moneyfacts shows that the average shelf life of a mortgage is now just eight days – the lowest since Moneyfacts’ record began in 2011.

The previous lowest average lifespan of a mortgage was in July 2023, at just 12 days.

The average shelf-life is now lower than at the start of October 2022 (15 days) and the disastrous Liz Truss mini-budget.

Overall product choice shrank month-on-month, down by 1,283 options, falling below 7,000

options for the first time since November 2025.

The current pool of 6,201 options is at its lowest count in two years – in March 2024 it was 6,004.

Lenders pulled products from sale last month due to uncertainty over the future path of interest rates.

The start of 2026 appeared promising, especially for borrowers about to remortgage, but it’s all changed.

The tide could turn once the markets feel more confident about future rate pricing, but borrowers who are due to come off a deal soon will be incredibly frustrated by mortgage rate hikes.

Picnic in the Park returns for its 11th year

Why not head down to West Park, Goole, on Sunday 31st May, 12-5pm, to enjoy a fun-filled day with the local community and help raise funds for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust

Picnic in the Park is an annual fundraising event held at West Park in Goole, raising funds and awareness for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Trust.

Throughout the day there are live bands playing in the bandstand, various stalls selling anything from jewellery to plant pots, charity stalls, as well as a funfair held by Harvey’s Amusements for the children and numerous food stalls.

West Park Cafe will be open, which is run by another local charity, The Green Team.
