Hello and welcome to your July edition of Our Goole.

So far, the weather has been a little hit and miss, let’s hope the sun comes out in force for July, eh?

This month will see the school year come to an end - we hope you have some brilliant plans organised with the family over the summer holidays, whether that’s jetting off somewhere or staying local.

In this edition, we promote Swinefleet Gala, which is bringing the 1940s theme to life. It’s a community day open to local residents and anyone else who’d like to

pop along and join in the fun. We also showcase Goole United JFC who attended the Manchester United Play on the Pitch tournament. Both their U9s and U10s did a sponsored 3km football dribble to raise funds to allow them to get to the tournament.

Step back in time at Swinefleet Gala 2026

This year’s event is bringing the 1940s theme to life - it’s a community day open to local residents and

anyone else who’d like to come along and join in the fun

The Gala is extremely important to the community as it brings people together and helps keep local traditions alive.

Most importantly, it provides an opportunity for people to socialise, strengthen community spirit, and enjoy a day together in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

This year’s Gala promises to be a fantastic day for all ages. Attractions and activities will include:

• 1940s vintage dancing and singing

• Vintage vehicles

• A licensed bar

• Traditional Gala games, including welly wanging and tug of war

• Stalls and food vendors

• Alcohol refreshments

• Children’s games and activities

• Lawn games

• Bouncy castles

• Entertainment and much more

There will be plenty to see and do throughout the day, making it a great event for families, friends and visitors alike.

FROM A POLICE PERSPECTIVE: Neighbourhood Policing Teams and Roads Policing join together for hotspot policing

In this issue, the Roads Policing Team talks to us about how they respond to some of the most serious incidents on our roads across the force area.

Whether patrolling busy dual carriageways or rural country lanes, officers are out every day proactively tackling speeding, checking vehicle conditions and ensuring motorists are using the roads safely and responsibly.

Across the East Riding, officers have identified a number of hotspot locations where serious collisions and fatalities have occurred in recent years. These incidents have been linked to a range of factors including dangerous driving, excessive speed and the use of drugs or alcohol behind the wheel.

To address these concerns and increase police visibility in these areas, our Roads Policing Team are working closely with Neighbourhood Policing Teams across the East Riding. Together, officers are increasing the number of dedicated patrol hours in these locations, providing a visible deterrent to dangerous driving while identifying offences and engaging with road users.

Chief Inspector Derek Hussain from our Specialist

Operations Unit said: “Everyone has the right to travel safely on our roads, whether they are driving, cycling, riding a motorcycle or simply walking. Sadly, we continue to see incidents where poor decision-making behind the wheel has devastating consequences for individuals, families and communities.

“By identifying hotspot locations and increasing patrol activity in those areas, we are focusing our resources where they can have the greatest impact. This collaborative approach between Roads Policing and Neighbourhood Policing allows us to maintain a visible presence across the East Riding and wider Humberside area.

“Our aim is not simply to react when something has gone wrong. We want to prevent collisions from happening in the first place, educate drivers where appropriate and take robust enforcement action against those who choose to put others at risk.”

East Riding Neighbourhood Policing Chief Inspector Tom Stevens said: “Neighbourhood Policing is about far more than responding to incidents. It is about being visible, engaging with our communities and proactively addressing the issues that matter most to local people.

“Road safety is a concern regularly raised by residents, and by dedicating patrol time to these hotspot locations, our officers can play an important role in making our roads safer. Working alongside Roads Policing colleagues allows us to target areas of concern, disrupt dangerous driving behaviours and provide reassurance to those who live and travel in the East Riding.

“For those who believe they can speed, drive recklessly or ignore the law on our roads, the message is simple – we are out there, we are watching, and if offences are identified, action will be taken. Our priority is keeping people safe and reducing the likelihood of serious or fatal collisions.”

Goole United JFC attended the Manchester United Play on the Pitch tournament

For many of the players, opportunities like this do not come around very often, so there was a real sense of excitement from the moment the tournament was confirmed. The chance to play in a Premier League stadium and on their pitch gave the occasion extra significance and motivated everyone involved.

Maddy Barker, Clubs Welfare Office, Goole United AFC/ JFC told Our Goole: “The

days were incredibly exciting and memorable for everyone involved, coaches, players, families and all the supporters who came along. From arriving at the stadium to going in the Manchester United changing rooms and walking out the tunnel on to the pitch - there was an amazing atmosphere for everyone.

“Our U10s battled all day and came 6th and our U9s fought throughout the day and came 2nd in the cup final. The experience itself was something

that will stay with the players, coaches and supporters for a long time.

“For two of our coaches, Matty and Niall, who are both Manchester United fans - it was unbelievable for them to be able to coach their sons on that pitch.

“I would just like to thank everyone who helped make the experience possible, including the organisers, coaches, volunteers, supporters, and families who continue to support the club. Opportunities like this would not happen without the hard work of people behind the scenes who dedicate their own time and energy to helping local football and sport thrive. Their commitment makes a huge difference to the players and the wider community.

“Most importantly, experiences like this show the positive impact football can have on young people and communities. It is not only about winning

matches but it is about creating memories that last a lifetime, building confidence, and giving people opportunities they will never forget. We are extremely proud of everyone involved and excited about what the future holds for us here at Goole United.”

Goole United AFC was established in 2012 as an adults’ football club, since then the club has continued to thrive and grow.

In 2024 Goole United JFC was established starting with one junior team which expanded to four teams and from the new season in September 2026 they will have 6 Junior teams.

Goole United is a community focused football club that is

passionate about developing players, creating opportunities, and bringing people together through sport.

The club works very hard to provide a positive and inclusive environment for players of all ages and abilities.

As a whole club, we have players, ranging in age from five to 62. They are always competing on the pitch, the club places a strong emphasis on teamwork, discipline, personal development, and creating incredible, memorable experiences for everyone involved.

Goole United AFC/JFC are always keen to welcome new players, volunteers, and supporters into the club for

both the adult and junior teams. There are opportunities for more than just players as well, they are always grateful for support from volunteers, local businesses, parents/carers, and community members who want to contribute to the growth of the club.

This month, local property expert David Leake from The Property Experts talks to us about the breakthrough scheme and what this means

Lloyds Banking Group is launching a scheme for first-time buyers requiring just a £5,000 deposit.

Since May, first-time buyers with Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland looking at homes worth up to £300,000 may be eligible for the £5,000 deposit mortgage.

Shared ownership schemes, new build homes and gifted deposits are not eligible. The qualifying criteria and product details are: maximum purchase price - £300,000, maximum loan - £295,000 and minimum deposit - £5,000.

I believe in quality not quantity which is why I limit the number of clients i work with so I can achieve a great result every time.

According to the most recent figures published by UK Finance (May 2025), the average first-time buyer household - that isn’t getting help with a deposit - had an income of £65,351 and bought a home worth £279,381.

Based on a 5% minimum, that means they need to save around £14,000 for a deposit, before any other costs like legal fees or furniture, fixtures and fittings.

First-time buyers looking at house prices below, at and even above average purchase prices, could see their required deposit fall considerably compared to a 5% deposit.
