Hello and welcome to your June/July edition of Doncaster Echo.

How are we already nearly halfway through the year? Summer is here and we cannot wait for BBQs with family and friends. If you are jetting off somewhere this summer, we hope you have a wonderful holiday.

This issue we showcase Infinity Kitchen Designs - born out of a desire to give people the straight-forward, reliable and bespoke full service needed when they come to refit or revamp their kitchen, bedrooms and home office.

We also promote The Hygiene Bank Doncaster - a grassroots, people-powered charity working

across Doncaster to address hygiene poverty and the barriers it creates to health, dignity, and full participation in society.

And, the Bitter About Litter Project: Armthorpe Parish Council leads the clean-up charge.

Breaking barriers: Empowering Doncaster through hygiene access

The Hygiene Bank Doncaster is a grassroots, people-powered charity working across Doncaster to address hygiene poverty and the barriers it creates to health, dignity, and full participation in society

The Hygiene Bank Doncaster provides hygiene, personal care, and household cleaning products to vulnerable individuals and families through a borough- wide network of 88 community partner organisations, including food banks, schools, hospices, supported housing, maternity services, and family and community hubs.

They believe it is not right that feeling clean should be a luxury or a privilege. Yet many individuals and families in our community are living in poverty and cannot afford basic hygiene essentials.

Hygiene poverty is often hidden, but its effects can be life- changing. Without access to basic hygiene products, people often struggle with their health, confidence, and overall wellbeing. These struggles include children missing school, and adults facing barriers to work and general social exclusion.

Not all children in Doncaster have their own toothbrush. Surveys in local schools showed that in some schools under 50% of children have access to

a toothbrush - either not at all or shared between other family members.

At present they support requests for over 50,000 children and adults a year. The project has been running for over seven years, during which time they have distributed more than 225 tons of essential hygiene and cleaning products.

School summer holidays significantly increase the impact of hygiene poverty because they remove the everyday structures that quietly protect low -income families during term time, while adding new costs and pressures. The holidays bring unavoidable extra costs- higher food bills, increased water bills and energy use and childcare costs.

The Hygiene Bank Doncaster would love to hear from new supporters, volunteers, and partners who want to make a difference. Hygiene poverty can affect anyone - and by working together as a community, meaningful change is possible.

Bitter About Litter Project: Armthorpe Parish Council leads the clean-up charge

Armthorpe Parish Council represents the community at the most local level, working to ensure residents’ voices are heard and reflected in key decisions. The Council oversees important facilities, supports local projects and helps guide development so the village continues to thrive. Its work is driven by 15 voluntary parish councillors and a committed team of thirteen staff, all dedicated to delivering high-quality services for the people of Armthorpe.

We spoke to Lea, Cleanup Champion, Bitter About Litter Project: “I’m a resident of Armthorpe and the Cleanup Champion for the Armthorpe Parish Council. Back in 2021, The Parish Council had advertised looking for an individual to take on the task of litter picking around the village, and supporting volunteers who would like to join in and help make the village litter free. I took on the role and instantly could see there was scope to make the role achieve more.

“At basic level, I venture out around the village, litter picking weekly in an endeavour to keep Armthorpe’s streets and green spaces litter free, spreading the word about the importance of taking pride in our community and caring for the environment. It is not just myself out there,

there are regular community clean-up sessions I organise with the most dedicated volunteers who join in at every opportunity.

“For the last five years I have collected on average 50-100 bags each month from the streets and green spaces of the village, that’s not to mention the fly-tipping cleared up, recycling and numerous group community clean ups undertaken.

“My personal favourite parts of the project are having the opportunities to reach out to the schools and children’s clubs and groups in the village. I put together various sessions with the focus on the environment, taking groups out for litter picks followed by fun and educational activities.”

Regular litter picks are always on the cards and everyone is welcome to join in.
