Dear West Parents, It is with a slightly heavy heart that I write this; as I sit in my office in a house without girls, it is slowly dawning on me that I will not be the one welcoming them back in September. As excited as I am about my new role, I am only too aware that much of the fun element of my job (which let’s face it, comes from being around pupils), will be gone, and that is a really strange feeling. As I said at my leaving party (and I won’t forget that in a hurry), West really is a community and as hard as I have had to work at mes, in order to help your daughters nego ate teenage life, I, and my family, have gained so, so much in return. I guess that is what a community should be, and I know that this is what it will con nue to be. I would therefore like to thank you all, for all your help and support with this crazy community, ‐ you really have been so encouraging. As sad as I know the girls are to lose their beloved Miss Webb as well as Miss Greenwood, Miss Leach, and Mr Saxel to South, I know they wish them well! I would also like to wish Mrs Worsley, Mrs Bukow‐ ska, Miss Parry and Miss Wiles all the best in running West next year. I know they will be fantas c and as relieved as I am that I will no longer be doing early morning wake‐ups, I am in equal parts very envious. As for the girls, I have told them over and over again that I shall miss them so much though at least I s ll get to see them from my office
window! To my amazing UVIth leavers, I need to say well done on being such a fantas cally posi ve group. I could not have asked for more in my last year and to the new prefects, good luck and I know you will be fantas c. Have an amazing summer! Andrea, Richard, Ava and Isla x

House Cross Country House cross county is a event which tries to involve as many keen runners as possible, but like always it brings the dreaded build up. This year there were happy volunteers form the LVI, made up of Emily Thorpe, Ella Gosper, Gracie Escolme, Zoe Dixon, Millie Delaney and So‐ phie Thornton‐Wood. The UVI team made up of Felicity Bull,Sophie Miller, Chantelle Phillips and, for her first ever XC debut, Charlotte Cal‐ nan. The start of the course is always the most dreaded part, but West went off all ready to tackle the golf course hill and gave it their all. After a suggestion at the start to limit the amount of sprinting and to maintain a slower pace, I couldn't quite hold myself to this and headed off to a early advantage. After the hill is over everyone truly gave it there all and ran as fast as there legs could take them down the hill to the flat play‐ ing fields. At this point in the race with the combination of thick mud and and the sight of what seems to be the largest playing fields they could have chosen fatigue sets in, but in usual West fashion with the support of the other girls around the course everyone battled on. Sadly there was a combination of keen and fast South runners dominating the front of the pack when finishing, taking many of the precious posi‐ tions, but West tried their hardest in every way. The end result was very close, but despite Felicity taking first place and other Westies not far behind we lost narrowly on points difference. ~ Felicity Bull
Senior House Badminton It was a Tuesday afternoon, the west girls all rounded up to see what their opposition would be like. At a glance it seemed it would be an even match, but it turned out not to be the case. Fran Goudie and Oliver Charman as one pair, Megan Batchelor and Tessa Lensel‐ ink as another, and Gracie Escolme and Emily Thorpe as the third pair. The first round came and went and the west girls smashed it and none of the pairs lost a match, the second and third rounds went the same. It was fair to say it was a bit of a whitewash! Every pair put in a lot of effort and there was some magnificent play. This resulted in a fantastic victory for west! Well done everyone let’s hope to do the same next year. ~ Emily Thorpe

House Swimming West had great success in house swimming this year, coming out with the overall win. There were incredible efforts from all the girls, especial‐ ly those who don't usually swim showing great house spirit! U14's won by a solid 18 points and the U18's by 8 points. Although the U16's were not as lucky they didn't let it phase them and gave it everything they had. The junior girls had a spectacular day and achieved some new school records; Lulu Fulton (25m butterfly) and Fabi Kohler, Maya Magee, Lulu Fulton and Ella Morgan (4x25m Medley Relay). It was yet again another great house event with so much house pride and spir‐ it from both the girls houses. ~ Millie Delaney

Senior House Tennis Senior House Tennis was a great effort by West even though we sadly lost to south. Everyone played their hearts out and we did pretty well giving the fact that South almost had the whole tennis team on their side. Charlotte Calnan and Jess Pilling had a great victory against South's 1st pair, and Charlie Rick‐ wood and Ellen Dixon put up an strong fight against their second pair. Other tennis players included Zoe Dixon and Maria Carr. Additionally West showed great team spirit when Helly Crosthwaite, Bee Hardcastle, Sophie Heaver and Ab‐ by Frett all had to step in at the last minute due to some confusion. ~ Jessie Pilling
UV House Rounders Unfortunately we didn't do to well in the UV house rounders however hard we fought against South, I think it's fair to say that it's highly unlikely that we will de‐ feat south anytime soon... But we try. We were closer to winning the bs however we didn't quite make it and the a's was just a way off from winning. However we always win on the support side of things and spirit!! UV A results: South won 18‐7 and UV B results: South won 23.5 ‐ 11.5 ~ Charlie Hills

UVI House Rounders The UVI competed in their last house event before study leave, the much anticipated house rounders. It was a close event with the A team drawing with south whilst the B team won by half a rounder meaning that West won overall! There was some great play from all of the UVI and a great event to watch! ~ Poppy Couling
LVI House Rounders The lower sixth house rounders was won by west this year. However, we were unlucky not to win the toss up leading us to bat first. We had some massive hits from all the girls, with So‐ phie Thornton‐Wood running for a couple of girls and storming around all the posts getting rounder after rounder. In the fielding, West stayed alert and we managed to stop the South girls from running around the posts and getting any rounders. In the A’s West won 15.5 – 10. The B’s lost 7.5‐12. Overall, West won by 1 rounder! ~ Sophie O’Neill

House Golf Megan Batchelor, Pip Johnston, Tess Lenselink, Molly Herbert, Lily Mitchell, Millie Delaney and Freya Johnson faced south in house golf. As we all started it looked very close in ability and standard. However, West were lucky enough to win the first round with West scor‐ ing 91 points compared to South scoring 49 points. Having won the first round we were quite confident going into the second round .However, unfortunately due to the rain the second round was cancelled. Fortu‐ nately, due to our great start we won! ~ Freya Johnson
House Bouldering On the first day of the summer term, Amelia Holden, Lydia Murphy, Ellen and Zoë Dixon headed down to the outdoor education centre. It was on this day that the West Dream team would take on South house in the ultimate climbing battle – Girls’ House Bouldering. During the warm up, the girls were motivated by team leader Ellen Dixon, and tactics were discussed. It was decided that West, as in the usual spirit of the house, would not go down without a fight. The competition started, and West house immediately took the lead as all four climbers took to the wall with considerable determination and enthusiasm. Chalk was flying as west again and again danced up the problems, fin‐ ishing them with finesse and apparent ease. The support group who had come down to watch cheered as it was at last announced that West had won the bouldering competition, with over 50 points between them and South. After the obligatory team selfie, Lydia, Ellen, Amelia and Zoë headed back up to house, tired and happy with the great event that had just occurred. ‘Bring on next year’ could be heard as the girls finally re‐entered the house, heroes, even just for a few hours. ~ Zoë Dixon

Girls House Cricket
Team West stepped onto the field with high hopes of beating South in yet anoth‐ er house event, with a team made up of girls from every year. South chose to bat first, meaning that we would be the team chasing. West fielding was tight from the start and South immediately started to feel the pressure. West bowling was also accurate and successful, and we ended up taking 4 wickets: One from Beth Porter, two from Pip Johnston and one from Kitty Clements, as well as one run‐ out. South finished with 72 runs off of 12 overs which would be the total to chase. When West stepped out to bat, we showed confidence when coming up against some quick bowlers. Everyone batted consistently, but praise must be given to Freya Hough for a very successful final two overs, scoring 2 fours that travelled far over the boundary. We ended with a total of 68 runs, just 4 behind South. Alt‐ hough it didn’t end in victory, West brought great house spirit and it was a great experience for the younger players in both teams. ~ Pip Johnston

UVI Loveday Social UVI said goodbye to the Loveday UVI on Saturday with a breakfast of Bacon but‐ ties in Morning break. The breakfast was held in the recently decorated common room from Miss Webbs leaving party. Bacon Butties were being warmed on the barbeque for the UVI coming in from lessons. It was an enjoyable event for the UVI in their last few days before study leave. ~ Sophie House
UVI North Social UVI have said goodbye to North on Monday afternoonwas spent barbecuing in the rain for North boys. Thanks to everybody who helped out cooking and trying to turn on a very stub‐ born barbecue! ~ Sophie Howard and Maddie Jarvis

LVI End of Exams Social After an extremely busy couple of weeks packed with AS exams, the LVIth really needed a time to relax for once and thanks to the matrons and Mrs Worsley we had a PIMMS social!!! All the girls went outside into the sunny West garden and had our famous Cranleigh chicken goujons with sweet chilli sauce and fruity pimms. Afterwards, we played a variety of games including duck duck goose and 24 in ( were not childish at all!!) ~ Tabitha Bowden

LVI West/North Netball vs. Common Room Monday after prep saw the north girls and boys join together to take on the com‐ mon room netball team. The team consisted of: Beth, Pip, Sophie O, Ella, Eloise, Emma, Tabs, Charlie R, Charlie H, Nick Phil, Calum, Sam, Marcus and Mike. Despite never having played together, and in the case of the boys nev‐ er having touched a netball before, the team put up a strong fight. Unfortunately, the common room had been taking the sport far more seriously and had been practising in secret every night prior to the event, and as a result narrowly won the match 17 ‐14. Mr Pritchard and Mr Goddin defied gender stereotypes as they swept the court clean with their catching skills, led by Miss Merry the netball queen. The only disappointment was that Mr Sherrington‐Scales was a no show, and therefore could not live up to his reputation as star athlete. Everyone turned out to watch, and there was great house spirit, with cheers and occasional laugh‐ ter at the valiant efforts of all involved. We look forwards to our rematch next year, where the north boys and girls will win their pride back! ~ Eloise Hood

Music Trip to Abu Dhabi Over the Easter holidays four west girls went to Cranleigh Abu Dhabi on a music trip as the first members of Cranleigh UK to visit on an exchange. It was amazing to travel half the world yet end up in Cran‐ leigh!! Despite the fact that the school was completely different to here the ethos and attitude of the children was so similar to Cranleigh which was great to see. We spent the week staying with host families of pupils at the school who we got to know really well and form friendships with, the week culminated in a joint performance of the musical “Oliver”. It was an eye opening experience in which we learnt not only about the culture of the UAE but also what life is like for the pupils in Cranleigh Abu Dhabi. Something which I hope everyone gets the chance to experience in the fu‐ ture. ~ Sophie Howard

Brave New World The play “Brave New World”, featuring 13 West girls, was a huge success. The cast spent 6 months rehearsing and performed it for 3 nights in front of friends and family. The play is about the futuristic life of genetically manufactured babies. There is no such thing as love, family and long‐lasting relationships. The science hierarchy and complicated story line was brilliantly conveyed by 40 members of the cast. Junior plays are normally light hearted comedies. This time round we showed that dark and different plays can also be pursued well. ~ Ruby Dick‐ son
Treasure Island Treasure island was an upbeat panto full of charisma and cheesy jokes. it was adapted from the famous novel with a unique and humourous twist to the play that allowed the play to be a tremendous success. It was brilliantly acted by over 6 west girls with Elsa Hardcastle and Autumn Brown stealing the show with central parts of Miss Liversey an anxious scientist and Mrs Trelawny a bold and daring explorer. The play was especially enjoyable due to the delightful cast, with the two years thoroughly intertwined forming new friendships for many years in west to come. ~ Toni Taor

Miss Webb’s Leaving Do Miss Webb's leaving do was a huge success. It included, two shocking surprises, pizza, speeches, a leaving video and a rap! To start off, ten of her twelve tutees went to Pizza Express to surprise her as as she thought she was going out for a pizza with Mrs Worsley. She then walked us back to West where we surprised her again by being welcomed by 100 screaming girls! After the shock, her junior tu‐ tees delivered a speech, followed by a very amusing 6th form speech. There was then a rap including the verse, "We love it when you stroll into callover so happily, 'Alrighty then folks, Can we listen up please?!'" Finally, there was a video of some girls in West wishing her good luck for the future. It was a great night and it goes without saying West will not be the same
without Miss Webb! ~ Ruby Dickson

Doc Saxel’s Leaving Do Doc Sax’s leaving do took the form of an 80’s party which gave her the opportunity to wear her hot pink roller skates. It was a fantastic evening where the girls had an opportunity to perform their tributes. The highlight was obviously the UV’s rendition of ‘Skyfall/Doc Saxel’. As usual their musicality was second to none. There are not many housemistresses who would be the headline in a Mark Austin news bulletin and the performances were rounded off spectacularly with this. Doc Sax will be so greatly missed by the girls, parents, tutors, matrons, cleaners, and house staff. She has treated the girls as if they were her own and no problem or issue has been too small for her to take seriously. She has spent hours and hours and hours lis‐ tening and supporting every girl in her charge. A more committed housemistress could not be found. I have some mighty big shoes to fill but having learnt from the best I know I can start this new job from a po‐ sition of strength. We will miss you Doc Sax and promise we will never be late to chapel next year! AWW
